Lesson 12: Travel & Directions — ভ্রমণ এবং রাস্তা

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Whether you are crossing Dhaka by rickshaw or finding a platform in Kolkata, travel Bangla is a survival kit: asking where things are, which way to go, how far, how long, and how much the fare is. This lesson gives you the vocabulary of roads and vehicles and the question patterns that unlock them.

Key idea. Direction words never travel alone — they attach to the genitive plus a place noun: স্টেশনের ডানদিকে (sṭeśôner ḍandike, to the right of the station), বাড়ির সামনে (baṛir samne, in front of the house). Learn -দিকে (dike, towards the side of) as your compass suffix.

The two Bengals travel differently, in miniature: Dhaka is the city of the রিকশা (rikśa) and the river লঞ্চ (lônch) to Barisal, while Kolkata keeps its ট্রাম (ṭram, tram) and the মেট্রো (metro). Both cities, one language of the road.

The five travel questions

  • স্টেশনটা কোথায়? (Sṭeśônṭa kothay? — Where is the station?)
  • আমি কীভাবে যাবো? (Ami kibhabe jabo? — How shall I go?)
  • কত দূর? (Kôtô dur? — How far?)
  • কতক্ষণ লাগবে? (Kôtôkkhôṇ lagbe? — How long will it take?)
  • ভাড়া কত? (Bhaṛa kôtô? — What is the fare?)

And the respectful commands you will hear in answers: সোজা যান (soja jan, go straight), ডানদিকে ঘুরুন (ḍandike ghurun, turn right), ওখানে নামুন (okhane namun, get down there), সেতুটা পার হোন (setuṭa par hôn, cross the bridge).

A model exchange, end to end: মাফ করবেন, স্টেশনটা কোন দিকে? (Maph korben, sṭeśônṭa kon dike? — Excuse me, which way is the station?) সোজা যান, তারপর বামদিকে ঘুরুন। স্টেশনটা সেতুর পাশে। (Soja jan, tarpor bamdike ghurun. Sṭeśônṭa setur paśe. — Go straight, then turn left. The station is beside the bridge.)

Pronunciation notes: this lesson's sounds

  • মোড় against রাস্তা. মোড় (moṛ, turning) carries the flapped ড়; রাস্তা (rasta) carries flat র. Keep মোর (mor, peacock — a different word again!) separate in your ear: three near-twins, three meanings.
  • দক্ষিণ (dôkkhiṇ, south) hides the ক্ষ conjunct: say *dôk-khiṇ*, not "dakkhin".
  • -দিকে endings. ডানদিকে (ḍandike) runs together as ḍan-di-ke, three quick beats. Practise the four compass phrases as blocks: ডানদিকে, বামদিকে, সোজাদিকে (rare — say সোজা যান for "straight ahead"), উল্টোদিকে (ulṭodike, in the opposite direction).
  • ঘুরুন has a soft ঘ. The ঘ (gh) in ঘুরুন (ghurun, please turn) is a breathed, voiced g — like a gargled *gh*, never a hard English g.

Dialogue: asking the way

  • যাত্রী: মাফ করবেন, লঞ্চঘাটটা কোথায়? (Maph korben, lônchghāṭṭa kothay? — Excuse me, where is the launch terminal?)
  • পথিক: সোজা যান। নদীর কাছে। (Soja jan. Nôdīr kachhe. — Go straight. Near the river.)
  • যাত্রী: হেঁটে কতক্ষণ লাগবে? (Hẽṭe kôtôkkhôṇ lagbe? — How long will it take on foot?)
  • পথিক: দশ মিনিট। রিকশা নিলে পাঁচ মিনিট। (Dôś miniṭ. Rikśa nile pãch miniṭ. — Ten minutes. Five minutes if you take a rickshaw.)
  • যাত্রী: ধন্যবাদ। রিকশাই নিই। (Dhônyobad. Rikśai nii. — Thank you. I will take a rickshaw then.)

Comprehension questions

  • 1. What is the traveller looking for?
  • 2. How long does it take on foot, and by rickshaw?
  • 3. Which does the traveller finally choose?

Answer key: 1. The launch terminal (লঞ্চঘাট, lônchghāṭ). 2. Ten minutes on foot (দশ মিনিট, dôś miniṭ); five by rickshaw (পাঁচ মিনিট, pãch miniṭ). 3. The rickshaw (রিকশাই নিই, rikśai nii — I will take the rickshaw itself).

Common mistakes

  • ডান and বাম swapped. ✗ Turning right when told বামদিকে (bamdike, to the left). ✓ Fix the pair with your own body: ডান হাত (ḍan hat, right hand) writes; বাম হাত (bam hat) is the other one. In moments of doubt, ask: ডান না বাম? (Ḍan na bam? — Right or left?)
  • কত for everything. ✗ কত লাগবে? alone is vague. ✓ Distance: কত দূর? Time: কতক্ষণ লাগবে? Fare: ভাড়া কত?
  • Genitive dropped before দিকে/পাশে. ✗ স্টেশন পাশে ✓ স্টেশনের পাশে (sṭeśôner paśe, beside the station).
  • যাবো for "I want to go". ✗ আমি যাবো চাই। ✓ আমি যেতে চাই। (Ami jete chai. — I want to go.) যাবো means "I will go", a promise, not a wish.
Try it. On a blank page, draw a simple map of your neighbourhood with five landmarks labelled in Bangla. Then write directions from the bottom of the page to one landmark, using সোজা, ডানদিকে, বামদিকে and পাশে. Read the directions aloud as if guiding a friend on the phone.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer the questions.

গতকাল আমরা ট্রেনে চাঁদপুর গেলাম। স্টেশন থেকে নদীর ঘাট কাছে। আমরা লঞ্চে নদী পার হলাম। ওপারে আমার বন্ধুর বাড়ি। বন্ধু আমাদের জন্য রিকশা নিয়ে এসেছিল। (Gôtôkal amra ṭrene Chãdpur gelam. Sṭeśôn theke nôdīr ghāṭ kachhe. Amra lônche nôdī par hôlam. Opare amar bôndhur baṛi. Bôndhu amader jonyo rikśa niye eśechhilo. — Yesterday we went to Chandpur by train. From the station the river terminal is near. We crossed the river by launch. On the other side is my friend's house. The friend had come with a rickshaw for us.)

  • 1. How did the family travel to Chandpur?
  • 2. What is near the station?
  • 3. How did they cross the river, and who was waiting on the other side?

Key: 1. By train (ট্রেনে, ṭrene). 2. The river terminal (নদীর ঘাট, nôdīr ghāṭ). 3. By launch (লঞ্চে, lônche); the friend, who had brought a rickshaw (রিকশা নিয়ে এসেছিল, rikśa niye eśechhilo).

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

  • 1. Which phrase means "to the right of the station"? a) স্টেশনের ডানদিকে b) স্টেশন ডান c) ডান স্টেশনের — Answer: a) স্টেশনের ডানদিকে. The direction word takes the genitive স্টেশনের plus -দিকে.
  • 2. What does ভাড়া (bhaṛa) mean? a) map b) fare c) bridge — Answer: b) fare. মানচিত্র (manchitrô) is a map and সেতু (setu) is a bridge.
  • 3. Which question asks "How long will it take?" a) কত দূর? b) ভাড়া কত? c) কতক্ষণ লাগবে? — Answer: c) কতক্ষণ লাগবে? (a) asks distance and (b) asks the price.

Guided writing. Write directions from your school or office to your home, in five sentences, for a friend who will follow them. Model answer: স্কুল থেকে বের হয়ে সোজা যাও। (Skul theke ber hoye soja jao. — Come out of the school and go straight.) প্রথম মোড়ে ডানদিকে ঘোরো। (Prôthôm moṛe ḍandike ghoro. — Turn right at the first junction.) সেতুটা পার হও। (Setuṭa par hôo. — Cross the bridge.) বাজারের পাশ দিয়ে যাও। (Bajarer paś diye jao. — Pass by the market.) ডানদিকের তৃতীয় বাড়িটাই আমার বাড়ি। (Ḍandiker tṛitiyô baṛiṭai amar baṛi. — The third house on the right is my house.) Marking notes: one mark for each direction word used correctly (সোজা, ডানদিকে, বামদিকে, মোড়ে); one for at least one genitive-plus-দিকে/পাশে phrase; one for commands kept at one consistent politeness level (যাও/ঘোরো for a friend, যান/ঘুরুন for a stranger). A left–right swap anywhere loses the direction mark.

Going deeper: buying a ticket at the station

Travel becomes real at the counter. Practise this exchange until it runs by itself:

  • যাত্রী: ঢাকার একটা টিকিট দিন। (Ḍhakar ekṭa ṭikiṭ din. — Please give me a ticket to Dhaka [respectful].)
  • কেরানি: কোন ট্রেনে যাবেন? সকালেরটা না বিকেলেরটা? (Kon ṭrene jaben? Sôkalerṭa na bikelerṭa? — By which train will you go? The morning one or the afternoon one?)
  • যাত্রী: সকালের ট্রেনে। ভাড়া কত? (Sôkaler ṭrene. Bhaṛa kôtô? — By the morning train. What is the fare?)
  • কেরানি: তিনশো টাকা। (Tinśo ṭaka. — Three hundred taka.)
  • যাত্রী: একটা আসন জানালার পাশে দিন। (Ekṭa asôn janalar paśe din. — Give me a seat beside the window.)
  • কেরানি: এই নিন। ট্রেন ছাড়বে নয়টায়। (Ei nin. Ṭren chhaṛbe nôyṭay. — Here you are. The train leaves at nine.)

Words to pocket: আসন (asôn, seat), ছাড়বে (chhaṛbe, will depart), পৌঁছাবে (põuchhabe, will arrive), আগাম টিকিট (agam ṭikiṭ, advance ticket), ফিরতি টিকিট (phirti ṭikiṭ, return ticket).

The pattern -এরটা chooses between known options: সকালেরটা (the morning one), বড়টা (the big one), লালটা (the red one). Pair it with না for the either–or question shape: চা না কফি? (Cha na kôphi? — Tea or coffee?) You will use this shape at every counter in Bengal.

Signs you can now read: স্টেশন (station), প্রবেশ (entrance), প্রস্থান (exit), প্ল্যাটফর্ম (platform), টিকিট কাউন্টার (ticket counter), অপেক্ষাগার (waiting room). Public signs are free reading practice — collect them.

Workshop: reading a departure board

Real travel Bangla is printed in tables. Read this departure board and answer the questions:

ট্রেনগন্তব্যছাড়বেপৌঁছাবে
সুবর্ণ এক্সপ্রেসচট্টগ্রামসকাল ৭টাদুপুর ১টা
পদ্মা এক্সপ্রেসরাজশাহীসকাল ৮টাদুপুর ২টা
সুন্দরবন এক্সপ্রেসখুলনারাত ১০টাসকাল ৬টা

(In words: Subarna Express to Chattogram, departs 7 am, arrives 1 pm. Padma Express to Rajshahi, departs 8 am, arrives 2 pm. Sundarban Express to Khulna, departs 10 pm, arrives 6 am.)

New words earned from the board: গন্তব্য (gôntôbyô, destination), ছাড়বে (chhaṛbe, will depart), পৌঁছাবে (põuchhabe, will arrive). Questions: কোন ট্রেন চট্টগ্রাম যাবে? (Which train goes to Chattogram?) রাজশাহীর ট্রেন কখন ছাড়বে? (When does the Rajshahi train leave?) কোন ট্রেন রাতে চলে? (Which train runs at night?) Key: সুবর্ণ এক্সপ্রেস; সকাল আটটায়; সুন্দরবন এক্সপ্রেস — the overnight train, whose passengers sleep through the dark delta and wake in Khulna.

Time phrases to seal the lesson: সাতটা বাজে (satṭa baje, it is seven o'clock), আধ ঘণ্টা (adh ghôṇṭa, half an hour), দেরি হয়েছে (deri hoyechhe, it is late / there has been a delay). With these and the board above, no station in Bengal can defeat you.

One last compass drill. Point and say: উত্তর (uttor, north) — দক্ষিণ (dôkkhiṇ, south) — পূর্ব (purbo, east) — পশ্চিম (pôśchim, west). Bengali children learn them with the sunrise: পূর্ব is where the sun rises, পশ্চিম where it sets. Learn them the same way, standing up, and the compass will live in your body, not only in your notebook.
