🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.
A language comes alive when you can name the world around you. In this lesson you learn more than twenty core words — the words a Tamil speaker uses every single day — together with the grammar you need to group them: numbers, colours, family words, and the art of asking "what is this?"

Asking and answering: என்ன? (enna, what?)
The frame இது என்ன? — Idhu enna? — What is this? and அது என்ன? — Adhu enna? — What is that? unlocks the whole vocabulary. Answers use the frame இது ஒரு … — Idhu oru … — This is a …
- இது என்ன? — Idhu enna? — What is this?
- இது ஒரு புத்தகம். — Idhu oru puththagam. — This is a book.
- அது என்ன? — Adhu enna? — What is that?
- அது ஒரு பெரிய மரம். — Adhu oru periya maram. — That is a big tree.
- இந்தப் பூ என்ன நிறம்? — Indhap pū enna niṟam? — What colour is this flower?
- இந்தப் பூ சிவப்பு நிறம். — Indhap pū sivappu niṟam. — This flower is red in colour.
- என்னிடம் மூன்று பேனாக்கள் இருக்கின்றன. — Enṉiḍam mūṉṟu pēṉākkaḷ irukkiṉṟaṉa. — I have three pens (literally: with me, three pens exist).
Reading passage: Divya's room
இது திவ்யாவின் அறை. — Idhu Dhivyāvin aṟai. — This is Divya's room. அறையில் ஒரு மேசை, ஒரு நாற்காலி, மூன்று புத்தகங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. — Aṟaiyil oru mēsai, oru nāṟkāli, mūṉṟu puththagangaḷ irukkiṉṟaṉa. — In the room there are a table, a chair and three books. ஜன்னல் அருகே ஒரு பூச்செடி இருக்கிறது. — Jaṉṉal arugē oru pūchcheḍi irukkiṟadhu. — Near the window there is a flowering plant. பூ சிவப்பு நிறம். — Pū sivappu niṟam. — The flower is red. திவ்யா இங்கே படிக்கிறாள், எழுதுகிறாள். — Dhivyā ingē paḍikkiṟāḷ, ezhudhugiṟāḷ. — Divya studies and writes here.
Comprehension questions: 1. Whose room is it? 2. Name three things in the room. 3. Where is the plant? 4. What colour is the flower? 5. What two things does Divya do here? Answer key: 1. Divya's. 2. A table, a chair, three books (any three). 3. Near the window. 4. Red. 5. She studies and writes.
Pronunciation focus: ற (ṟa) and ட (ṭa) in everyday words
Listen for ற in நாற்காலி (nāṟkāli, chair) and ஆறு (āṟu, six/river): a firm trill. In ஏழு (ēzhu, seven) the ழ must curl — if you say "ēlu" you have said something else entirely. Practise the minimal set: ஏழு (ēzhu, seven) — ஏலு is not a word, but ஏலம் (ēlam, cardamom/auction) shows the ல form. Also keep the dental த of தண்ணீர் (thaṇṇīr, water) light, with the tongue on the teeth — an English-style hard t makes it sound like ட.
Common mistakes
- Wrong: ஒரு புத்தகங்கள் (using the plural after ஒரு, a/one). — Right: ஒரு புத்தகம் — oru puththagam — one book. ஒரு always takes the singular.
- Wrong: அது ஒரு மரம் பெரிய (adjective after the noun). — Right: அது ஒரு பெரிய மரம் — Adhu oru periya maram — adjectives come before the noun in Tamil.
- Wrong: calling any brother "அண்ணன்". — Right: அண்ணன் (aṇṇaṉ) is only an elder brother; a younger brother is தம்பி (thambi).
- Wrong: எட்டு pronounced "ettu". — Right: எட்டு — eṭṭu — eight, with a retroflex, doubled ṭṭ.
