Lesson 15: School, Work & Opinions — स्कूल, काम और राय

🎧 Listen to this lesson

School and work are where your future gets discussed — in Hindi as in English. This lesson supplies the vocabulary of subjects and professions, and the grammar of opinions: how to say "I think that…", "in my view…", "I agree", and how to express duty and desire with मुझे … पढ़ना है (mujhe … paṛhnā hai, I have to study).

Giving opinions: the frames

FrameTransliterationMeaning
मुझे लगता है कि…mujhe lagtā hai ki…I think that…
मेरे ख़याल से…mere xayāl se…in my opinion…
मेरे विचार में…mere vicār meṁ…in my view…
मेरा मानना है कि…merā mānnā hai ki…I believe that…
मैं सहमत हूँmaiṁ sahmat hūṁI agree
मैं सहमत नहीं हूँmaiṁ sahmat nahīṁ hūṁI disagree
मेरे हिसाब से…mere hisāb se…by my reckoning…
  • मुझे लगता है कि गृहकार्य ज़रूरी है। (Mujhe lagtā hai ki gṛhakārya zarūrī hai. — I think homework is necessary.)
  • मेरे ख़याल से गणित सबसे रोचक विषय है। (Mere xayāl se gaṇit sabse rocak viṣay hai. — In my opinion maths is the most interesting subject.)
  • मैं आपसे सहमत हूँ। (Maiṁ āpse sahmat hūṁ. — I agree with you — polite.)
  • मेरा मानना है कि खेल भी पढ़ाई जितना ज़रूरी है। (Merā mānnā hai ki khel bhī paṛhāī jitnā zarūrī hai. — I believe games are as important as studies.)

Watch लगता: मुझे लगता है is a fixed frame — लगता never agrees with you, it agrees with an invisible "it". But adjectives after it still agree with their own nouns.

Duty and ambition: मुझे + infinitive + है

  • मुझे डॉक्टर बनना है। (Mujhe ḍākṭar bannā hai. — I want to / have to become a doctor.)
  • मुझे आज पढ़ना है। (Mujhe āj paṛhnā hai. — I have to study today.)
  • मुझे यह किताब पढ़नी है। (Mujhe yah kitāb paṛhnī hai. — I have to read this book.) — पढ़नी is feminine because किताब is: the infinitive agrees with the object.
  • मुझे मेहनत करनी चाहिए। (Mujhe mehnat karnī cāhie. — I should work hard.) — करनी agrees with मेहनत (feminine). चाहिए + infinitive = "should"; infinitive + है = "have to / want to".

Dialogue: the careers conversation

  • शिक्षक: तुम बड़े होकर क्या बनना चाहते हो? (Tum baṛe hokar kyā bannā cāhte ho? — What do you want to become when you grow up?)
  • छात्र: मैं वैज्ञानिक बनना चाहता हूँ। (Maiṁ vaigyānik bannā cāhtā hūṁ. — I want to become a scientist.)
  • शिक्षक: क्यों? (Kyõ? — Why?)
  • छात्र: मुझे लगता है कि विज्ञान से हम दुनिया की समस्याएँ हल कर सकते हैं। (Mujhe lagtā hai ki vigyān se ham duniyā kī samasyāeṁ hal kar sakte haiṁ. — I think that through science we can solve the world's problems.)
  • शिक्षक: बहुत अच्छे! तो तुम्हें गणित में मेहनत करनी चाहिए। (Bahut acche! To tumheṁ gaṇit meṁ mehnat karnī cāhie. — Very good! Then you should work hard at maths.)

Check yourself: 1. What does the student want to become? 2. Which opinion frame does he use? 3. What advice does the teacher give? Answers: 1. वैज्ञानिक (vaigyānik, scientist). 2. मुझे लगता है कि… (I think that…). 3. गणित में मेहनत करनी चाहिए (he should work hard at maths).

Pronunciation notes

  • विज्ञान (vigyān) — ज्ञ is "gy": vig-YĀN. वैज्ञानिक (vaigyānik) extends it: vai-gyā-nik.
  • गृहकार्य (gṛhakārya) — गृ is "gṛ" (gri): gṛ-ha-KĀR-ya. Do not say "ghar-kārya".
  • ख़याल (xayāl) — the ख़ throat sound again; मेरे ख़याल से is one flowing chunk.

Common mistakes

  • लगता agreeing with the speaker. Wrong: (a girl) मुझको लगती है कि… Right: मुझे लगता है कि… — the frame is fixed; the gender work happens in the कि clause.
  • Infinitive not agreeing with its object. Wrong: मुझे किताब पढ़ना है। Right: मुझे किताब पढ़नी है। (Mujhe kitāb paṛhnī hai.) किताब is feminine → पढ़नी.
  • बनना with a profession in the wrong shape. Wrong: मैं डॉक्टर होना चाहता हूँ is understandable but stiff. Natural: मैं डॉक्टर बनना चाहता हूँ। (Maiṁ ḍākṭar bannā cāhtā hūṁ. — I want to become a doctor.)
  • चाहिए confused with चाहता. चाहिए = "should/need" (मुझे जाना चाहिए, I should go); चाहता हूँ = "I want" (मैं जाना चाहता हूँ, I want to go). Mixing them swaps duty for desire.
Key idea. Opinions ride on fixed frames — मुझे लगता है कि, मेरे ख़याल से — and duty rides on the infinitive: मुझे + infinitive (agreeing with its object) + है/चाहिए.
Try it. Interview a partner: ask what they want to become and why. They must answer with मुझे लगता है कि and one मुझे … चाहिए sentence. Then swap.

Exam Experience

Reading. Read the school magazine paragraph.

मेरा सपना (Merā sapnā — My dream) मेरा सपना है कि मैं एक अच्छा शिक्षक बनूँ। (Merā sapnā hai ki maiṁ ek acchā śikṣak banūṁ. — My dream is that I become a good teacher.) मुझे लगता है कि शिक्षक ही समाज की नींव हैं। (Mujhe lagtā hai ki śikṣak hī samāj kī nīṁv haiṁ. — I think teachers are the very foundation of society.) मेरे गाँव में अच्छे शिक्षक कम हैं। (Mere gāṁv meṁ acche śikṣak kam haiṁ. — In my village there are few good teachers.) इसलिए मुझे ख़ूब पढ़ना है और मेहनत करनी है। (Isliye mujhe xūb paṛhnā hai aur mehnat karnī hai. — That is why I have to study a lot and work hard.) एक दिन मैं अपने गाँव के बच्चों को पढ़ाऊँगा। (Ek din maiṁ apne gāṁv ke baccoṁ ko paṛhāūṁgā. — One day I will teach the children of my village.)

1. What is the writer's dream? 2. Why does he choose this path (two reasons)? 3. Find one मुझे + infinitive sentence. Answer key: 1. एक अच्छा शिक्षक बनना (to become a good teacher). 2. शिक्षक समाज की नींव हैं (teachers are society's foundation) and his village has few good teachers (गाँव में अच्छे शिक्षक कम हैं). 3. मुझे ख़ूब पढ़ना है (I have to study a lot) — also मेहनत करनी है.

Multiple choice. 1. "I think that exams are hard" is: (a) मुझे लगता है कि परीक्षाएँ कठिन हैं (b) मैं लगता हूँ कि… (c) मुझे लगती है कि… (d) मेरे लगता है कि… — Answer: (a). 2. मुझे यह पत्र … है (पत्र masculine): (a) लिखनी (b) लिखना (c) लिखने (d) लिखनीं — Answer: (b). पत्र is masculine → लिखना. 3. "I agree with you" (polite) is: (a) मैं तुमसे सहमत है (b) मैं आपसे सहमत हूँ (c) मुझे सहमत है (d) मैं आपसे सहमत हो — Answer: (b).

Guided writing. Write an opinion paragraph (5–6 sentences): "मेरा प्रिय विषय" (my favourite subject) — name it, say why with मुझे लगता है कि, compare it with one other subject, and end with a future ambition. Model answer: मेरा प्रिय विषय विज्ञान है। (Merā priya viṣay vigyān hai. — My favourite subject is science.) मुझे लगता है कि विज्ञान हमें दुनिया को समझने में मदद करता है। (Mujhe lagtā hai ki vigyān hameṁ duniyā ko samajhne meṁ madad kartā hai. — I think science helps us understand the world.) मेरे ख़याल से विज्ञान इतिहास से ज़्यादा रोचक है। (Mere xayāl se vigyān itihās se zyādā rocak hai. — In my opinion science is more interesting than history.) मुझे प्रयोगशाला में प्रयोग करना बहुत पसंद है। (Mujhe prayogśālā meṁ prayog karnā bahut pasand hai. — I love doing experiments in the laboratory.) बड़े होकर मैं वैज्ञानिक बनना चाहता हूँ। (Baṛe hokar maiṁ vaigyānik bannā cāhtā hūṁ. — When I grow up I want to become a scientist.) इसलिए मुझे गणित और विज्ञान में मेहनत करनी चाहिए। (Isliye mujhe gaṇit aur vigyān meṁ mehnat karnī cāhie. — That is why I should work hard at maths and science.) Marking notes: One mark per sentence. The opinion frame must be complete (मुझे लगता है कि + a full clause) for its mark. The comparison earns its mark only with से. करनी/पढ़नी-type agreement with a feminine object is credited; the fixed लगता frame left intact is required for full marks.

Going deeper: a real debate, and the language of ambition

The motion: क्या गृहकार्य होना चाहिए? (Should homework exist?) Watch the opinion frames do combat:

  • पक्ष (for): मेरे ख़याल से गृहकार्य ज़रूरी है, क्योंकि अभ्यास से ही पाठ पक्का होता है। (Mere xayāl se gṛhakārya zarūrī hai, kyõki abhyās se hī pāṭh pakkā hotā hai. — In my opinion homework is necessary, because only practice makes a lesson firm.)
  • विपक्ष (against): मैं सहमत नहीं हूँ। मुझे लगता है कि बच्चों को खेलने का समय भी चाहिए। (Maiṁ sahmat nahīṁ hūṁ. Mujhe lagtā hai ki baccoṁ ko khelne kā samay bhī cāhie. — I disagree. I think children also need time to play.)
  • पक्ष: फिर भी, बिना गृहकार्य के छात्र भूल जाते हैं। (Phir bhī, binā gṛhakārya ke chātra bhūl jāte haiṁ. — Even so, without homework students forget.)
  • विपक्ष: दूसरी ओर, कम गृहकार्य भी काम कर सकता है। (Dūsrī or, kam gṛhakārya bhī kām kar saktā hai. — On the other hand, less homework can also work.)
  • निष्कर्ष (conclusion): शायद दोनों बातें सच हैं — गृहकार्य हो, पर सीमित हो। (Śāyad donoṁ bāteṁ sac haiṁ — gṛhakārya ho, par sīmīt ho. — Perhaps both things are true — let there be homework, but limited.) — हो here is pure subjunctive doing debate duty.

Ambition bank — four sentences to steal for your own life:

  • मेरा सपना है कि मैं एक दिन अपना स्कूल खोलूँ। (Merā sapnā hai ki maiṁ ek din apnā skūl kholūṁ. — My dream is that one day I may open my own school.)
  • मुझे इसके लिए ख़ूब पढ़ना है। (Mujhe iske lie xūb paṛhnā hai. — For this I have to study a lot.)
  • मेरे विचार में सफलता का रहस्य नियमित अभ्यास है। (Mere vicār meṁ saphaltā kā rahasya niyamit abhyās hai. — In my view the secret of success is regular practice.)
  • मैं अपने माता-पिता का नाम रोशन करना चाहता हूँ। (Maiṁ apne mātā-pitā kā nām rośan karnā cāhtā hūṁ. — I want to bring honour to my parents' name — i.e., make them proud.) — मुझे अपने माता-पिता पर गर्व है। (Mujhe apne mātā-pitā par garv hai. — I am proud of my parents.)
Try it. Hold the homework debate with a partner: three speeches each, one opinion frame per speech, and end by agreeing on a shared निष्कर्ष line — in Hindi, out loud.
