Lesson 10: Complex Sentences — কারণ, যদি, যখন…তখন, যে…সে
🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.
Simple sentences say one thing. Real Bangla — stories, explanations, arguments — links them: because, if, when, who. This lesson gives you the connectors and the clause patterns that turn রানা পড়ে। রানা পাস করে। into রানা পড়ে, তাই রানা পাস করে (Rana studies, so Rana passes) and far richer sentences.
The connector toolkit
| Connector | Pronunciation | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| কারণ | karôn | because | পড়ি, কারণ পরীক্ষা কাছে। | I study because the exam is near. |
| তাই | tai | so, therefore | বৃষ্টি হচ্ছে, তাই যাই না। | It is raining, so I am not going. |
| যদি | jodi | if | যদি আসো, খেলবো। | If you come, we will play. |
| কিন্তু | kintu | but | ছোট, কিন্তু শক্ত। | Small, but strong. |
| তবে | tôbe | however | দামি, তবে ভালো। | Expensive, however good. |
| যদিও ... তবুও | jodio ... tôbuo | although ... still | যদিও অসুস্থ, তবুও এল। | Although ill, he still came. |
| যাতে | jate | so that | আস্তে বলো, যাতে সবাই শোনে। | Speak slowly so that everyone hears. |
| না হলে / নইলে | na hôle / noile | otherwise, if not | তাড়াতাড়ি করো, না হলে দেরি হবে। | Hurry, otherwise you will be late. |
যখন…তখন and the relative pair যে…সে
Correlative pairs are the skeleton of Bangla complex sentences. One clause asks, the other answers:
- যখন আমি এলাম, তখন সে গেল। (Jôkhôn ami elam, tôkhôn se gelô. — When I came, then he left.)
- যে ছেলেটা গান গায়, সে আমার বন্ধু। (Je chheleṭa gan gay, se amar bôndhu. — The boy who sings is my friend [lit. Which boy sings, that one is my friend].)
- যেখানে নদী, সেখানে গ্রাম। (Jekhane nôdī, sekhane gram. — Where there is a river, there is a village.)
- যেমন বাবা, তেমন ছেলে। (Jemôn baba, temôn chhele. — Like father, like son.)
- যত পড়বে, তত শিখবে। (Jôtô pôṛbe, tôtô śikhbe. — The more you read, the more you will learn.)
The যে…সে pattern is the one English speakers must rewire: the relative clause comes first with যে, and the main clause repeats the noun with সে/সেই. যে বইটা তুমি দিলে, সে বইটা আমি পড়েছি। (Je boiṭa tumi dile, se boiṭa ami pôṛechhi. — The book that you gave, that book I have read.)
More clause machinery
- কারণ clause after the fact: সে এল না, কারণ সে অসুস্থ ছিল। (Se elô na, karôn se ôsustho chhilo. — He did not come, because he was ill.) কারণ can also precede: কারণ সে অসুস্থ ছিল, সে এল না।
- -তে for purpose: আমি খেতে এসেছি। (Ami khete eśechhi. — I have come to eat.) সে পড়তে বসেছে। (Se pôṛte bôśechhe. — She has sat down to study.)
- বলে for reported content (full treatment in Lesson 17): সে বলল যে সে কাল আসবে। (Se bôllô je se kal asbe. — He said that he would come tomorrow.)
- -লে conditional (looking ahead to Lesson 16): পড়লে পাস করবে। (Pôṛle pas korbe. — If you study, you will pass.)
- যদি clause keeps the present: যদি তুমি আসো, আমি খুশি হবো। (Jodi tumi aso, ami khuśi hôbo. — If you come, I will be happy.) Never put the future inside the যদি clause.
Worked build-ups
Sentence pair: বৃষ্টি হলো। খেলা বন্ধ হলো। (It rained. The game stopped.)
- With কারণ: কারণ বৃষ্টি হলো, খেলা বন্ধ হলো। (Because it rained, the game stopped.)
- With তাই: বৃষ্টি হলো, তাই খেলা বন্ধ হলো। (It rained, so the game stopped.)
- With যখন…তখন: যখন বৃষ্টি হলো, তখন খেলা বন্ধ হলো। (When it rained, the game stopped.)
- With যদিও…তবুও: যদিও বৃষ্টি হলো, তবুও আমরা মাঠে গেলাম। (Although it rained, we still went to the field.)
Pronunciation notes: this lesson's sounds
- যেহেতু is formal "since". যেহেতু (jehetu, since/because) belongs to writing and speeches: যেহেতু সময় কম, তাড়াতাড়ি করো। Say je-he-tu in three clean beats; spoken Bangla usually prefers কারণ.
- যদিও splits as jô-di-o. Three light syllables; do not swallow it into "jodyo".
- তাই is one falling word: *tai*, like English "tie". It starts a fresh clause, so pause slightly before it.
- যে as a link is unstressed. In সে বলল যে..., যে (je, that) is a whisper between clauses — never stress it as the pronoun "who".
Dialogue: telling a small story
- রিয়া: কাল স্কুলে গেলে না কেন? (Kal skule gele na kenô? — Why did you not go to school yesterday?)
- অমিত: কারণ আমার জ্বর ছিল। (Karôn amar jôr chhilo. — Because I had a fever.)
- রিয়া: যখন আমি ফোন করলাম, তখন তুমি ঘুমাছিলে। (Jôkhôn ami phon korlam, tôkhôn tumi ghumachchhile. — When I phoned, you were asleep.)
- অমিত: তাই শুনতে পাইনি। (Tai śunte paini. — So I did not hear it.)
- রিয়া: যদি আজ ভালো থাকো, কাল খেলতে এসো। (Jodi aj bhalo thako, kal khelte eso. — If you are well today, come and play tomorrow.)
Comprehension questions
- 1. Why did Amit miss school?
- 2. What was Amit doing when Riya phoned?
- 3. What invitation does Riya give, and on what condition?
Answer key: 1. He had a fever (আমার জ্বর ছিল, amar jôr chhilo). 2. He was asleep (ঘুমাছিলে, ghumachchhile). 3. To come and play tomorrow (খেলতে এসো), if he is well today (যদি আজ ভালো থাকো, jodi aj bhalo thako).
Common mistakes
- Splitting the correlative pair. ✗ যখন বৃষ্টি থামল, আমরা বের হলাম তখন। তখন belongs at the head of the main clause. ✓ যখন বৃষ্টি থামল, তখন আমরা বের হলাম।
- Future inside the যদি clause. ✗ যদি তুমি আসবে, আমি খুশি হবো। ✓ যদি তুমি আসো, আমি খুশি হবো। (Jodi tumi aso, ami khuśi hôbo.) The if-clause stays in the present; the result clause takes the future.
- English relative order. ✗ বইটা যে তুমি দিলে আমি পড়েছি tangles the sentence. ✓ যে বইটা তুমি দিলে, সে বইটা আমি পড়েছি। — যে-clause first, সে-clause after.
- কারণ dropped after a comma splice. ✗ সে এল না সে অসুস্থ ছিল runs two sentences together without a link. ✓ সে এল না, কারণ সে অসুস্থ ছিল।
Exam Experience
Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer the questions.
একদিন এক কৃষক মাঠে কাজ করছিল। যখন দুপুর হলো, তখন সে গাছের নিচে বসল। সে দেখল, একটা পাখি গাছে বাসা বানাচ্ছে। যেহেতু পাখিটা খুব ছোট ছিল, কৃষক অবাক হলো। সে ভাবল, ছোট হলেও পাখিটা কত পরিশ্রমী! (Ekdin ek kṛiṣôk maṭhe kaj korchhil. Jôkhôn dupur holo, tôkhôn se gachher niche bôslô. Se dekhlô, ekṭa pakhi gachhe basa banachchhe. Jehetu pakhiṭa khub chhoṭo chhilo, kṛiṣôk ôbak holo. Se bhablô, chhoṭo holeo pakhiṭa kôtô poriśromī! — One day a farmer was working in the field. When it became noon, he sat under a tree. He saw that a bird was building a nest in the tree. Since the bird was very small, the farmer was surprised. He thought, although it is small, how hardworking the bird is!)
- 1. Where was the farmer working, and where did he sit at noon?
- 2. What was the bird doing?
- 3. Why was the farmer surprised?
Key: 1. In the field (মাঠে, maṭhe); under a tree (গাছের নিচে, gachher niche). 2. Building a nest (বাসা বানাচ্ছে, basa banachchhe). 3. Because the bird was very small (যেহেতু পাখিটা খুব ছোট ছিল, jehetu pakhiṭa khub chhoṭo chhilo) yet so hardworking.
Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.
- 1. Which word correctly completes "যদি তুমি ___, আমি যাবো"? a) আসবে b) আসো c) এলাম — Answer: b) আসো. The যদি clause keeps the present tense; আসবে is future and এলাম is past.
- 2. Which pair is a correlative pair? a) কারণ ... তাই b) যখন ... তখন c) কিন্তু ... তবে — Answer: b) যখন ... তখন. The first word sets the scene and the second answers it in the main clause.
- 3. Which sentence means "He came to read"? a) সে পড়ে এল। b) সে পড়তে এল। c) সে পড়ল এল। — Answer: b) সে পড়তে এল। Purpose takes the -তে form: পড়তে (pôṛte, to read/for reading).
Guided writing. Join each pair into one complex sentence, then finish with a story sentence of your own. (a) দিনটা গরম ছিল। আমরা নদীতে গেলাম। (b) সে পড়ল। সে পাস করল। Model answer: (a) যেহেতু দিনটা গরম ছিল, আমরা নদীতে গেলাম। (Jehetu dinṭa gôrôm chhilo, amra nôdīte gelam. — Since the day was hot, we went to the river.) (b) সে মন দিয়ে পড়ল, তাই সে পাস করল। (Se môn diye pôṛlô, tai se pas kôrlô. — He studied attentively, so he passed.) Story sentence: যখন সন্ধ্যা হলো, তখন আমরা বাড়ি ফিরে এলাম। (Jôkhôn sôndhya holo, tôkhôn amra baṛi phire elam. — When evening fell, we returned home.) Marking notes: one mark for each joining that keeps the subordinate clause first; one for a correct correlative pair (যখন…তখন or যে…সে); one for the story sentence with a connector not used in (a) or (b). A future verb inside a যদি clause loses that sentence's mark.
Going deeper: -বার clauses and a worked morning
The suffix -বার (-bar) on a verb stem makes time clauses without যখন: আসবার সময় (asbar sômôy, at the time of coming), যাবার আগে (jabar age, before going), খাবার পর (khabar pôr, after eating). You will hear যাবার/খাবার shortened in speech, but write the full forms.
- ঘুম থেকে ওঠবার পর মুখ ধুই। (Ghum theke oṭhbar pôr mukh dhui. — After getting up from sleep, I wash my face.)
- স্কুলে যাবার আগে নাস্তা খাই। (Skule jabar age nasta khai. — Before going to school, I eat breakfast.)
- বাড়ি ফিরবার পথে বাজার করি। (Baṛi phirbar pôthe bajar kori. — On the way back home, I do the shopping.)
Now watch every connector of this lesson working in one paragraph — a model of the flowing style you are aiming at:
যখন সকাল হলো, তখন রিনা উঠল। কারণ আজ পরীক্ষা, সে তাড়াতাড়ি তৈরি হলো। যাবার আগে সে বইটা আবার দেখল। যদি বাস দেরি করে, সে রিকশা নেবে। মা বললেন, "মন দিয়ে লিখো।" রিনা হাসল, কারণ সে তৈরি ছিল। (Jôkhôn sôkal holo, tôkhôn Rina uṭhlô. Karôn aj porīkṣa, se taṛataṛi toiri holo. Jabar age se boiṭa abar dekhlô. Jodi bas deri kôre, se rikśa nebe. Ma bollen, "Môn diye likho." Rina haslô, karôn se toiri chhilo. — When morning came, Rina got up. Because the exam was today, she got ready quickly. Before leaving she looked at the book once more. If the bus is late, she will take a rickshaw. Mother said, "Write attentively." Rina smiled, because she was ready.)
Five connectors — যখন…তখন, কারণ (twice, in two positions), যাবার আগে, যদি — in six sentences. That density is normal Bangla prose, and it is exactly the density the Exam Experience below rewards.
