Lesson 8: Adjectives, Comparatives & Adverbs

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Adjectives are the colour of a sentence — and in Gujarati they come in two kinds: those that change with the noun and those that never change. This lesson handles the changing kind (મોટો, નાનો, સારો), builds comparisons — bigger, the biggest — and finishes with adverbs, the words that dress the verb. By the end you will be able to do the most human of language tasks: compare two cities, two brothers and two cups of tea, and argue about which is better.

Key idea. Key idea. Comparatives need two ingredients: the marker થી (thī, than) on the thing compared against, and વધારે (vadhārē, more) or ઓછું (ōchhuṁ, less) before the adjective. Superlatives swap વધારે for સૌથી (sauthī, of all): સૌથી મોટો — the biggest.

Adjectives: a quick refresher with more colours

Changing adjectives agree in gender and number, exactly as in Lesson 4. Invariable adjectives — સુંદર (sundar, beautiful), ખરાબ (kharāb, bad), સાફ (sāf, clean), તૈયાર (taiyār, ready) — never change; do not force endings onto them.

Comparatives: X is bigger than Y

Formula: Y-થી વધારે + adjective + છે, where the adjective agrees with X, the subject.

  • રામ શ્યામથી વધારે ઊંચો છે. (Rām Śyāmthī vadhārē ūṁchō chē.) — Ram is taller than Shyam.
  • આ શેરી તે શેરીથી વધારે પહોળી છે. (ā śērī tē śērīthī vadhārē pahōḷī chē.) — This street is wider than that street. (પહોળી feminine — શેરી is feminine.)
  • મારું ઘર તમારા ઘરથી વધારે નાનું છે. (māruṁ ghar tamārā gharthī vadhārē nānuṁ chē.) — My house is smaller than your house. (નાનું neuter — ઘર is neuter.)
  • આ પુસ્તક તે પુસ્તકથી ઓછું જાડું છે. (ā pustak tē pustakthī ōchhuṁ jāḍuṁ chē.) — This book is less thick than that book.

In relaxed speech, વધારે is often dropped when the adjective itself does the work: રામ શ્યામથી ઊંચો છે is heard everywhere. Keep વધારે in careful writing and exams — it makes the comparison unmistakable.

Superlatives: the biggest of all

Formula: સૌથી + adjective — and again the adjective agrees with its noun.

  • રામ વર્ગમાં સૌથી ઊંચો છે. (Rām vargamāṁ sauthī ūṁchō chē.) — Ram is the tallest in the class.
  • આ સૌથી મોટું શહેર છે. (ā sauthī mōṭuṁ śahēr chē.) — This is the biggest city.
  • તે સૌથી સારી વિદ્યાર્થી છે. (tē sauthī sārī vidyārthī chē.) — She is the best student.

Adverbs: how, where, when

Most adverbs are invariable — one less agreement to worry about. Many are adjectives' cousins with -એ or -થી attached: ધીમે (dhīmē, slowly), ધીમેથી (dhīmēthī, slowly, gently), ઝડપથી (jhaḍapthī, quickly), કાળજીથી (kāḷajīthī, carefully).

Dialogue: two cities

  • અમદાવાદ મોટું છે કે વડોદરા? (Amdāvād mōṭuṁ chē kē Vaḍōdarā?) — Is Ahmedabad bigger, or Vadodara?
  • અમદાવાદ વડોદરાથી વધારે મોટું છે. (Amdāvād Vaḍōdarāthī vadhārē mōṭuṁ chē.) — Ahmedabad is bigger than Vadodara.
  • પણ વડોદરા વધારે શાંત છે. (paṇ Vaḍōdarā vadhārē śānt chē.) — But Vadodara is more peaceful.
  • ગુજરાતમાં સૌથી મોટું શહેર કયું છે? (Gujarātmāṁ sauthī mōṭuṁ śahēr kayuṁ chē?) — Which is the biggest city in Gujarat?
  • સૌથી મોટું શહેર અમદાવાદ છે. (sauthī mōṭuṁ śahēr Amdāvād chē.) — The biggest city is Ahmedabad.

Questions. 1) Which city is bigger? 2) What is Vadodara more of? 3) Which is the biggest city in Gujarat?

Answer key. 1) Ahmedabad — વધારે મોટું (vadhārē mōṭuṁ). 2) More peaceful — વધારે શાંત (vadhārē śānt). 3) Ahmedabad — સૌથી મોટું શહેર (sauthī mōṭuṁ śahēr).

Pronunciation focus

  • વધારે (vadhārē) is three beats: va-dhā-rē. Learners squash it into "vadhre" — keep the long ā open.
  • થી (thī) in comparisons sticks to the noun before it: શ્યામથી (Śyāmthī) is spoken as one word. Do not pause before it, or listeners will hear a "from" phrase instead.
  • સૌથી (sauthī) — the diphthong ઔ sounds like "ow" in "how": "sow-thī", not "sō-thī".

Common mistakes

  • થી without a comparison word. Wrong: *રામ શ્યામથી ઊંચો છે said in careful writing is common in speech but sloppy on paper. Right (written standard): રામ શ્યામથી વધારે ઊંચો છે.
  • Adjective agreeing with the wrong noun. Wrong: *શેરી રસ્તાથી વધારે પહોળો છે. Right: શેરી … પહોળી છે — the adjective belongs to શેરી (the subject), not to the noun after થી.
  • સૌથી with થી. Wrong: *બધાથી સૌથી મોટો. Right: સૌથી મોટો stands alone; if you name the group, put it in માં: વર્ગમાં સૌથી મોટો.
  • Forcing endings on invariable adjectives. Wrong: *સુંદરો છોકરો / *સુંદરી છોકરી. Right: સુંદર છોકરો, સુંદર છોકરી — સુંદર never changes.
Try it. Try it. Compare three pairs aloud: two people (height), two objects (size), two foods (taste) — one વધારે sentence and one ઓછું sentence each — then crown one winner with સૌથી.

Exam Experience

Reading task. Read and answer in English.

મારો ભાઈ મારાથી વધારે ઊંચો છે, પણ હું તેનાથી વધારે ઝડપથી દોડું છું. (mārō bhāī mārāthī vadhārē ūṁchō chē, paṇ huṁ tēnāthī vadhārē jhaḍapthī dōḍuṁ chhuṁ.) — My brother is taller than me, but I run faster than him. વર્ગમાં સૌથી સારો વિદ્યાર્થી અર્જુન છે. (vargamāṁ sauthī sārō vidyārthī Arjun chē.) — Arjun is the best student in the class. આજે ગઈ કાલથી વધારે ઠંડી છે. (ājē gaī kālthī vadhārē ṭhaṇḍī chē.) — Today is colder than yesterday.

1) Who is taller, the speaker or the brother? 2) Who runs faster? 3) Who is the best student? 4) Is today hotter or colder than yesterday?

Answer key. 1) The brother — મારો ભાઈ … વધારે ઊંચો. 2) The speaker — હું તેનાથી વધારે ઝડપથી દોડું છું. 3) Arjun — સૌથી સારો વિદ્યાર્થી. 4) Colder — વધારે ઠંડી.

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

1) "This street is wider than that street" is… A) આ શેરી તે શેરીથી વધારે પહોળો છે B) આ શેરી તે શેરીથી વધારે પહોળી છે C) આ શેરી તે શેરી વધારે પહોળી છે D) આ શેરી સૌથી પહોળી છે 2) સૌથી (sauthī) means… A) more B) less C) of all / the most D) very 3) Which adverb means "always"? A) ક્યારેક (kyārēk) B) હંમેશા (hammēśā) C) ધીમે (dhīmē) D) ત્યાં (tyāṁ)

Answer key with explanations. 1) B — શેરી is feminine, so પહોળી, and the comparison needs થી on તે શેરી. A has the masculine adjective; D makes a superlative instead. 2) C — સૌથી marks the superlative; વધારે is "more". 3) B — હંમેશા, always; ક્યારેક is sometimes.

Writing task. Write four sentences comparing your town or school with another: two with વધારે/ઓછું and થી, one superlative with સૌથી, one with an adverb from this lesson.

Model answer. મારું શહેર મુંબઈથી ઓછું મોટું છે. (māruṁ śahēr Mumbaīthī ōchhuṁ mōṭuṁ chē.) — My city is less big than Mumbai. પણ અહીં જીવન વધારે શાંત છે. (paṇ ahīṁ jīvan vadhārē śānt chē.) — But life here is more peaceful. મારી શાળા શહેરમાં સૌથી સારી છે. (mārī śāḷā śahērmāṁ sauthī sārī chē.) — My school is the best in the city. હું રોજ શાળાએ ઝડપથી જાઉં છું. (huṁ rōj śāḷāē jhaḍapthī jāuṁ chhuṁ.) — I go to school quickly every day.

Marking notes. One mark per sentence. The comparative sentences need all three parts: થી on the compared noun, વધારે/ઓછું, and an adjective agreeing with the subject. Deduct when the adjective copies the noun after થી instead.

Going deeper: comparing quantities and kinds

Comparatives work for amounts too — with વધારે (more) and ઓછું (less) standing before the noun itself:

  • આ બોક્સ તે બોક્સથી વધારે ભારે છે. (ā bōks tē bōksthī vadhārē bhārē chē.) — This box is heavier than that box.
  • મને વધારે પાણી આપો. (manē vadhārē pāṇī āpō.) — Give me more water.
  • આજે ગઈ કાલથી ઓછી ગરમી છે. (ājē gaī kālthī ōchhī garmī chē.) — Today there is less heat than yesterday.
  • નદી અહીં ઊંડી છે. (nadī ahīṁ ūṇḍī chē.) — The river is deep here. (ઊંડી feminine — નદી)
  • આ રસ્તો તે રસ્તાથી વધારે સાંકડો છે. (ā rastō tē rastāthī vadhārē sāṁkaḍō chē.) — This road is narrower than that road.

For "too much" and "enough", Gujarati uses ખૂબ (khūb, very/a lot) before adjectives — ખૂબ મોંઘું (very expensive) — and પૂરતું (pūrtuṁ, enough): આટલું પૂરતું છે (āṭluṁ pūrtuṁ chē) — this much is enough. Keep ખૂબ in the adverb slot and પૂરતું after the amount, and quantities will behave.

Final drill: the comparison ladder

Climb one ladder slowly, watching the adjective agree at every rung. The noun is નદી (nadī, river — feminine):

  • આ નદી લાંબી છે. (ā nadī lāṁbī chē.) — This river is long.
  • આ નદી તે નદીથી વધારે લાંબી છે. (ā nadī tē nadīthī vadhārē lāṁbī chē.) — This river is longer than that river.
  • આ ગુજરાતની સૌથી લાંબી નદી છે. (ā Gujarātnī sauthī lāṁbī nadī chē.) — This is Gujarat's longest river. (It is the નર્મદા, Narmadā — the river Narmad the poet was named for.)

Now the same ladder with a masculine noun, પુલ (pul, bridge):

  • આ પુલ લાંબો છે. (ā pul lāṁbō chē.) — This bridge is long.
  • આ પુલ તે પુલથી વધારે લાંબો છે. (ā pul tē pulthī vadhārē lāṁbō chē.) — This bridge is longer than that bridge.
  • આ સૌથી લાંબો પુલ છે. (ā sauthī lāṁbō pul chē.) — This is the longest bridge.

The adjective changed (લાંબી → લાંબો) because the noun did; the comparison machinery (થી, વધારે, સૌથી) never blinked. Machinery fixed, agreement flexible — that is the whole lesson in one ladder.
