Lesson 15: School, Work & Opinions — શાળા, કામ અને મંતવ્યો

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

School and work fill most of waking life, and opinions fill the rest. This lesson equips you for all three: the vocabulary of the classroom and the office, and then — the part learners beg for — the opinion phrases: *I think that…, in my opinion, I agree, I don't think so.* Opinions in Gujarati are built around one beautiful construction: મને લાગે છે કે… (manē lāgē chē kē… — "it seems to me that…"), the softener that lets you disagree without declaring war.

Key idea. Key idea. State opinions with મને લાગે છે કે (manē lāgē chē kē — I think that / it seems to me that), agree with હું સંમત છું (huṁ sammat chhuṁ — I agree), and keep the કે (kē, that) clause in Gujarati order — verb last, even inside the opinion.

Opinions at work

  • મને લાગે છે કે આ પુસ્તક ખૂબ સારું છે. (manē lāgē chē kē ā pustak khūb sāruṁ chē.) — I think this book is very good.
  • મારા મતે ગૃહકાર્ય જરૂરી છે. (mārā matē gṛhakārya jarūrī chē.) — In my opinion, homework is necessary.
  • હું સંમત છું — પરીક્ષા નજીક છે. (huṁ sammat chhuṁ — parīkṣā najīk chē.) — I agree — the exam is near.
  • મને એવું નથી લાગતું; આ પ્રશ્ન સહેલો નથી. (manē ēvuṁ nathī lāgtuṁ; ā praśna sahēlō nathī.) — I don't think so; this question is not easy.
  • કદાચ શિક્ષક કાલે રજા આપશે. (kadāch śikṣak kālē rajā āpśē.) — Perhaps the teacher will give a holiday tomorrow.
  • ખરેખર, મહેનત વિના સફળતા નથી. (kharēkhar, mahēnat vinā saphaḷatā nathī.) — Truly, there is no success without hard work.

Notice inside the કે clause the verb still comes last: મને લાગે છે કે તે કાલે આવશે — the "that" clause is a full Gujarati sentence wearing a કે in front.

Dialogue: in the classroom

  • શિક્ષક: આ પ્રશ્નનો જવાબ કોણ આપશે? (śikṣak: ā praśnanō javāb kōṇ āpśē?) — Teacher: Who will answer this question?
  • સીતા: મને લાગે છે કે જવાબ "બે" છે. (Sītā: manē lāgē chē kē javāb "bē" chē.) — Sita: I think the answer is "two".
  • શિક્ષક: બરાબર! અને કબીર, તું સંમત છે? (śikṣak: barābar! anē Kabīr, tuṁ sammat chē?) — Teacher: Correct! And Kabir, do you agree?
  • કબીર: હા, હું સંમત છું. પણ આ પ્રશ્ન અઘરો હતો. (Kabīr: hā, huṁ sammat chhuṁ. paṇ ā praśna agharō hatō.) — Kabir: Yes, I agree. But this question was difficult.

Questions. 1) What does Sita think the answer is? 2) Does Kabir agree? 3) What did Kabir find difficult?

Answer key. 1) "Two" — બે (bē). 2) Yes — હું સંમત છું (huṁ sammat chhuṁ). 3) The question — પ્રશ્ન અઘરો હતો (praśna agharō hatō). (બરાબર (barābar) = correct, exactly — the teacher's favourite word.)

Pronunciation focus

  • લાગે છે (lāgē chē) — the whole opinion system rides on this phrase; pronounce it as one smooth unit "lā-gē-chē", with the long ā open.
  • સંમત (sammat, agreed) — the anusvāra hums before મ: "sam-mat" with a nasal bridge. Dropping the hum produces *સમત, a non-word.
  • ગૃહકાર્ય (gṛhakārya, homework) — ઋ here is "ru": gṛu-ha-kār-ya. Sanskrit-borrowed school words keep their ઋ — do not read it as "ri" the English way, "gru" is the local sound.

Common mistakes

  • મને લાગે છે without કે. Wrong: *મને લાગે છે તે આવશે. Right: મને લાગે છે કે તે આવશે — the કે is the hinge of the clause; without it the sentence falls apart.
  • English order inside the કે clause. Wrong: *મને લાગે છે કે છે આ પુસ્તક સારું (copying "that is this book good"). Right: મને લાગે છે કે આ પુસ્તક સારું છે — verb last, always, even inside opinions.
  • હું સંમત છે. Wrong: *I agree built with છે. Right: હું સંમત છું — first person takes છું, as always.
  • મારા મતે word order. મારા મતે (mārā matē) opens the sentence; it does not trail after it English-style. Open with it, then state the claim.
Try it. Try it. Give your opinion, in full sentences, on four topics: homework, exams, mobile phones in class, and learning Gujarati — once with મને લાગે છે કે, once with મારા મતે, once agreeing (હું સંમત છું) and once politely disagreeing (મને એવું નથી લાગતું).

Exam Experience

Reading task. Read and answer in English.

મારા મતે શાળા જીવનનો સૌથી સારો ભાગ છે. (mārā matē śāḷā jīvannō sauthī sārō bhāg chē.) — In my opinion, school is the best part of life. શાળામાં અમે નવું શીખીએ છીએ અને મિત્રો મળે છે. (śāḷāmāṁ amē navuṁ śīkhīē chhīē anē mitrō maḷē chē.) — In school we learn new things and friends are found. મને લાગે છે કે ગૃહકાર્ય જરૂરી છે, પણ કદાચ થોડું ઓછું હોય તો સારું. (manē lāgē chē kē gṛhakārya jarūrī chē, paṇ kadāch thōḍuṁ ōchhuṁ hōy tō sāruṁ.) — I think homework is necessary, but perhaps it would be better if there were a little less. ખરેખર, સારા શિક્ષક જીવન બદલે છે. (kharēkhar, sārā śikṣak jīvan badalē chē.) — Truly, a good teacher changes a life.

1) What does the writer think school is? 2) Name two things school gives. 3) What is the writer's view of homework?

Answer key. 1) The best part of life — જીવનનો સૌથી સારો ભાગ. 2) New learning (નવું શીખીએ છીએ) and friends (મિત્રો મળે છે). 3) Necessary, but a little less would be better — જરૂરી છે, પણ … થોડું ઓછું હોય તો સારું.

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

1) "I think that…" is… A) મને ખબર છે B) મને લાગે છે કે C) મારું નામ છે D) મને ગમે છે 2) હું સંમત નથી means… A) I agree B) I don't understand C) I disagree D) I don't know 3) ગૃહકાર્ય (gṛhakārya) means… A) housework B) homework C) handwriting D) holiday

Answer key with explanations. 1) B — લાગે છે કે is the opinion frame; ગમે છે is "like" and ખબર છે is "know". 2) C — સંમત નથી = not agreed: I disagree. 3) B — ગૃહકાર્ય is homework (schoolwork for home); રજા is a holiday.

Writing task. Write a short opinion paragraph (4–5 sentences) on "my favourite subject" or "homework": open with મારા મતે or મને લાગે છે કે, give one reason with કારણ કે, and finish with a conclusion using ખરેખર or જરૂર.

Model answer. મારા મતે મારો પ્રિય વિષય ગુજરાતી છે. (mārā matē mārō priya viṣay Gujarātī chē.) — In my opinion, my favourite subject is Gujarati. મને લાગે છે કે ગુજરાતી સુંદર ભાષા છે. (manē lāgē chē kē Gujarātī sundar bhāṣā chē.) — I think Gujarati is a beautiful language. હું ગુજરાતી શીખું છું, કારણ કે મારો પરિવાર ગુજરાતી બોલે છે. (huṁ Gujarātī śīkhuṁ chhuṁ, kāraṇ kē mārō parivār Gujarātī bōlē chē.) — I am learning Gujarati because my family speaks Gujarati. ખરેખર, ભાષા શીખવી એ આનંદ છે. (kharēkhar, bhāṣā śīkhvī ē ānand chē.) — Truly, learning a language is a joy.

Marking notes. One mark per sentence. The opener must be a genuine opinion frame (મારા મતે / મને લાગે છે કે with its કે clause intact and verb-last inside it); કારણ કે must follow its result clause; deduct for English order anywhere.

A closing discussion, classroom-style:

  • શિક્ષક: તમારા મતે સૌથી અગત્યનો વિષય કયો છે? (śikṣak: tamārā matē sauthī agatyanō viṣay kayō chē?) — Teacher: In your opinion, which is the most important subject?
  • વિદ્યાર્થી: મારા મતે ગણિત અગત્યનું છે, કારણ કે તે રોજના જીવનમાં કામ આવે છે. (vidyārthī: mārā matē gaṇit agatyanuṁ chē, kāraṇ kē tē rōjnā jīvanmāṁ kām āvē chē.) — Student: In my opinion maths is important, because it is useful in daily life.
  • શિક્ષક: અને ભાષા? (śikṣak: anē bhāṣā?) — Teacher: And language?
  • વિદ્યાર્થી: હું સંમત છું કે ભાષા પણ જરૂરી છે — ભાષા વિના વિચાર અધૂરો છે. (vidyārthī: huṁ sammat chhuṁ kē bhāṣā paṇ jarūrī chē — bhāṣā vinā vichār adhūrō chē.) — Student: I agree that language is also necessary — without language, thought is incomplete.

Notice how every opinion lands on the Lesson 15 frames — મતે (opinion), કારણ કે (reason), સંમત (agreement), વિના (without) — and how natural they already feel.

Final drill: opinion, upgraded

Take one plain opinion and improve it three times — this is the lesson's whole ladder in one exercise:

  • Plain: પરીક્ષા સારી છે. (parīkṣā sārī chē.) — Exams are good.
  • Framed: મને લાગે છે કે પરીક્ષા સારી છે. (manē lāgē chē kē parīkṣā sārī chē.) — I think exams are good.
  • Reasoned: મને લાગે છે કે પરીક્ષા સારી છે, કારણ કે તે મહેનત શીખવે છે. (manē lāgē chē kē parīkṣā sārī chē, kāraṇ kē tē mahēnat śīkhavē chē.) — I think exams are good, because they teach hard work.
  • Balanced: મારા મતે પરીક્ષા જરૂરી છે; બીજી બાજુ, તે ક્યારેક ભારે પડે છે. (mārā matē parīkṣā jarūrī chē; bījī bāju, tē kyārēk bhārē paḍē chē.) — In my opinion exams are necessary; on the other hand, they are sometimes burdensome.

Four sentences, four levels of sophistication — and every added piece is a phrase from this lesson or a linker from Lesson 10. Fluency is mostly this: not new words, but old ones arranged with better manners.
