Lesson 14: Health, Body & Weather — स्वास्थ्य, शरीर और मौसम

🎧 Listen to this lesson

Bodies and weather fill everyday conversation — and the doctor's clinic is the one place you cannot afford vague Hindi. This lesson teaches the body, the language of symptoms, the present continuous (रहा है, rahā hai — "is happening now"), and the weather words for talking about the sky.

Saying it hurts: the में दर्द pattern

Hindi does not say "my head is aching"; it says "there is pain in my head":

  • मेरे सिर में दर्द है। (Mere sir meṁ dard hai. — My head hurts — literally, there is pain in my head.)
  • उसके पेट में दर्द है। (Uske peṭ meṁ dard hai. — His stomach hurts.)
  • मेरी आँख में कुछ गया है। (Merī āṁkh meṁ kuch gayā hai. — Something has gone into my eye.)

And the fever family:

  • मुझे बुख़ार है। (Mujhe buxār hai. — I have a fever.)
  • मुझे खाँसी और ज़ुकाम है। (Mujhe khāṁsī aur zukām hai. — I have a cough and a cold.)
  • मेरी तबीयत ख़राब है। (Merī tabiyat xarāb hai. — I am unwell — literally, my health is bad.)
  • मुझे ठंड लग रही है। (Mujhe ṭhaṇḍ lag rahī hai. — I am feeling cold.) — लग रही है is the continuous of लगना (lagnā, to be felt), coming next.

The present continuous: रहा / रही / रहे + होना

For actions happening right now: stem + रहा (rahā, m) / रही (rahī, f) / रहे (rahe, pl) + होना.

  • वह पढ़ रहा है। (Vah paṛh rahā hai. — He is reading.)
  • वह पढ़ रही है। (Vah paṛh rahī hai. — She is reading.)
  • बच्चे खेल रहे हैं। (Bacce khel rahe haiṁ. — The children are playing.)
  • मैं चाय बना रहा हूँ। (Maiṁ cāy banā rahā hūṁ. — I am making tea.)
  • बारिश हो रही है। (Bāriś ho rahī hai. — It is raining.) — बारिश is feminine: रही.

Compare the two presents: वह पढ़ता है (vah paṛhtā hai, he reads — habit) versus वह पढ़ रहा है (he is reading — right now). Hindi keeps them strictly apart.

Weather: talking about the sky

WordTransliterationMeaning
मौसमmausamweather
गर्मीgarmīheat
सर्दीsardīcold
बारिशbāriśrain
धूपdhūpsunshine
हवाhavāwind, air
बादलbādalcloud
बिजलीbijlīlightning
तापमानtāpmāntemperature
  • आज बहुत गर्मी है। (Āj bahut garmī hai. — It is very hot today.)
  • हवा धीरे चल रही है। (Havā dhīre cal rahī hai. — The wind is blowing gently.)
  • मौसम विभाग के अनुसार कल बारिश होगी। (Mausam vibhāg ke anusār kal bāriś hogī. — According to the weather department, it will rain tomorrow.) — अनुसार (anusār, according to) follows its noun like a postposition.

Dialogue: at the clinic

  • डॉक्टर: क्या हुआ? (Kyā huā? — What happened?)
  • मरीज़ (marīz, patient): डॉक्टर साहब, मुझे दो दिन से बुख़ार है और गले में ख़राश है। (Doctor sāhab, mujhe do din se buxār hai aur gale meṁ xarāś hai. — Doctor, I have had a fever for two days and my throat is sore.)
  • डॉक्टर: मुँह खोलिए। … गहरी साँस लीजिए। (Muṁh kholiye. … Gahrī sāṁs lījiye. — Open your mouth. … Take a deep breath.)
  • डॉक्टर: यह दवा दिन में तीन बार लीजिए और आराम कीजिए। (Yah davā din meṁ tīn bār lījiye aur ārām kījiye. — Take this medicine three times a day and rest.)
  • मरीज़: धन्यवाद, डॉक्टर साहब। (Dhanyavād, doctor sāhab. — Thank you, Doctor.)

Check yourself: 1. For how long has the patient been ill? 2. Two symptoms? 3. What two instructions does the doctor give? Answers: 1. दो दिन से (do din se, for two days). 2. बुख़ार (fever) and गले में ख़राश (a sore throat). 3. दवा लीजिए (take the medicine, three times a day) and आराम कीजिए (rest).

Pronunciation notes

  • ख़ (x) is the throat sound of बुख़ार (buxār), खाँसी (khāṁsī), ख़राश (xarāś), ख़राब (xarāb). Without the dot-sound they become different words; with it, you sound local.
  • टाँग (ṭāṅg) and उंगली (uṅglī) carry nasal vowels — let the ँ ring.
  • रहा/रही (rahā/rahī) are light and quick inside the sentence; the weight falls on the main verb: PAṚH rahā hai.

Common mistakes

  • मेरा सिर दर्द है. Wrong. Right: मेरे सिर में दर्द है। (Mere sir meṁ dard hai.) Pain lives *in* a body part: body-part + में + दर्द है.
  • मुझे बुख़ार हूँ. Wrong. Right: मुझे बुख़ार है। (Mujhe buxār hai.) Feelings and illnesses come to you with मुझे + है, never हूँ.
  • Continuous for habits. Wrong (for "she reads daily"): वह रोज़ पढ़ रही है। Right: वह रोज़ पढ़ती है। रही है is only this moment.
  • आज बारिश है for "it is raining". Wrong tense and feel. Right now: बारिश हो रही है। (Bāriś ho rahī hai.)
Key idea. Illness grammar: मुझे + illness + है; pain: body part + में दर्द है. And keep the two presents apart — -ता है for habits, रहा/रही है for this very moment.
Try it. Look out of the window and say three weather sentences (one with हो रही है). Then play patient: tell an imaginary doctor two symptoms using मुझे … है and one … में दर्द है.

Exam Experience

Reading. Read the weather report.

आज का मौसम (Āj kā mausam — Today's weather) आज दिल्ली में तापमान चालीस डिग्री है। (Āj Dillī meṁ tāpmān cālīs degree hai. — Today in Delhi the temperature is forty degrees.) दिन भर तेज़ धूप रहेगी। (Din bhar tez dhūp rahegī. — There will be strong sunshine all day.) शाम को बादल आएँगे और हवा चलेगी। (Śām ko bādal āeṁge aur havā calegī. — In the evening clouds will come and the wind will blow.) कल बारिश होने की संभावना है। (Kal bāriś hone kī sambhāvnā hai. — There is a possibility of rain tomorrow.)

1. What is today's temperature in Delhi? 2. What will the evening bring (two things)? 3. What may happen tomorrow? Answer key: 1. चालीस डिग्री (cālīs degree, forty degrees). 2. बादल (clouds) and हवा (wind). 3. बारिश (rain) — संभावना (possibility) only.

Multiple choice. 1. "She is writing" right now is: (a) वह लिखता है (b) वह लिख रही है (c) वह लिखती रहेगी (d) वह लिखी है — Answer: (b). 2. "I have a cold" is: (a) मुझे ज़ुकाम हूँ (b) मेरा ज़ुकाम है (c) मुझे ज़ुकाम है (d) मैं ज़ुकाम है — Answer: (c). 3. मेरे … में दर्द है (stomach): (a) पेट (b) पेटों (c) पेटा (d) पेटी — Answer: (a). पेट does not change in the oblique singular.

Guided writing. Write a short note to your teacher: you are ill, name two symptoms, say you will rest, and ask for the homework. Model answer: आदरणीय शिक्षक महोदय, (Ādaraṇīya śikṣak mahoday, — Respected teacher,) मुझे कल से बुख़ार है और मेरे गले में दर्द है। (Mujhe kal se buxār hai aur mere gale meṁ dard hai. — I have had a fever since yesterday and my throat hurts.) मैं आज घर पर आराम करूँगा। (Maiṁ āj ghar par ārām karūṁgā. — I will rest at home today.) कृपया मुझे आज का गृहकार्य बता दीजिए। (Kṛpayā mujhe āj kā gṛhakārya batā dījiye. — Please tell me today's homework.) धन्यवाद। (Dhanyavād. — Thank you.) Marking notes: One mark per sentence. The illness structures are the exam target: मुझे … है for the fever, … में दर्द है for the pain — any "मेरा गला दर्द है" loses its mark. The respectful address (महोदय) and a कृपया request are credited as register marks.

Going deeper: the pharmacy, and India's seasons

At the pharmacy (दवाख़ाना):

  • ग्राहक: मुझे सिरदर्द की दवा चाहिए। (Mujhe sirdard kī davā cāhie. — I need medicine for a headache.)
  • दवावाला: यह गोली दिन में दो बार लीजिए। (Yah golī din meṁ do bār lījiye. — Take this tablet twice a day.) — गोली (golī, tablet, pill) is feminine.
  • ग्राहक: क्या यह दवा खाने के बाद लेनी है? (Kyā yah davā khāne ke bād lenī hai? — Is this medicine to be taken after food?)
  • दवावाला: जी हाँ। और पानी ख़ूब पीजिए। (Jī hāṁ. Aur pānī xūb pījiye. — Yes. And drink plenty of water.)
  • ग्राहक: कितने की है? (Kitne kī hai? — How much is it?) — की, because दवा/गोली is feminine.

More of the body — हड्डी (haḍḍī, bone, f), ख़ून (xūn, blood, m), त्वचा (tvacā, skin, f), फेफड़े (phephaṛe, lungs, m pl), मांसपेशी (māṁspeśī, muscle, f). Two sentences with them:

  • खेल में उसकी हड्डी टूट गई। (Khel meṁ uskī haḍḍī ṭūṭ gaī. — In the game, his bone broke.)
  • डॉक्टर ने कहा कि ख़ून की जाँच होगी। (Doctor ne kahā ki xūn kī jāṁc hogī. — The doctor said there would be a blood test.)

India's seasons — a reading paragraph: भारत में मुख्यतः तीन ऋतुएँ होती हैं — ग्रीष्म, वर्षा और शीत। (Bhārat meṁ mukhyataḥ tīn ṛtueṁ hotī haiṁ — grīṣm, varṣā aur śīt. — India mainly has three seasons — summer, the rains, and winter.) ग्रीष्म में तापमान बहुत बढ़ जाता है। (Grīṣm meṁ tāpmān bahut baṛh jātā hai. — In summer the temperature rises a lot.) वर्षा ऋतु में किसान ख़ुश होते हैं, क्योंकि खेतों को पानी मिलता है। (Varṣā ṛtu meṁ kisān xuś hote haiṁ, kyõki khetoṁ ko pānī miltā hai. — In the rainy season farmers are happy, because the fields get water.) शीत ऋतु में उत्तर भारत में ठंड बढ़ जाती है। (Śīt ṛtu meṁ uttar Bhārat meṁ ṭhaṇḍ baṛh jātī hai. — In winter the cold increases in North India.) वसंत को ऋतुओं का राजा कहा जाता है। (Vasant ko ṛtuoṁ kā rājā kahā jātā hai. — Spring is called the king of seasons.)

Try it. Be the pharmacist and the patient in turn: ask for cough medicine, hear the dose (दिन में तीन बार), confirm the price with कितने की है — then write tomorrow's weather in three sentences, one per ऋतु-word you can use.
