Lesson 4: Basic Grammar — Plurals & Present Tense of হওয়া

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Two facts of Bangla grammar unlock hundreds of sentences, and this lesson teaches both: how to make plurals, and how the present tense works — including the famous surprise that Bangla has no verb "to be" in the present tense.

Key idea. আমি ছাত্র (ami chhatro) means "I am a student" — with no verb at all. Bangla simply places the person and the description side by side. The verb হওয়া (hôoẏa, to be, to become) exists, but its present forms mean *become* or *happen*, not "am/is/are".

Plurals: -রা for people, -গুলো for things

RuleSingularPronunciationPluralPronunciationMeaning of plural
People add -রাছেলেchheleছেলেরাchhelerathe boys
People add -রাশিক্ষকśikkhôkশিক্ষকেরাśikkhôkerathe teachers
People add -রামানুষmanushমানুষেরাmanusherathe people
Things add -গুলোবইboiবইগুলোboigulothe books
Things add -গুলোকলমkôlômকলমগুলোkôlômgulothe pens
People add -দের (possessive)তারাtaraতাদেরtadertheir, theirs
People add -দের (possessive)ছেলেchheleছেলেদেরchhelederof the boys

Three habits to fix now. First, the plural marker comes only when the plural is definite or already known — "books" in general is often just বই (boi). Second, never add a plural marker after a number or classifier: তিনটা বই (tinṭa boi, three books), never *তিনটা বইগুলো*. Third, -গুলো has a slightly more formal sister, -গুলি (guli), which you will meet in books; everyday speech uses -গুলো.

The present tense of হওয়া

PersonFormPronunciationExampleMeaning
আমি (I)হইhoiআমি বড় হই।I am growing up [lit. becoming big].
তুমি (you, familiar)হওhôoতুমি খুশি হও।You become happy.
সে (he/she)হয়hôyসে শিক্ষক হয়।He becomes a teacher.
আপনি / তিনি (you/he, respectful)হনhônতিনি ডাক্তার হন।He (respectful) is a doctor by profession.
আমরা (we)হইhoiআমরা তৈরি হই।We get ready.
তারা (they)হয়hôyতারা বন্ধু হয়।They become friends.

Read the examples again and notice how every one describes *becoming* or *being by nature/profession*, not a temporary "is". For plain identification, use the zero-verb pattern: সে শিক্ষক। (Se śikkhôk. — He is a teacher.) এটা বই। (Eṭa boi. — This is a book.) তারা ছাত্র। (Tara chhatro. — They are students.)

হওয়া also means "to happen": কী হয়? (Ki hôy? — What happens? / What is the matter?) and ভুল হয় (bhul hôy, a mistake happens): আমার ভুল হয়। (Amar bhul hôy. — I make mistakes, literally "my mistakes happen".)

The simple present of ordinary verbs

Most verbs follow the pattern you see here with করা (kôra, to do) and যাওয়া (jaoa, to go). The endings are -ই, -ও, -ে/-য়, -েন by person:

Personকরা (to do)যাওয়া (to go)খাওয়া (to eat)
আমিকরি (kori)যাই (jai)খাই (khai)
তুমিকরো (koro)যাও (jao)খাও (khao)
সেকরে (kore)যায় (jay)খায় (khay)
আপনি / তিনিকরেন (koren)যান (jan)খান (khan)
  • আমি প্রতিদিন বাংলা পড়ি। (Ami prôtidin baṅla pôṛi. — I study Bangla every day.)
  • সে স্কুলে যায়। (Se skule jay. — She goes to school.)
  • আপনি কোথায় থাকেন? (Apni kothay thaken? — Where do you live? [respectful])
  • আমরা চা খাই। (Amra cha khai. — We drink [literally eat] tea.)

Pronunciation notes: this lesson's sounds

  • গুলো is quick and light. Say বইগুলো (boigulo) as *boi-gu-lo*, three easy beats, with no stress on গু. Learners often drag it out; native speakers nearly swallow it.
  • য় in হওয়া. The word হওয়া (hôoẏa) uses য় as a glide: *hô-wa*. Read it as two smooth syllables, not "ha-o-ya".
  • -রা sits inside the word. শিক্ষকেরা (śikkhôkera, the teachers) — the plural ending merges so the word flows *śik-khô-ke-ra*.
  • হন against হয়. The respectful হন (hôn) ends in a clear n; do not let it slide into হয় (hôy). The difference is politeness itself.

Dialogue: introductions in the classroom

  • শিক্ষক: এরা কারা? (Era kara? — Who are these people?)
  • রিয়া: এরা আমার বন্ধুরা। এরা নতুন ছাত্র। (Era amar bôndhura. Era nôtun chhatro. — These are my friends. They are new students.)
  • শিক্ষক: ওই বইগুলো কাদের? (Oi boigulo kader? — Whose are those books?)
  • রিয়া: বইগুলো ছাত্রদের। (Boigulo chhatroder. — The books belong to the students.)
  • শিক্ষক: খুব ভালো। তোমরা বসো। (Khub bhalo. Tomra bôso. — Very good. You all sit down.)

Comprehension questions

  • 1. Who are the people Riya introduces?
  • 2. Whose are the books?
  • 3. What does the teacher ask them to do at the end?

Answer key: 1. Her friends (বন্ধুরা, bôndhura), who are new students. 2. The students' (ছাত্রদের, chhatroder). 3. To sit down (বসো, bôso).

Common mistakes

  • Adding হই/হয় as a copula everywhere. ✗ আমি ছাত্র হই। — This says "I *become* a student". ✓ For "I am a student", say আমি ছাত্র। with no verb. Save হয় for changes, habits and professions.
  • Plural after a number. ✗ তিনটা বইগুলো ✓ তিনটা বই (tinṭa boi). Once a classifier counts the noun, the plural ending is not used.
  • -রা on things, -গুলো on people. ✗ বইরা ✗ শিক্ষকগুলো ✓ বইগুলো (boigulo, the books); শিক্ষকেরা (śikkhôkera, the teachers).
  • Forgetting the respectful ending. ✗ Talking about the teacher: সে করেন না, সে করে। mixes levels. ✓ About a respected person use তিনি করেন (tini koren, he/she does).
Try it. Write six sentences about your classroom or office: two with the zero-verb pattern (এটা..., সে...), two with plurals in -রা or -গুলো, and two in the simple present of করা or যাওয়া. Read them aloud and check that no sentence keeps an English-style "is" that Bangla does not need.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer the questions.

আমাদের ক্লাসে ত্রিশজন ছাত্রছাত্রী আছে। আমাদের শিক্ষকের নাম করিম স্যার। তিনি খুব ভালো পড়ান। ক্লাসের বইগুলো নতুন। ছাত্ররা প্রতিদিন সকালে স্কুলে আসে। তারা খেলতেও ভালোবাসে। (Amader klase triśjôn chhatrochhatrī achhe. Amader śikkhôker nam Kôrim Syar. Tini khub bhalo pôṛan. Klaser boigulo nôtun. Chhatrora prôtidin sôkale skule aśe. Tara khelteo bhalobaśe. — There are thirty students in our class. Our teacher's name is Karim Sir. He teaches very well. The class's books are new. The students come to school every morning. They also love to play.)

  • 1. How many students are in the class?
  • 2. What is the teacher's name, and how does he teach?
  • 3. What two things do the students do?

Key: 1. Thirty (ত্রিশজন, triśjôn — note the people-classifier জন). 2. Karim Sir (করিম স্যার); he teaches very well (খুব ভালো পড়ান, khub bhalo pôṛan, using the respectful form পড়ান). 3. They come to school every morning and they love to play (খেলতে ভালোবাসে, khelte bhalobaśe).

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

  • 1. Which is the plural of বই (boi, book)? a) বইরা b) বইগুলো c) বইজন — Answer: b) বইগুলো. Things take -গুলো; -রা is for people and -জন is a classifier, not a plural.
  • 2. Which sentence means "They are teachers"? a) তারা শিক্ষক হয়। b) তারা শিক্ষক। c) তারা শিক্ষকেরা। — Answer: b) তারা শিক্ষক। The zero-verb pattern gives plain "are"; (a) says they *become* teachers.
  • 3. Which form of হওয়া goes with আপনি? a) হও b) হয় c) হন — Answer: c) হন (hôn), the respectful form, matching আপনি and তিনি.

Guided writing. Write four sentences about the people in your family: who they are, using one plural in -রা, one plural in -গুলো for family possessions, and one sentence in the simple present. Model answer: আমার পরিবারে পাঁচজন মানুষ। (Amar poribare pãchjôn manush. — There are five people in my family.) মা আর বাবা অফিসে কাজ করেন। (Ma ar baba ophise kaj kôren. — Mother and Father work in an office.) বোনেরা স্কুলে যায়। (Bonera skule jay. — My sisters go to school.) বাড়ির বইগুলো পুরনো। (Baṛir boigulo purono. — The books in the house are old.) Marking notes: one mark for the zero-verb pattern used at least once without an added হয়; one for each correct plural (-রা for people, -গুলো for things, none after a number); one for matching the verb ending to the person. Using হয় as a translation of "is" anywhere costs the pattern mark.

Going deeper: plural families and demonstratives

Three more plural patterns complete the picture of Lesson 4:

PatternExamplePronunciationMeaning
Places and times with -গুলোদিনগুলোdingulothe days
Formal -গুলি in printবইগুলিboigulithe books (literary)
Group word সমূহ (formal)ছাত্রসমূহchhatrôsômuhôthe body of students
This/these for thingsএইগুলো / সেগুলোeigulo / segulothese / those (things)
This/these for peopleএরা / ওরাera / orathese people / those people
Allসবাই / সবsôbai / sôbeveryone (people) / all (things)

সবাই (sôbai) means *everyone* and takes a singular-looking verb with plural meaning: সবাই এসেছে। (Sôbai eśechhe. — Everyone has come.) সব (sôb) covers things: সব বই এখানে। (Sôb boi ekhane. — All the books are here.)

The demonstratives form neat ladders — this lesson's এরা/ওরা for people beside এইগুলো/সেগুলো for things — and they decline exactly like the pronouns of Lesson 9: এদের (eder, of these people), ওদের (oder, of those people), এগুলোর (egulor, of these things).

Worked paragraph. Read and translate before checking: এরা আমার ছাত্ররা। ওরা ওদের বন্ধুরা। এইগুলো আমার বই, সেগুলো ওদের বই। সবাই এখন ক্লাসে আছে। (Era amar chhatrora. Ora oder bôndhura. Eigulo amar boi, segulo oder boi. Sôbai ekhôn klase achhe. — These are my students. Those are their friends. These are my books, those are their books. Everyone is in class now.)

One more হওয়া treasure: the question কেমন হয়? (Kemôn hôy? — How is it / how does it turn out?) and its answer pattern ভালো হয় (bhalo hôy, it turns out well) show হওয়া as the verb of outcomes: শেষে সব ভালো হয়। (Śeṣe sôb bhalo hôy. — In the end everything turns out well.)

Workshop: plural detective

Read this paragraph and hunt every plural — answers underneath:

ছাত্ররা স্কুলে এসেছে। তাদের বইগুলো নতুন। শিক্ষকেরা ক্লাসে আছেন। ছাত্রদের খাতাগুলো টেবিলে। মেয়েরা গান গাইছে। (Chhatrora skule eśechhe. Tader boigulo nôtun. Śikkhôkera klase achhen. Chhatroder khatagulo ṭebile. Meyera gan gaichhe. — The students have come to school. Their books are new. The teachers are in class. The students' notebooks are on the table. The girls are singing.)

The plurals: ছাত্ররা (people +রা), বইগুলো (things +গুলো), তাদের (their — the possessive plural), শিক্ষকেরা (people +রা), ছাত্রদের (possessive plural -দের), খাতাগুলো (things +গুলো), মেয়েরা (people +রা). Seven plurals in five sentences — ordinary Bangla is dense with them once your eye is trained.

Quantifier trio: কিছু (kichhu, some/a few): কিছু বই (some books); অনেক (ônek, many/much): অনেক ছাত্র (many students); কয়েক (kôyek, a few/several): কয়েকজন ছাত্র (a few students — people take জন again). None of the three ever triggers -গুলো or -রা: অনেক বই, never অনেক বইগুলো, unless the books are definite and already mentioned.
