Lesson 10: Complex Sentences — કારણ કે, જો, જ્યારે…ત્યારે, જે…તે
🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.
Single sentences can only say so much. Real language links them: *because, if, when, the one who…* Gujarati links clauses with a set of elegant tools — some familiar from English (કારણ કે, because), and one that English does not have at all: the correlative pair, where a clause beginning with જે (jē, who/which) is answered by a matching તે (tē, that/he) in the main clause, like two ends of a bridge. Learn these linkers and your Gujarati grows from telegrams into thought.
The linker toolbox
| Linker | Transliteration | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| કારણ કે | kāraṇ kē | because | તે ન આવ્યો, કારણ કે વરસાદ હતો (tē na āvyō, kāraṇ kē varsād hatō) | he did not come, because it was raining |
| એટલે | ēṭlē | so, therefore | વરસાદ હતો, એટલે તે ન આવ્યો (varsād hatō, ēṭlē tē na āvyō) | it was raining, so he did not come |
| પણ / પરંતુ | paṇ / parantu | but | તે ગરીબ છે, પણ ખુશ છે (tē garīb chē, paṇ khuś chē) | he is poor, but he is happy |
| જો…તો | jō…tō | if…then | જો વરસાદ પડશે તો અમે ઘરે રહીશું (jō varsād paḍśē tō amē gharē rahīśuṁ) | if it rains, we will stay home |
| જ્યારે…ત્યારે | jyārē…tyārē | when…then | જ્યારે હું આવ્યો ત્યારે તે વાંચતો હતો (jyārē huṁ āvyō tyārē tē vāṁchtō hatō) | when I came, he was reading |
| જે…તે | jē…tē | who/which…that | જે વિદ્યાર્થી વાંચે છે તે પાસ થાય છે (jē vidyārthī vāṁchē chē tē pās thāy chē) | the student who studies, passes |
| કે | kē | that (after say/know/think) | મને ખબર છે કે તે આવશે (manē khabar chē kē tē āvśē) | I know that he will come |
| જેમ…તેમ | jēm…tēm | as…so | જેમ કરશો તેમ ભરશો (jēm karśō tēm bharśō) | as you do, so shall you reap |
કારણ કે versus એટલે: cause before or after?
Both link a cause and a result; they differ in direction. કારણ કે puts the reason second (result, because reason) and can also start a sentence that answers "why?". એટલે ("that is why") puts the result second (reason, so result). Compare the table's first two rows: same rain, same absence — opposite order. One more tool for the same job: the postposition -ને લીધે (nē līdhē, because of): વરસાદને લીધે તે ન આવ્યો (varsādnē līdhē tē na āvyō) — because of the rain, he did not come.
જો…તો (if…then)
The જો clause states the condition; the તો clause states the consequence, and તો — a small word that also means "then/so" in conversation — must not be left out in writing.
- જો તું વાંચીશ, તો તું પાસ થઈશ. (jō tuṁ vāṁchīś, tō tuṁ pās thaīś.) — If you study, you will pass.
- જો ગાડી મોડી થશે, તો અમે બસથી જઈશું. (jō gāḍī mōḍī thaśē, tō amē basthī jaīśuṁ.) — If the train is late, we will go by bus.
- જો પૈસા હશે, તો હું પુસ્તક ખરીદીશ. (jō paisā haśē, tō huṁ pustak kharīdīś.) — If there is money, I will buy the book.
(Lesson 16 returns to જો for wishes and unreal conditions, where the verb changes mood.)
જ્યારે…ત્યારે and the correlative જે…તે
જ્યારે…ત્યારે works like a pair of brackets around two events pinned to the same moment: જ્યારે શિક્ષક આવ્યા, ત્યારે બાળકો બેઠાં (jyārē śikṣak āvyā, tyārē bāḷakō bēṭhāṁ) — when the teacher came, the children sat down.
The જે…તે pair is Gujarati's answer to English relative clauses, but the bridge runs the other way: the જે-clause comes first, and તે in the main clause points back at it:
- જે માણસ મહેનત કરે છે, તે સફળ થાય છે. (jē māṇas mahēnat karē chē, tē saphaḷ thāy chē.) — The man who works hard, succeeds. (literally: which man works hard, that one succeeds)
- જે પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે, તે મારું છે. (jē pustak ṭebal par chē, tē māruṁ chē.) — The book that is on the table is mine.
- જ્યાં પાણી છે, ત્યાં જીવન છે. (jyāṁ pāṇī chē, tyāṁ jīvan chē.) — Where there is water, there is life. (જ્યાં…ત્યાં, where…there — the place cousin of the pair.)
English-trained brains want to say "the book that is on the table…" by putting the relative clause after the noun with no તે. Resist: build the જે-bridge, then land on તે.
Sentences: a short story with linkers
એક ગામમાં એક ખેડૂત રહેતો હતો. જ્યારે વરસાદ ન પડ્યો, ત્યારે ખેતર સુકાઈ ગયું. (ēk gāmmāṁ ēk khēḍūt rahētō hatō. jyārē varsād na paḍyō, tyārē khētar sukāī gayuṁ.) — A farmer lived in a village. When the rain did not fall, the field dried up. ખેડૂતે કહ્યું, "જો હું મહેનત કરીશ, તો પાણી મળશે." (khēḍūtē kahyuṁ, "jō huṁ mahēnat karīś, tō pāṇī maḷśē.") — The farmer said, "If I work hard, water will be found." જે મહેનત કરે છે, તેને ફળ મળે છે. (jē mahēnat karē chē, tēnē phaḷ maḷē chē.) — The one who works hard, receives the fruit (reward).
Questions. 1) Why did the field dry up? 2) What did the farmer promise himself? 3) What does the last line teach?
Answer key. 1) Because the rain did not fall — જ્યારે વરસાદ ન પડ્યો (jyārē varsād na paḍyō). 2) That if he works hard, water will be found — જો હું મહેનત કરીશ, તો પાણી મળશે. 3) Hard work brings its reward: જે મહેનત કરે છે, તેને ફળ મળે છે.
Pronunciation focus
- કારણ કે (kāraṇ kē) — keep the retroflex ણ crisp: "kā-raṇ", not "kā-ran". The flat English "n" here marks a learner at once.
- જ્યારે (jyārē) is two beats, "jyā-rē", with the જ્ય glide at the start. Do not unpack it into "ja-yā-rē".
- એટલે (ēṭlē) — retroflex ટ again; the word is a full stop in speech, often said with a little falling tone: "…ēṭlē." And so it goes.
Common mistakes
- Dropping તો after જો. Wrong (in careful writing): *જો વરસાદ પડશે અમે ઘરે રહીશું. Right: જો વરસાદ પડશે, તો અમે ઘરે રહીશું — in written Gujarati the તો lands the condition.
- English-style relative clauses. Wrong: *પુસ્તક જે ટેબલ પર છે મારું છે (noun first, જે after, તે nowhere). Right: જે પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે, તે મારું છે — જે first, તે in the main clause.
- કારણ કે at the wrong end. Wrong: *કારણ કે વરસાદ હતો, તે ન આવ્યો (calqued on English "because…" openings work only with તો/એટલે frames). Right: તે ન આવ્યો, કારણ કે વરસાદ હતો — or — વરસાદ હતો, એટલે તે ન આવ્યો.
- કે after every verb. Wrong: *હું જાઉં છું કે શાળાએ. Right: કે follows verbs of saying, knowing and thinking (કહેવું, જાણવું, લાગવું) — હું જાણું છું કે તે આવશે. Plain action sentences take no કે.
Exam Experience
Reading task. Read and answer in English.
સીતા રોજ વહેલી ઊઠે છે, કારણ કે તેને શાળાએ જવું છે. (Sītā rōj vahēlī ūṭhē chē, kāraṇ kē tēnē śāḷāē javuṁ chē.) — Sita gets up early every day, because she has to go to school. જ્યારે તે શાળાએ પહોંચે છે, ત્યારે તેના મિત્રો રાહ જુએ છે. (jyārē tē śāḷāē pahōṁchē chē, tyārē tēnā mitrō rāh juē chē.) — When she reaches school, her friends are waiting. જો પરીક્ષા નજીક હોય, તો સીતા વધારે વાંચે છે. (jō parīkṣā najīk hōy, tō Sītā vadhārē vāṁchē chē.) — If an exam is near, Sita studies more. જે વિદ્યાર્થી સીતા જેમ વાંચે છે, તે સફળ થાય છે. (jē vidyārthī Sītā jēm vāṁchē chē, tē saphaḷ thāy chē.) — The student who studies like Sita, succeeds.
1) Why does Sita get up early? 2) Who waits when she reaches school? 3) What does Sita do when an exam is near?
Answer key. 1) Because she has to go to school — કારણ કે તેને શાળાએ જવું છે. 2) Her friends — તેના મિત્રો (tēnā mitrō). 3) She studies more — વધારે વાંચે છે (vadhārē vāṁchē chē).
Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.
1) "If it rains, we will stay home" needs which pair? A) કારણ કે B) જો…તો C) જે…તે D) એટલે 2) જે પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે, તે મારું છે means… A) my book is on the table B) the book that is on the table is mine C) I read the book on the table D) put the book on the table 3) Which linker means "because"? A) એટલે (ēṭlē) B) પણ (paṇ) C) તો (tō) D) કારણ કે (kāraṇ kē)
Answer key with explanations. 1) B — જો…તો frames a condition and its result. 2) B — the જે…તે bridge: "which book is on the table, that (one) is mine". 3) D — કારણ કે; એટલે points the other way ("so, therefore").
Writing task. Write four linked sentences about your studies: one with કારણ કે, one with જો…તો, one with જ્યારે…ત્યારે, and one with જે…તે.
Model answer. હું રોજ વાંચું છું, કારણ કે મને પાસ થવું છે. (huṁ rōj vāṁchuṁ chhuṁ, kāraṇ kē manē pās thavuṁ chē.) — I study every day, because I want to pass. જો હું મહેનત કરીશ, તો હું સફળ થઈશ. (jō huṁ mahēnat karīś, tō huṁ saphaḷ thaīś.) — If I work hard, I will succeed. જ્યારે શિક્ષક સમજાવે છે, ત્યારે હું ધ્યાનથી સાંભળું છું. (jyārē śikṣak samjāvē chē, tyārē huṁ dhyānthī sāṁbhaḷuṁ chhuṁ.) — When the teacher explains, I listen carefully. જે વિદ્યાર્થી પ્રશ્ન પૂછે છે, તે શીખે છે. (jē vidyārthī praśna pūchhē chē, tē śīkhē chē.) — The student who asks questions, learns.
Marking notes. One mark per sentence. Each linker must be complete: જો without તો, or જે without its answering તે, earns half. Watch that કારણ કે follows the result clause, not precedes it.
Going deeper: until, since and although
Three more linkers round out the set — travellers will use the first daily:
| Linker | Transliteration | Meaning | Example | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| જ્યાં સુધી | jyāṁ sudhī | until, as long as | જ્યાં સુધી વરસાદ છે, ત્યાં સુધી અમે અહીં છીએ (jyāṁ sudhī varsād chē, tyāṁ sudhī amē ahīṁ chhīē) | as long as it rains, we are here |
| ત્યારથી | tyārthī | since then | ત્યારથી તે રોજ વાંચે છે (tyārthī tē rōj vāṁchē chē) | since then he reads daily |
| છતાં | chhatāṁ | although, despite | વરસાદ હતો, છતાં અમે ગયા (varsād hatō, chhatāṁ amē gayā) | although it was raining, we went |
| જેથી | jēthī | so that | તે ધીમે બોલ્યો, જેથી બધા સાંભળે (tē dhīmē bōlyō, jēthī badhā sāṁbhaḷē) | he spoke slowly, so that all might hear |
- જ્યાં સુધી શાળા છે, ત્યાં સુધી હું અહીં રહીશ. (jyāṁ sudhī śāḷā chē, tyāṁ sudhī huṁ ahīṁ rahīś.) — As long as school is on, I will stay here.
- ગરમી હતી, છતાં બાળકો બહાર રમ્યાં. (garmī hatī, chhatāṁ bāḷakō bahār ramyāṁ.) — Although it was hot, the children played outside.
- તેણે પૈસા બચાવ્યા, જેથી તે પુસ્તક ખરીદી શકે. (tēṇē paisā bachāvyā, jēthī tē pustak kharīdī śakē.) — He saved money, so that he could buy the book.
છતાં (chhatāṁ) is the written cousin of પણ — the essay-word for "but/although". You now hold the complete linking kit: cause (કારણ કે, એટલે), condition (જો…તો), time (જ્યારે…ત્યારે, જ્યાં સુધી), relation (જે…તે), concession (છતાં) and purpose (જેથી). Sentences built with these are no longer beginner sentences.
