Lesson 6: Cases & Postpositions — ஐ, க்கு, இல், இலிருந்து, ஆல், உடைய

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

In Lesson 4 you learned that Tamil puts the verb last and marks the subject on the verb. But how do you say "to me", "in Chennai", "from home", "with a pen", "Ravi's book"? Tamil answers with cases: suffixes attached to the noun itself. This lesson teaches the six workhorse cases and the postpositions that follow nouns.

The case system at a glance

CaseSuffixFunctionExampleMeaning
Accusative-ஐ (-ai)direct objectபுத்தகத்தை — puththagaththaithe book (as object)
Dative-க்கு (-kku)to, forஎனக்கு — enakkuto me, for me
Locative-இல் (-il)in, at, onவீட்டில் — vīṭṭilin the house
Ablative-இலிருந்து (-ilirundhu)fromவீட்டிலிருந்து — vīṭṭilirundhufrom the house
Instrumental-ஆல் (-āl)by, with (tool)பேனாவால் — pēṉāvālwith a pen
Genitive-உடைய / -இன் (-uḍaiya / -in)of, 'sரவியுடைய — RaviyuḍaiyaRavi's

Two sandhi rules do most of the work. First, nouns ending in -ம் (-m) change ம் → த்த் before a case suffix: புத்தகம் → புத்தகத்தை (puththagaththai), புத்தகத்தில் (puththagaththil, in the book). Second, short nouns often double their final consonant or add -இன்-: வீடு → வீட்டில் (vīṭṭil, in the house), மரம் → மரத்தில் (maraththil, in/on the tree). The dative adds -க்- after vowels: பள்ளி → பள்ளிக்கு (paḷḷikku, to school); நான் → எனக்கு (enakku, to me); நீங்கள் → உங்களுக்கு (ungaḷukku, to you).

The cases in sentences

  • நான் புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கிறேன். — Nān puththagaththaip paḍikkiṟēn. — I read the book. (accusative -ஐ)
  • ஆசிரியர் மாணவனுக்குப் புத்தகம் கொடுக்கிறார். — Āchiriyar māṇavaṉukkup puththagam koḍukkiṟār. — The teacher gives a book to the student. (dative -க்கு)
  • நாங்கள் சென்னையில் வாழ்கிறோம். — Nāngaḷ Chennaiyil vāzhgiṟōm. — We live in Chennai. (locative -இல்)
  • அவன் வீட்டிலிருந்து வருகிறான். — Avaṉ vīṭṭilirundhu varugiṟāṉ. — He comes from home. (ablative -இலிருந்து)
  • அவள் பேனாவால் எழுதுகிறாள். — Avaḷ pēṉāvāl ezhudhugiṟāḷ. — She writes with a pen. (instrumental -ஆல்)
  • இது ரவியுடைய புத்தகம். — Idhu Raviyuḍaiya puththagam. — This is Ravi's book. (genitive -உடைய)

The pronouns change their stems in the cases — learn these as whole words:

Pronoun"to me/you…" (dative)"in/from me…" stem"my/your…" (genitive)
நான் (nān, I)எனக்கு (enakku)என்- (en-)என் / என்னுடைய (en / enṉuḍaiya)
நீ (nī, you fam.)உனக்கு (uṉakku)உன்- (uṉ-)உன் / உன்னுடைய (uṉ / uṉṉuḍaiya)
நீங்கள் (nīngaḷ, you pol.)உங்களுக்கு (ungaḷukku)உங்கள்- (ungaḷ-)உங்கள் (ungaḷ)
அவன் (avaṉ, he)அவனுக்கு (avaṉukku)அவன்- (avaṉ-)அவனுடைய (avaṉuḍaiya)
அவள் (avaḷ, she)அவளுக்கு (avaḷukku)அவள்- (avaḷ-)அவளுடைய (avaḷuḍaiya)

Postpositions: words that follow the noun

Postpositions do the work of English prepositions but come after the noun, often with the noun in a case form.

Reading passage: Meera's journey

மீரா மதுரையில் வாழ்கிறாள். — Mīrā Madhuraiyil vāzhgiṟāḷ. — Meera lives in Madurai. இன்று அவள் சென்னைக்குப் போகிறாள். — Iṉṟu avaḷ Chennaikkup pōgiṟāḷ. — Today she is going to Chennai. அவள் வீட்டிலிருந்து ரயில் நிலையத்துக்குப் போகிறாள். — Avaḷ vīṭṭilirundhu rayil nilaiyaththukkup pōgiṟāḷ. — She goes from home to the railway station. ரயிலில் அவள் ஒரு புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கிறாள். — Rayilil avaḷ oru puththagaththaip paḍikkiṟāḷ. — On the train she reads a book. சென்னையில் அவளுடைய அக்கா வாழ்கிறாள். — Chennaiyil avaḷuḍaiya akkā vāzhgiṟāḷ. — Her elder sister lives in Chennai. மீரா அக்காவுக்கு ஒரு பரிசு வாங்குகிறாள். — Mīrā akkāvukku oru parisu vāṅgugiṟāḷ. — Meera buys a gift for her sister.

Comprehension questions: 1. Where does Meera live? 2. Where is she going today? 3. How does she travel (from where to where)? 4. What does she do on the train? 5. Who lives in Chennai, and what does Meera buy? Answer key: 1. Madurai. 2. Chennai. 3. From home to the railway station, then by train. 4. Reads a book. 5. Her elder sister; Meera buys her a gift.

Pronunciation focus: case suffixes and doubling

Listen to the doubling where cases meet stems: பள்ளிக்கு (paḷḷikku) — the க்க is a real held beat, and it marks the dative. In சென்னைக்கு (Chennaikku) the diphthong ஐ becomes ஐக் before -கு. Practise the triple: வீடு (vīḍu, house) — வீட்டில் (vīṭṭil, in the house) — வீட்டிலிருந்து (vīṭṭilirundhu, from the house), keeping ட retroflex and the doubled ட்ட crisp.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: நான் புத்தகம் படிக்கிறேன் for a specific, known book. — Right: நான் புத்தகத்தைப் படிக்கிறேன் — Nān puththagaththaip paḍikkiṟēn. A definite object takes -ஐ; the suffix-less form suits indefinite "a book / books in general".
  • Wrong: என் கொடு ("to I give"). — Right: எனக்குக் கொடு — Enakkuk koḍu — Give (it) to me. Pronouns have special dative forms.
  • Wrong: சென்னையிலிருந்து written சென்னை இருந்து as two loose words. — Right: சென்னையிலிருந்து — Chennaiyilirundhu — the ablative is one fused suffix chain: place + -இல் + இருந்து.
  • Wrong: பேனாவில் எழுதுகிறேன் ("writes in a pen"). — Right: பேனாவால் எழுதுகிறேன் — Pēṉāvāl ezhudhugiṟēn — the tool takes the instrumental -ஆல், not the locative -இல்.
Try it. Try it. Describe your journey to school or work in five sentences, using at least one example each of -க்கு, -இல் and -இலிருந்து. Then say where five objects in front of you are, using மேல், கீழ், முன், பின் and அருகில்.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read and answer in English.

குமார் கோவையில் வாழ்கிறான். — Kumār Kōvaiyil vāzhgiṟāṉ. — Kumar lives in Coimbatore. அவன் தினமும் பேருந்தில் அலுவலகத்துக்குப் போகிறான். — Avaṉ dhinamum pērundhil aluvalagaththukkup pōgiṟāṉ. — Every day he goes to the office by bus. அலுவலகத்தில் அவன் கணினியால் வேலை செய்கிறான். — Aluvalagaththil avaṉ kaṇiṉiyāl vēlai seigiṟāṉ. — At the office he works with a computer. மாலையில் அவன் அலுவலகத்திலிருந்து சந்தைக்குப் போகிறான். — Mālaiyil avaṉ aluvalagaththilirundhu sandhaikkup pōgiṟāṉ. — In the evening he goes from the office to the market. அவன் அம்மாவுக்குக் காய்கறிகள் வாங்குகிறான். — Avaṉ ammāvukkuk kāigaṟigaḷ vāṅgugiṟāṉ. — He buys vegetables for his mother.

Questions: 1. Where does Kumar live? 2. How does he travel to the office? 3. What does he work with? 4. Where does he go in the evening, and from where? 5. Who does he buy vegetables for? Key: 1. Coimbatore. 2. By bus. 3. A computer. 4. From the office to the market. 5. His mother.

Multiple choice. 1. "From the house" is (a) வீட்டில் (b) வீட்டுக்கு (c) வீட்டிலிருந்து (d) வீட்டால் — Answer: (c). -இலிருந்து is the ablative "from"; (a) is "in the house", (b) "to the house", (d) "by the house". 2. எனக்கு means (a) my (b) to me (c) from me (d) with me — Answer: (b). எனக்கு is the dative of நான். "My" is என்/என்னுடைய; "with me" is என்னுடன். 3. In நான் கடிதத்தை எழுதுகிறேன் (I write the letter), கடிதத்தை carries (a) locative (b) dative (c) accusative (d) instrumental — Answer: (c). -ஐ marks the definite direct object, with ம் → த்த் sandhi: கடிதம் → கடிதத்தை.

Guided writing. Write four sentences saying where things are in your home and who they belong to. Frames: … இல் … இருக்கிறது. (… il … irukkiṟadhu — … is in …). இது … உடைய … . (Idhu … uḍaiya … — This is …'s …). Model answer: புத்தகம் மேசை மேல் இருக்கிறது. — Puththagam mēsai mēl irukkiṟadhu. — The book is on the table. பேனா புத்தகத்தின் அருகில் இருக்கிறது. — Pēṉā puththagaththin arugil irukkiṟadhu. — The pen is near the book. இது என் தம்பியுடைய பேனா. — Idhu en thambiyuḍaiya pēṉā. — This is my younger brother's pen. நாற்காலி ஜன்னலின் முன் இருக்கிறது. — Nāṟkāli jaṉṉalin muṉ irukkiṟadhu. — The chair is in front of the window. Marking notes: one mark per correct case suffix (locative, genitive -இன் before a postposition, genitive -உடைய), one mark for correct sandhi (புத்தகம் → புத்தகத்தின்). Deduct once, not per sentence, for the same repeated sandhi error.

Going deeper: describing a place, and more postpositions

Three more useful postpositions: நடுவில் (naḍuvil, in the middle of), சுற்றி (suṟṟi, around), வழியாக (vazhiyāga, through, by way of), எதிரில் (edhiril, opposite), பக்கத்தில் (pakkaththil, beside, next to).

Read this description of a village scene, watching every locative and postposition:

கிராமத்தின் நடுவில் ஒரு பெரிய குளம் இருக்கிறது. — Kirāmaththin naḍuvil oru periya kuḷam irukkiṟadhu. — In the middle of the village there is a big pond. குளத்தைச் சுற்றி மரங்கள் நிற்கின்றன. — Kuḷaththaich suṟṟi marangaḷ niṟkiṉṟaṉa. — Trees stand around the pond. குளத்தின் எதிரில் ஒரு சிறிய கோவில் இருக்கிறது. — Kuḷaththin edhiril oru siṟiya kōvil irukkiṟadhu. — Opposite the pond there is a small temple. கோவிலின் பக்கத்தில் பள்ளி இருக்கிறது. — Kōvilin pakkaththil paḷḷi irukkiṟadhu. — Beside the temple is the school. பள்ளியிலிருந்து குளம் வழியாக வீட்டுக்கு ஒரு பாதை போகிறது. — Paḷḷiyilirundhu kuḷam vazhiyāga vīṭṭukku oru pādhai pōgiṟadhu. — A path goes from the school, by way of the pond, to the house. குழந்தைகள் அந்தப் பாதையில் நடக்கிறார்கள். — Kuzhandhaigaḷ andhap pādhaiyil naḍakkiṟārgaḷ. — The children walk on that path.

More case practice — one noun, all six cases: வீடு (vīḍu, house):

வீட்டிலிருந்துvīṭṭilirundhufrom the house
வீட்டால்vīṭṭālby/with the house (rare; use for instruments: கத்தியால், kaththiyāl, with a knife)
வீட்டின் / வீட்டுடையvīṭṭin / vīṭṭuḍaiyaof the house / the house's

Questions on the passage: 1. What is in the middle of the village? 2. What stands around it? 3. What is opposite the pond, and what is beside that? 4. Where does the path run? Key: 1. A big pond. 2. Trees. 3. A small temple; the school is beside the temple. 4. From the school, via the pond, to the house.
