Lesson 20: Literature & Capstone — Thiruvalluvar, Kamban & Your Essay — இலக்கியம் மற்றும் இறுதிக் கட்டுரை

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Your final lesson gathers everything — script, grammar, registers — into the oldest Tamil art: literature. You will meet Thiruvalluvar again through his couplets, enter the world of Kamban's epic, and plan the capstone essay that proves what you can now do in Tamil.

Thiruvalluvar: the poet of universal ethics

திருவள்ளுவர் (Thiruvalluvar) is honoured with statues across Tamil Nadu, including the 133-foot statue at Kanyakumari — one foot for each of the Kural's 133 chapters. His couplets divide into அறத்துப்பால் (virtue), பொருட்பால் (wealth and polity) and காமத்துப்பால் (love). Three more couplets to own:

  • செயற்கரிய செய்வார் பெரியர்; சிறியர் செயற்கரிய செய்கலா தார். — Seyaṟkariya seivār periyar; siṟiyar seyaṟkariya seigalā thār. — The great do what is hard to do; the small do not accomplish the hard. (Kural 26, "Greatness")
  • நன்றி மறப்பது நன்றன்று; நன்றல்லது அன்றே மறப்பது நன்று. — Naṉṟi maṟappadhu naṉṟaṉṟu; naṉṟalladhu aṉṟē maṟappadhu naṉṟu. — It is not good to forget a kindness; it is good to forget at once what is not a kindness (an injury). (Kural 108)
  • இனிய உளவாக இன்னாது கூறல் கனியிருக்கக் காய் கவர்ந்தற்று. — Iṉiya uḷavāga iṉṉādhu kūṟal kaṉiyirukkak kāi kavarnthaṟṟu. — Speaking harsh words when sweet ones are available is like choosing the unripe fruit when the ripe fruit is at hand. (Kural 100)

The third couplet is the Kural's own lesson in politeness — remember it whenever Lesson 9's registers feel like a burden.

Kamban and the Ramayana

கம்பன் (Kamban), the 12th-century master, retold the Ramayana as கம்பராமாயணம் (Kamba Rāmāyaṇam) — not a translation but a Tamil re-creation, famed for music, metaphor and moral depth. Tamil tradition calls him கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தி (Kavichchakkaravarththi, emperor of poets). A characteristic Kamban moment, paraphrased in prose for learners: ராமன் காட்டுக்குச் சென்றபோது, அயோத்தி நகரம் அழுதது என்பர் — Rāmaṉ kāṭṭukkuch seṉṟa pōdhu, Ayōththi nagaram azhudhadhu eṉpar — When Rama went to the forest, they say the city of Ayodhya wept. Epic Tamil personifies cities, rivers and forests; reading Kamban trains you to love that density.

Names you will meet in the epic: ராமன் (Rāmaṉ, Rama), சீதை (Sīdhai, Sita), இலக்குவன்/லட்சுமணன் (Ilakkuvaṉ/Laṭchumaṇaṉ, Lakshmana), அனுமன் (Aṉumaṉ, Hanuman), இராவணன் (Irāvaṇaṉ, Ravana), குகன் (Kugaṉ, Guha, the boatman who becomes Rama's brother by love).

Reading passage: a student's visit to the Valluvar statue

நாங்கள் கன்னியாகுமரிக்குச் சுற்றுலா போனோம். — Nāngaḷ Kaṉṉiyākumarikkuch suṟṟulā pōṉōm. — We went on a trip to Kanyakumari. அங்கே திருவள்ளுவர் சிலை கடலில் நிற்கிறது. — Angē Thiruvaḷḷuvar silai kaḍalil niṟkiṟadhu. — There the statue of Thiruvalluvar stands in the sea. சிலை 133 அடி உயரம்; அது குறளின் 133 அதிகாரங்களைக் குறிக்கும். — Silai 133 aḍi uyaram; adhu Kuṟaḷin 133 adhigārangaḷaik kuṟikkum. — The statue is 133 feet tall; it signifies the 133 chapters of the Kural. ஆசிரியர் சொன்னார்: "வள்ளுவர் எல்லா மக்களுக்கும் பொதுவானவர்." — Āchiriyar soṉṉār: "Vaḷḷuvar ellā makkaḷukkum podhuvāṉavar." — The teacher said: "Valluvar belongs to all people in common." நான் ஒரு குறளைப் படித்தேன்: "கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை." — Nān oru kuṟaḷaip paḍiththēn: "Kaṟka kasaḍaṟak kaṟpavai." — I read a kural: "Learn flawlessly what is to be learned."

Comprehension questions: 1. Where did the students go? 2. Where does the statue stand, and how tall is it? 3. What does its height signify? 4. What did the teacher say about Valluvar? 5. Which kural did the narrator read? Answer key: 1. Kanyakumari. 2. In the sea; 133 feet. 3. The 133 chapters of the Thirukkural. 4. That Valluvar is common to (belongs to) all people. 5. கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை — "Learn flawlessly what must be learned."

The capstone essay: your task

Your capstone is a formal essay in Tamil of 120–180 words on one of these topics:

  • எனக்குப் பிடித்த நூல் — Enakkup piḍiththa nūl — The book I like best
  • தமிழ் கற்ற அனுபவம் — Thamizh kaṟṟa aṉubavam — My experience of learning Tamil
  • என் ஊர் — En ūr — My town
  • கல்வியின் முக்கியத்துவம் — Kalviyin mukkiyaththuvam — The importance of education

Structure: தலைப்பு (title) → அறிமுகம் (introduction, 2–3 sentences) → கருத்துகள் (main points with உதாரணமாக examples) → முடிவுரை (conclusion, restating your view, perhaps closing with a kural or proverb). Written register throughout: full verb forms, எனவே/மேலும் connectors, one என்று clause, at least one conditional, at least one passive or formal nominalisation.

Sample capstone paragraph (model opening)

தலைப்பு: தமிழ் கற்ற அனுபவம் — Thalaippu: Thamizh kaṟṟa aṉubavam — Title: My Experience of Learning Tamil. நான் ஒரு ஆண்டாகத் தமிழ் கற்று வருகிறேன். — Nān oru āṇḍāgath Thamizh kaṟṟu varugiṟēn. — For one year I have been learning Tamil. முதலில் எழுத்துகள் கடினமாகத் தோன்றின; ஆனால் நாளடைவில் அவை எளிதாயின. — Mudhalil ezhuththugaḷ kaḍiṉamāgath thōṉṟiṉa; ānāl nāḷaḍaivil avai eḷidhāyiṉa. — At first the letters seemed difficult; but in time they became easy. உதாரணமாக, ழ என்ற எழுத்து இப்போது எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடிக்கும். — Udhāraṇamāga, zha eṉṟa ezhuththu ippōdhu enakku migavum piḍikkum. — For example, I now love the letter ழ. தமிழ் கற்றதால் ஒரு புதிய உலகம் எனக்குத் திறக்கப்பட்டது. — Thamizh kaṟṟadhāl oru pudhiya ulagam enakkuth thiṟakkappaṭṭadhu. — Because I learned Tamil, a new world was opened to me. எனவே, மொழி கற்பது பயணம் போன்றது என்று நினைக்கிறேன். — Eṉavē, mozhi kaṟpadhu payaṇam pōṉṟadhu eṉṟu niṉaikkiṟēn. — Therefore, I think learning a language is like a journey.

Pronunciation focus: reading your essay aloud

Formal reading keeps every syllable: மொழிபெயர்க்கப்பட்டது must never collapse. Mark the long vowels of your key nouns (இலக்கியம் ilakkiyam, பாரம்பரியம் pārampariyam) and read the final delivery at a steady pace, pausing at semicolons the way the text breathes. Record your capstone and compare it against your Lesson 2 recording — the distance between them is your progress, made audible.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: opening a formal essay with spoken style: "நா தமிழ் கத்துக்கிட்டேன்…" — Right: நான் தமிழ் கற்றுக் கொண்டேன்/கற்று வருகிறேன் — formal register from the first word.
  • Wrong: quoting a kural from memory with vowel changes: கற்க கசடற கற்பவை கற்றபின்… (கசடறக் losing its -அக). — Right: கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை — quotations must be letter-exact.
  • Wrong: இராமாயணம் described as கம்பனின் மொழிபெயர்ப்பு (Kamban's translation). — Right: கம்பராமாயணம் is Kamban's own Tamil re-creation (படைப்பு, paḍaippu) of Valmiki's story.
  • Wrong: முடிவுரை (conclusion) that introduces a brand-new point. — Right: conclusions restate and elevate: end with your thesis or a proverb, never with new evidence.
Try it. Try it. Choose your capstone topic now. Write the title, a three-line plan in English, and your opening two sentences in Tamil. Then read aloud one kural from this lesson until you can say it from memory with the 4+3 rhythm.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read and answer in English.

கம்பன் தமிழில் இராமாயணத்தைப் புதிதாகப் படைத்தார். — Kambaṉ Thamizhil Irāmāyaṇaththaip pudhidhāgap paḍaiththār. — Kamban created the Ramayana anew in Tamil. அவர் "கவிச்சக்கரவர்த்தி" என்று போற்றப்படுகிறார். — Avar "Kavichchakkaravarththi" eṉṟu pōṟṟappaḍugiṟār. — He is praised as the "Emperor of Poets". கம்பராமாயணத்தில் இசையும் உவமைகளும் மிகுதி. — Kambarāmāyaṇaththil isaiyum uvamaigaḷum migudhi. — In the Kamba Ramayanam, music and similes abound. இன்றும் அந்த நூல் பள்ளிகளிலும் பல்கலைக்கழகங்களிலும் படிக்கப்படுகிறது. — Iṉṟum andha nūl paḷḷigaḷilum palkalaikkazhagangaḷilum paḍikkappaḍugiṟadhu. — Even today that work is studied in schools and universities.

Questions: 1. What did Kamban do with the Ramayana? 2. What title is he honoured with? 3. What two qualities abound in his work? 4. Where is it studied today? Key: 1. He re-created it anew in Tamil (not a mere translation). 2. Emperor of Poets. 3. Music and similes. 4. In schools and universities.

Multiple choice. 1. The 133-foot Valluvar statue at Kanyakumari signifies (a) Valluvar's age (b) the 133 chapters of the Kural (c) 133 couplets (d) the years of his life — Answer: (b). One foot per chapter of the Thirukkural. 2. Kural 100 compares harsh speech despite available sweet words to (a) drinking poison (b) choosing the unripe fruit when ripe fruit is at hand (c) breaking a pot (d) walking in darkness — Answer: (b). கனி (ripe fruit) at hand, yet காய் (unripe fruit) chosen. 3. சிலப்பதிகாரம் was composed by (a) Kamban (b) Thiruvalluvar (c) Iḷangō Aḍigaḷ (d) Bharathiyar — Answer: (c). Iḷangō Aḍigaḷ wrote the Silappadhikāram, the epic of Kannagi.

Guided writing (capstone rehearsal). Write the opening paragraph of your capstone essay (about 60–80 words in Tamil) on one set topic, using the formal register, one என்று clause and one conditional. Model answer: என் ஊர் ஒரு சிறிய, அமைதியான ஊர். — En ūr oru siṟiya, amaidhiyāṉa ūr. — My town is a small, peaceful town. ஊரில் ஒரு பழைய கோவிலும் ஒரு பெரிய குளமும் இருக்கின்றன. — Ūril oru pazhaiya kōvilum oru periya kuḷamum irukkiṉṟaṉa. — In the town there are an old temple and a big pond. மழை பெய்தால், குளம் நிரம்பும்; குழந்தைகள் கரையில் விளையாடுவார்கள். — Mazhai peidhāl, kuḷam nirambum; kuzhandhaigaḷ karaiyil viḷaiyāḍuvārgaḷ. — If it rains, the pond fills; the children play on its bank. என் ஊர் எனக்கு உலகிலேயே சிறந்த இடம் என்று நான் நினைக்கிறேன். — En ūr enakku ulagilēyē siṟandha iḍam eṉṟu nān niṉaikkiṟēn. — I think my town is the best place in the world for me. Marking notes: one mark for formal register sustained (no spoken reductions), one for the என்று opinion clause, one for a correct -ஆல் conditional, one for descriptive vocabulary beyond the basic set, one for an opening that promises a clear thesis. This rehearsal paragraph may be reused as the opening of the full capstone.

Going deeper: the capstone phrase bank and a model conclusion

Keep this bank beside you as you draft. Each phrase is formal, safe, and examinable:

முடிவாக, தமிழ் கற்றது என் வாழ்வில் மறக்க முடியாத அனுபவம். — Muḍivāga, Thamizh kaṟṟadhu en vāzhvil maṟakka muḍiyādha aṉubavam. — In conclusion, learning Tamil is an unforgettable experience in my life. இந்த மொழியால் நான் புதிய நண்பர்களையும் புதிய இலக்கியத்தையும் அடைந்தேன். — Indha mozhiyāl nān pudhiya naṇbargaḷaiyum pudhiya ilakkiyaththaiyum aḍaindhēn. — Through this language I gained new friends and a new literature. வள்ளுவர் சொன்னது போல, "கற்க கசடறக் கற்பவை, கற்றபின் நிற்க அதற்குத் தக." — Vaḷḷuvar soṉṉadhu pōla, "Kaṟka kasaḍaṟak kaṟpavai, kaṟṟapiṉ niṟka adhaṟkuth thaga." — As Valluvar said, "Learn flawlessly what must be learned; having learned, live accordingly." நானும் அவ்வாறே வாழ முயல்வேன். — Nāṉum avvāṟē vāzha muyalvēn. — I too will strive to live that way.

Close your essay the way this paragraph does: restate, widen, quote, resolve. That arc — restate → widen → quote → resolve — is the signature of a strong Tamil முடிவுரை, and examiners reward it.
