Lesson 20: Literature & Capstone — Kabir, Premchand & Your Essay — साहित्य और समापन निबंध
🎧 Listen to this lesson
The capstone. You end the course where Hindi begins — with its poets and storytellers. This lesson reads Kabir, the weaver-poet whose couplets India still quotes daily; returns to Premchand and the art of prose; and sets your final task: a full Hindi essay, planned, written and polished by you.
Kabir and the दोहा (dohā, couplet)
कबीर (Kabīr, c. 1440–1518) wove cloth in Banaras and wove wisdom into two-line poems that a farmer could memorise and a philosopher could ponder. His language, an old mixed dialect, uses forms modern Hindi has changed — मुआ (muā, died — modern मरा), भया (bhayā, became — modern हुआ), काके (kāke, whose — modern किसके). Read his words as a bridge: old on the surface, immediate underneath.
दोहा 1 — on true learning: पोथी पढ़ि पढ़ि जग मुआ, पंडित भया न कोय। ढाई आखर प्रेम का, पढ़े सो पंडित होय॥ (Poṭhī paṛhi paṛhi jag muā, paṇḍit bhayā na koy. Ḍhāī ākhar prem kā, paṛhe so paṇḍit hoy. — Reading book after book, the world died and none became truly learned. Whoever reads the two-and-a-half letters of "prem" (love) — that one is wise.)
दोहा 2 — on looking inward: बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय। जो दिल खोजा आपना, मुझसे बुरा न कोय॥ (Burā jo dekhan maiṁ calā, burā na miliyā koy. Jo dil khojā āpanā, mujhse burā na koy. — I went out looking for the bad and found none anywhere. When I searched my own heart, there was no one worse than me.)
दोहा 3 — on the teacher: गुरु गोविन्द दोऊ खड़े, काके लागू पाय। बलिहारी गुरु आपने, गोविन्द दियो बताय॥ (Guru Govind doū khaṛe, kāke lāgū pāy. Balihārī guru āpane, Govind diyo batāy. — Guru and God both stand before me — at whose feet should I bow first? I am devoted to my Guru, for he showed me the way to God.)
Notice how each doha argues: a picture in line one, a turn of thought in line two. That hinge — observation, then insight — is the shape of good Hindi writing at every level, including your essay.
Premchand and the prose of truth
Premchand (Lesson 11) built the modern Hindi story on three pillars you can borrow: plain language that a village reader could follow, real detail (a tongs, a torn shawl, a winter night) that carries the theme, and compassion for ordinary people. His famous works: गोदान (Godān), गबन (Gaban), निर्मला (Nirmalā); stories ईदगाह (Īdgāh), कफ़न (Kafan), पूस की रात (Pūs kī Rāt), नमक का दरोगा (Namak kā Darogā). Read this practice paragraph, written for this lesson in his manner, about a classroom before dawn of exam day:
परीक्षा का दिन था। (Parīkṣā kā din thā. — It was the day of the examination.) मास्टर जी सबसे पहले आए। (Māstar jī sabse pahle āe. — The teacher came first of all.) उनके हाथ में पुरानी घड़ी थी, जो हर वर्ष की तरह आज भी पाँच मिनट पीछे थी। (Unke hāth meṁ purānī ghaṛī thī, jo har varṣ kī tarah āj bhī pāṁc minaṭ pīche thī. — In his hand was an old watch, which, as every year, was five minutes slow today as well.) फिर भी उनका विश्वास समय से आगे था। (Phir bhī unkā viśvās samay se āge thā. — Yet his faith was ahead of time.)
The essay: your capstone (समापन निबंध)
A Hindi school essay has three movements:
- प्रस्तावना (prastāvnā, introduction) — open with a striking line, a doha, or the heart of your topic in two sentences.
- विषय-विस्तार (viṣay-vistār, development) — two or three paragraphs, each with one idea, one example, and connectors from Lesson 19 (इसके अलावा, दूसरी ओर, उदाहरण के लिए).
- निष्कर्ष (niṣkarṣ, conclusion) — restate your position in fresh words and end with a line worth remembering.
Useful essay phrases: सबसे पहले (sabse pahle, first of all), मेरे विचार से (mere vicār se, in my view), निष्कर्ष यह है कि… (niṣkarṣ yah hai ki…, the conclusion is that…), सच यह है कि… (sac yah hai ki…, the truth is that…).
Model capstone essay: मेरा प्रिय त्योहार (my favourite festival)
मेरा प्रिय त्योहार दिवाली है। (Merā priya tyohār Divālī hai. — My favourite festival is Diwali.) दिवाली अँधेरे पर रोशनी की जीत का त्योहार है। (Divālī andhere par rośnī kī jīt kā tyohār hai. — Diwali is the festival of light's victory over darkness.) इस दिन राम अयोध्या लौटे थे, इसलिए लोग दीये जलाकर उनका स्वागत करते हैं। (Is din Rām Ayodhyā lauṭe the, isliye log diye jalākar unkī svāgat karte haiṁ. — On this day Rama had returned to Ayodhya, so people light lamps to welcome him.) शाम को हम सब मिलकर घर सजाते हैं। (Śām ko ham sab milkar ghar sajāte haiṁ. — In the evening we all decorate the house together.) माँ स्वादिष्ट मिठाई बनाती हैं और हम पड़ोसियों को बाँटते हैं। (Māṁ svādiṣṭ miṭhāī banātī haiṁ aur ham paṛosiyoṁ ko bāṁṭte haiṁ. — Mother makes delicious sweets and we distribute them to the neighbours.) इसके अलावा, दिवाली हमें सिखाती है कि बुराई कितनी भी बड़ी हो, अच्छाई अंत में जीतती है। (Iske alāvā, Divālī hameṁ sikhātī hai ki burāī kitnī bhī baṛī ho, acchāī ant meṁ jīttī hai. — Besides this, Diwali teaches us that however great evil may be, goodness wins in the end.) इसलिए दिवाली सिर्फ़ एक त्योहार नहीं, एक सीख है। (Isliye Divālī sirf ek tyohār nahīṁ, ek sīkh hai. — That is why Diwali is not just a festival, but a lesson.)
Check yourself (on the dohas): 1. In Doha 1, what makes a person truly wise, according to Kabir? 2. In Doha 2, where does Kabir finally find fault? 3. In Doha 3, why does the Guru come before God? Answers: 1. Reading — truly learning — प्रेम (prem, love): the "two-and-a-half letters". 2. In his own heart (अपना दिल). 3. Because the Guru showed the way to God (गोविन्द दियो बताय).
Pronunciation notes
- Dohas are sung as much as read: two lines, a breath at the comma, a landing at ॥. Recite Doha 2 aloud until the turn of thought lands with the rhythm.
- Archaic forms keep old sounds: मुआ (muā), भया (bhayā) — do not "correct" them in recitation; Kabir's music lives in them.
- Essay reading voice is steady and formal — closer to the newsreader than to the playground.
Common mistakes
- Using Kabir's archaic forms in your own prose. Wrong (in an essay): वह घर मुआ। Right: वह घर गया। / वह मर गया। (for "died": मर गया). Quote the old forms; write in the new.
- An essay with no hinge. Lists of facts fail; every paragraph needs its turn — example, then इसीलिए/इसलिए a conclusion.
- Register drift. Playground slang (यार, क्या बात है) inside a formal essay breaks the spell. Keep the essay at the level of Lessons 17 and 19's formal frames.
- Copying the model. The capstone is *your* essay: a different festival, a different dream, your own examples — the marking rewards genuine structure, not memory.
Exam Experience
Reading. Read the passage and answer.
कबीर कहते हैं कि सच्चा ज्ञान किताबों से नहीं, प्रेम से मिलता है। (Kabīr kahte haiṁ ki saccā gyān kitāboṁ se nahīṁ, prem se miltā hai. — Kabir says that true knowledge comes not from books, but from love.) प्रेमचंद की कहानियाँ हमें गाँव के जीवन की सच्चाई दिखाती हैं। (Premchand kī kahāniyāṁ hameṁ gāṁv ke jīvan kī saccāī dikhātī haiṁ. — Premchand's stories show us the truth of village life.) दोनों लेखक अलग-अलग समय के हैं, फिर भी दोनों की बात एक है — इंसानियत सबसे बड़ी चीज़ है। (Donoṁ lekhak alag-alag samay ke haiṁ, phir bhī donoṁ kī bāt ek hai — insāniyat sabse baṛī cīz hai. — The two writers belong to different eras, yet their message is one — humanity is the greatest thing.)
1. According to Kabir, where does true knowledge come from? 2. What do Premchand's stories show? 3. What single message unites the two writers? Answer key: 1. प्रेम से (prem se, from love). 2. गाँव के जीवन की सच्चाई (the truth of village life). 3. इंसानियत सबसे बड़ी चीज़ है (humanity is the greatest thing).

Guided writing — the capstone. Write a full essay of 130–160 words on मेरा सपना (my dream): प्रस्तावना, two विकास paragraphs (present effort and future hope), निष्कर्ष. Use at least three connectors and one subjunctive. Model answer (opening and plan, with one full paragraph): प्रस्तावना: हर इंसान का एक सपना होता है। मेरा सपना है कि मैं अपने गाँव में एक अच्छा विद्यालय बनाऊँ। (Har insān kā ek sapnā hotā hai. Merā sapnā hai ki maiṁ apne gāṁv meṁ ek acchā vidyālay banāūṁ. — Every person has a dream. My dream is that I may build a good school in my village.) विकास (full paragraph): मेरे गाँव के बच्चे पढ़ना चाहते हैं, लेकिन अच्छा स्कूल दूर है। (Mere gāṁv ke bacce paṛhnā cāhte haiṁ, lekin acchā skūl dūr hai. — The children of my village want to study, but a good school is far away.) इसके अलावा, कई लड़कियाँ आगे नहीं पढ़ पातीं। (Iske alāvā, kaī laṛkiyāṁ āge nahīṁ paṛh pātīṁ. — Besides this, many girls cannot study further.) उदाहरण के लिए, मेरी पड़ोस की मीना दसवीं के बाद घर बैठ गई। (Udāharaṇ ke lie, merī paṛos kī Mīnā dasvīṁ ke bād ghar baiṭh gaī. — For example, my neighbour Meena had to sit at home after Class 10.) मुझे लगता है कि शिक्षा ही हर समस्या की कुंजी है। (Mujhe lagtā hai ki śikṣā hī har samasyā kī kuñjī hai. — I think education is the key to every problem.) निष्कर्ष की पंक्ति: जहाँ चाह, वहाँ राह — मेहनत करूँ, तो सपना ज़रूर पूरा हो। (Jahāṁ cāh, vahāṁ rāh — mehnat karūṁ, to sapnā zarūr pūrā ho. — Where there is a will, there is a way — if I work hard, the dream will surely come true.) Marking notes: Twenty marks for the capstone essay. Structure: 5 (प्रस्तावना 1, two developed paragraphs 3, निष्कर्ष 1). Language: 8 (agreement, tense control, one accurate subjunctive — बनाऊँ/हो — connectors used correctly). Content: 4 (a real example, a personal voice). Register and script accuracy: 3 (Devanagari spelling, no slang). An essay that is merely the model with names changed earns at most half — the capstone examines *your* Hindi.
