Lesson 17: Passive Voice, Reported Speech & Formal Writing — কর্মবাচ্য, পরোক্ষ উক্তি এবং আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখা
🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.
Three advanced skills share this lesson, because real life bundles them: saying that something *was done* (the passive), reporting what others *said* (reported speech), and writing the formal letter that gets a signature. Together they move you from conversation into administration — the Bangla of offices, newspapers and notice boards.
The passive voice (কর্মবাচ্য)
Active: রাম চিঠিটা লিখেছে। (Ram chiṭhiṭa likhechhe. — Ram has written the letter.) Passive: চিঠিটা লেখা হয়েছে। (Chiṭhiṭa lekha hoyechhe. — The letter has been written.)
Common passive patterns you will meet daily:
- এখানে বাংলা বলা হয়। (Ekhane baṅla bôla hôy. — Bangla is spoken here.)
- বইটি গত বছর প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। (Boiṭi gôtô bôchhôr prôkaśitô hoyechhe. — The book was published last year.)
- চোরটা ধরা পড়েছে। (Chorṭa dhôra pôṛechhe. — The thief has been caught [lit. has fallen into being caught].)
- দরজাটা বন্ধ করা হয়েছে। (Dôrjaṭa bôndho kôra hoyechhe. — The door has been closed.)
- সভায় সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। (Sôbhay siddhantô neoa hoyechhe. — A decision has been taken in the meeting.)
For reported events with an agent, newspapers write: পুলিশের দ্বারা অভিযুক্ত ধরা পড়েছে (puliśer dara ôbhijuktô dhôra pôṛechhe, the accused has been caught by the police) — with the genitive before দ্বারা. In everyday speech, prefer the simple patterns above.
Reported speech (পরোক্ষ উক্তি)
Direct: সে বলল, "আমি কাল আসবো।" (Se bôllô, "Ami kal asbo." — He said, "I will come tomorrow.") Reported: সে বলল যে সে পরের দিন আসবে। (Se bôllô je se pôrer din asbe. — He said that he would come the next day.)
Watch the three shifts, every time:
| Direct | Reported | Change |
|---|---|---|
| আমি (ami, I) | সে (se, he) | person shifts to the reporter |
| কাল (kal, tomorrow) | পরের দিন (pôrer din, the next day) | time words move back |
| আসবো (asbo, will come) | আসবে (asbe, would come) | verb steps back a tense |
Questions report with কিনা (kina, whether): সে জিজ্ঞেস করল, আমি যাবো কিনা। (Se jiggeś kôrlô, ami jabo kina. — He asked whether I would go.) Commands report with the -তে form: মা আমাকে তাড়াতাড়ি ফিরতে বললেন। (Ma amake taṛataṛi phirte bollen. — Mother told me to return quickly.)
Formal writing (আনুষ্ঠানিক লেখা): the application
The leave application (আবেদনপত্র, abedônpôtrô) is the classic formal letter. Its blocks never change:
- প্রাপক (prapôk, To): the officer, with office: প্রধান শিক্ষক, ... স্কুল, ঢাকা।
- বিষয় (biṣôy, Subject): ছুটির জন্য আবেদন। (Application for leave.)
- মহোদয় / জনাব (môhodôy / jônab, Respected Sir/Madam): the salutation.
- বিনীত নিবেদন এই যে... (Binītô nibedôn ei je... — The humble submission is that...) opens the body.
- অতএব (ôtôeb, therefore) introduces the request: অতএব, আমার দুই দিনের ছুটি মঞ্জুর করতে অনুরোধ করছি। (Therefore, I request you to grant me two days' leave.)
- আপনার বিশ্বস্ত (apnar biśbôsto, Yours faithfully) closes, with name, class and roll.
Keep formal letters in cholito — modern offices do not use sadhu — with respectful verb forms (করবেন, দেবেন) for the officer and humble forms for yourself.
Pronunciation notes: this lesson's sounds
- কর্তৃক (kortṛik, by — the most official agent word) contains ঋ after ত: say *kor-trik*, two beats. You will read it in government notices far more than you will say it.
- নিবেদন (nibedôn, submission) is n-i-be-dôn, stress falling late; the phrase বিনীত নিবেদন should sound bowing, slow and clear.
- জিজ্ঞেস (jiggeś, to ask) doubles the গ: *jig-geś*. One g sounds foreign.
- প্রকাশিত (prôkaśitô, published) — প্র conjunct plus শ: prô-ka-śi-tô.
Dialogue: reporting a conversation
- মা: শিক্ষক কী বললেন? (Śikkhôk ki bollen? — What did the teacher say?)
- রানা: তিনি বললেন যে, কাল পরীক্ষা হবে। (Tini bollen je, kal porīkṣa hôbe. — He said that the examination would be tomorrow.)
- মা: তিনি কি তোমাকে কিছু জিজ্ঞেস করলেন? (Tini ki tomake kichhu jiggeś korlen? — Did he ask you anything?)
- রানা: হ্যাঁ, তিনি জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, আমি প্রস্তুত কিনা। (Hyã, tini jiggeś korlen, ami prôstut kina. — Yes, he asked whether I was ready.)
- মা: তুমি কী বললে? (Tumi ki bôlle? — What did you say?)
- রানা: আমি বললাম, আমি তৈরি। (Ami bollam, ami toiri. — I said, I am ready.)
Comprehension questions
- 1. What did the teacher say?
- 2. What did the teacher ask Rana?
- 3. What was Rana's answer?
Answer key: 1. That the examination would be tomorrow (কাল পরীক্ষা হবে, kal porīkṣa hôbe). 2. Whether he was ready (আমি প্রস্তুত কিনা, ami prôstut kina). 3. That he was ready (আমি তৈরি, ami toiri).
Common mistakes
- বাংলা দ্বারা-passive everywhere. ✗ আমার দ্বারা কাজটা করা হয়েছে in casual speech sounds like a police report. ✓ আমি কাজটা করেছি। (Ami kajṭa korechhi. — I have done the work.) Use the passive for events, not for your own actions.
- Unshifted reported speech. ✗ সে বলল যে আমি কাল আসবো। — This claims *I* will come. ✓ সে বলল যে সে পরের দিন আসবে। — person, time word and verb all shift.
- কাল left as "tomorrow" in reports. ✗ Reporting today what he said yesterday: সে বলল যে সে কাল আসবে। now points at the wrong day. ✓ পরের দিন (pôrer din, the next day) or আগামীকাল recalculated from today.
- তুমি-forms in a formal application. ✗ Writing তুমি আমার ছুটি দাও to the headteacher. ✓ Formal requests use আপনি-imperatives softened further: অনুগ্রহ করে ছুটি মঞ্জুর করবেন (onugrôho kore chhuṭi mônjur korben, kindly grant the leave).
Exam Experience
Reading comprehension. Read the notice and answer the questions.
বিজ্ঞপ্তি: আগামী সোমবার স্কুল বন্ধ থাকবে। স্কুলের নতুন ভবনের উদ্বোধন করা হবে। অনুষ্ঠানে জেলার কর্মকর্তা উপস্থিত থাকবেন। সকল ছাত্রছাত্রীকে সকাল নয়টায় আসতে বলা হয়েছে। (Biggopti: Agamī sombar skul bôndho thakbe. Skuler nôtun bhôbôner udbodhôn kôra hôbe. Ônuṣṭhane jelar kôrmôkorta upôsthit thakben. Sôkôl chhatrochhatrīke sôkal nôyṭay aste bôla hoyechhe. — Notice: The school will remain closed next Monday. The school's new building will be inaugurated. The district officer will be present at the ceremony. All students have been asked to come at nine in the morning.)
- 1. Why will the school be closed on Monday?
- 2. Who will be present at the ceremony?
- 3. What have the students been asked to do?
Key: 1. For the inauguration of the new building (নতুন ভবনের উদ্বোধন করা হবে, nôtun bhôbôner udbodhôn kôra hôbe — a passive). 2. The district officer (জেলার কর্মকর্তা, jelar kôrmôkorta). 3. To come at nine in the morning (সকাল নয়টায় আসতে বলা হয়েছে, sôkal nôyṭay aste bôla hoyechhe — another passive).
Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.
- 1. Which is the correct reported form of: সে বলল, "আমি কাল আসবো"? a) সে বলল যে আমি কাল আসবো। b) সে বলল যে সে পরের দিন আসবে। c) সে বললে কাল আসবো। — Answer: b) All three shifts are made: person (সে), time (পরের দিন), verb (আসবে).
- 2. Which sentence is a natural Bangla passive? a) আমার দ্বারা বইটা পড়া হয়েছে। b) বইটা পড়া হয়েছে। c) বইটা আমি দ্বারা পড়লাম। — Answer: b) বইটা পড়া হয়েছে। The verbal-noun passive needs no দ্বারা in ordinary prose.
- 3. In a formal application, which line is the subject? a) মহোদয় b) বিষয়: ছুটির আবেদন c) আপনার বিশ্বস্ত — Answer: b) বিষয়: ছুটির আবেদন. মহোদয় is the salutation; আপনার বিশ্বস্ত closes the letter.
Guided writing. Write a formal application to your headteacher asking for two days' leave for a family event. Model answer: প্রাপক: প্রধান শিক্ষক, মডেল স্কুল, ঢাকা। (Prapôk: Prôdhan śikkhôk, Môḍel Skul, Ḍhaka. — To: The Head Teacher, Model School, Dhaka.) বিষয়: দুই দিনের ছুটির জন্য আবেদন। (Biṣôy: Dui diner chhuṭir jonyo abedôn. — Subject: Application for two days' leave.) মহোদয়, (Môhodôy, — Respected Sir,) বিনীত নিবেদন এই যে, আমার বোনের বিবাহ উপলক্ষে আমাকে গ্রামে যেতে হবে। (Binītô nibedôn ei je, amar boner bibahô upôlôkkhe amake grame jete hôbe. — The humble submission is that, on the occasion of my sister's wedding, I have to go to the village.) অতএব, আগামী সোমবার ও মঙ্গলবার আমার ছুটি মঞ্জুর করতে অনুরোধ করছি। (Ôtôeb, agamī sombar o môṅgôlbar amar chhuṭi mônjur kôrte onurodh korchhi. — Therefore, I request you to grant me leave for next Monday and Tuesday.) আপনার বিশ্বস্ত, সুমন রায়, শ্রেণি: দশম, রোল: ৫। (Apnar biśbôsto, Sumôn Ray, śreni: dôśôm, rol: 5. — Yours faithfully, Suman Ray, Class: Ten, Roll: 5.) Marking notes: one mark for the full block structure (প্রাপক, বিষয়, salutation, body, close); one for the formal opener বিনীত নিবেদন; one for respectful verb forms (করবেন understood in মঞ্জুর করতে অনুরোধ করছি). Any তুমি-form or chatty sentence (আমি যেতে চাই, প্লিজ) loses a mark.
Going deeper: reading headlines like a native
Newspaper Bangla compresses the passive and the report into single lines. Practise on these three typical headlines:
- নতুন সেতু উদ্বোধন করা হয়েছে। (Nôtun setu udbodhôn kôra hoyechhe. — A new bridge has been inaugurated.)
- মন্ত্রী বলেছেন, প্রকল্প শেষ হবে ডিসেম্বরে। (Môntrī bôlechhen, prôkôlpô śeṣ hôbe Ḍisembôre. — The minister has said the project will end in December [reported speech keeping কাল-style time words because the deadline is absolute].)
- তিনজন গ্রেফতার। (Tinjôn greph̥tar. — Three arrested [no verb at all — headline style drops even হয়েছে].)
Rules you can extract: headlines favour the হয়েছে passive, use বলেছেন with a comma for reported claims, and may drop the verb entirely for arrests, deaths and results (বাংলাদেশ জয়ী, Baṅladeś jôyī — Bangladesh victorious).
Reported questions drill. Convert as you read: direct — শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "তুমি তৈরি?" (Śikkhôk jiggeś korlen, "Tumi toiri?" — The teacher asked, "Are you ready?") Reported: শিক্ষক জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, আমি তৈরি কিনা। (Śikkhôk jiggeś korlen, ami toiri kina. — The teacher asked whether I was ready.) The question word কি disappears; কিনা takes its place at the end of the clause. Commands: direct — "বসো।" (Bôso. — Sit.) Reported: তিনি আমাকে বসতে বললেন। (Tini amake bôste bollen. — He told me to sit.) The -তে infinitive carries every reported command.
