Lesson 6: Postpositions & the Case System — ને, ને, થી, માં, પર, નો

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

English puts little words *before* nouns — in the house, on the table, to me. Gujarati puts them after: ઘરમાં (gharmāṁ), "house-in". These after-words are postpositions, and together with the case endings they answer the questions where? when? to whom? from where? The good news: Gujarati postpositions do not change form much, nouns barely change before them, and the whole system is smaller than the English preposition jungle. The one postposition that demands attention is નો (nō, "of"), because it behaves like an adjective and agrees with the noun that follows it.

Key idea. Key idea. Postpositions follow the noun: પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે (pustak ṭebal par chē) — "book table on is". Only નો/ની/નું/ના ("of") changes shape, copying the gender and number of the noun after it.

The core postpositions

PostpositionTransliterationMeaningExampleTranslation
માંmāṁin, insideઘરમાં (gharmāṁ)in the house
પરparonટેબલ પર (ṭebal par)on the table
નેnēto; (marks the object)મને (manē)to me
થીthīfrom; by; with (tool)સ્કૂલથી (skūlthī)from school
માટેmāṭēforબાળક માટે (bāḷak māṭē)for the child
સાથેsāthēwith (company)મિત્ર સાથે (mitra sāthē)with a friend
પાસેpāsēnear; in possession ofમારી પાસે (mārī pāsē)with me / I have
સુધીsudhīuntil, up toસાંજ સુધી (sāṁj sudhī)until evening
પછીpachhīafterભોજન પછી (bhōjan pachhī)after the meal
પહેલાંpahēlāṁbeforeશાળા પહેલાં (śāḷā pahēlāṁ)before school
વિશેviśēaboutપુસ્તક વિશે (pustak viśē)about the book
વિનાvināwithoutપાણી વિના (pāṇī vinā)without water

Notice થી's three jobs: from a place (ગામથી, gāmthī, from the village), by a means (બસથી, basthī, by bus), and with a tool (છરીથી, chharīthī, with a knife). Context separates them; one word covers all three.

The special one: નો (of)

"Of" in Gujarati is an adjective, and like every -ઓ adjective it copies the noun after it:

FormUsed beforeExampleTranslation
નો (nō)masculine singularભાઈનો ફોટો (bhāīnō phōṭō)brother's photo
ની (nī)feminineબહેનની ચાવી (bahēnnī chāvī)sister's key
નું (nuṁ)neuterઘરનું બારણું (gharnuṁ bāraṇuṁ)the house's door
ના (nā)plural / respectfulછોકરાઓના પુસ્તકો (chhōkarāōnā pustakō)the boys' books

Read the table sideways: in ભાઈનો ફોટો the નો is masculine because ફોટો is masculine — it agrees with the thing possessed, never with the owner. This is the same rule you met with મારો/મારી/મારું (my), which is really just નો attached to pronouns.

Pronouns in their case forms

Pronouns change shape before postpositions — these fused forms are among the most common words in the language:

BaseTo/for (ને)From/by (થી)My/of (નો-family)
હું (huṁ, I)મને (manē)મારાથી (mārāthī)મારો/મારી/મારું (mārō/mārī/māruṁ)
તું (tuṁ, you-close)તને (tanē)તારાથી (tārāthī)તારો/તારી/તારું
તે (tē, he/she)તેને (tēnē)તેનાથી (tēnāthī)તેનો/તેની/તેનું
અમે (amē, we)અમને (amanē)અમારાથી (amārāthī)અમારો/અમારી/અમારું
તમે (tamē, you-polite)તમને (tamanē)તમારાથી (tamārāthī)તમારો/તમારી/તમારું
તેઓ (tēō, they)તેઓને (tēōnē)તેઓથી (tēōthī)તેઓનો/તેઓની/તેઓનું

ને also marks specific, definite objects — especially people and known things: હું કબીરને જોઉં છું (huṁ Kabīrnē jōuṁ chhuṁ) — I see Kabir. But હું પુસ્તક વાંચું છું (huṁ pustak vāṁchuṁ chhuṁ) — I read a book, with no ને, because the book is indefinite. This double life of ને (to/for + definite object) is the heart of the lesson.

Sentences at work

  • પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે. (pustak ṭebal par chē.) — The book is on the table.
  • બાળક ઘરમાં છે. (bāḷak gharmāṁ chē.) — The child is in the house.
  • મને ચા ગમે છે. (manē chā gamē chē.) — I like tea. (literally: to-me tea pleasing is)
  • મારી પાસે બે પુસ્તકો છે. (mārī pāsē bē pustakō chē.) — I have two books. (literally: near me two books are)
  • તે બસથી શાળાએ જાય છે. (tē basthī śāḷāē jāy chē.) — She goes to school by bus.
  • આ કબીરનું ઘર છે. (ā Kabīrnuṁ ghar chē.) — This is Kabir's house.
  • હું ગામથી આવું છું. (huṁ gāmthī āvuṁ chhuṁ.) — I come from the village.
  • ભોજન પછી અમે વાંચીએ છીએ. (bhōjan pachhī amē vāṁchīē chhīē.) — After the meal we read.

Dialogue: at the station

  • માફ કરશો, ગાડી ક્યારે આવે છે? (māf karśō, gāḍī kyārē āvē chē?) — Excuse me, when does the train come?
  • ગાડી દસ વાગ્યે આવે છે. તમે ક્યાં જાઓ છો? (gāḍī das vāgyē āvē chē. tamē kyāṁ jāō chho?) — The train comes at ten. Where are you going?
  • હું વડોદરા જાઉં છું. ટિકિટ ક્યાં મળે છે? (huṁ Vaḍōdarā jāuṁ chhuṁ. ṭikiṭ kyāṁ maḷē chē?) — I am going to Vadodara. Where do I get a ticket?
  • ટિકિટ બારી પાસે મળે છે. (ṭikiṭ bārī pāsē maḷē chē.) — Tickets are available near the window.

Questions. 1) When does the train come? 2) Where is the traveller going? 3) Where are tickets available?

Answer key. 1) At ten o'clock — દસ વાગ્યે (das vāgyē). 2) To Vadodara — વડોદરા (Vaḍōdarā). 3) Near the window — બારી પાસે (bārī pāsē). (ક્યાં (kyāṁ) = where; ક્યારે (kyārē) = when — keep the pair apart.)

Pronunciation focus

  • માં (māṁ) is a long nasal "aa". ઘરમાં (gharmāṁ) should hum: do not shorten it to "gharma". The anusvāra is the sound.
  • ને (nē) is short and light. In fast speech મને (manē) sounds almost like "m'ne" — one and a half beats, not two heavy ones.
  • પર (par) versus પાર (pār). પર (par) means "on"; પાર (pār) means "across, the far shore". The long ā changes the word entirely — length is meaning, as always.

Common mistakes

  • Putting the postposition first. Wrong: *માં ઘર બાળક છે. Right: બાળક ઘરમાં છે — the postposition follows its noun.
  • Making નો agree with the owner. Wrong: *બહેનનો ચાવી (using masculine નો because… or by copying English "her"). Right: બહેનની ચાવી — ચાવી (key) is feminine, so ની, whoever owns it.
  • Adding ને to every object. Wrong: *હું પુસ્તકને વાંચું છું for an ordinary indefinite book. Right: હું પુસ્તક વાંચું છું; reserve ને for definite, known, or human objects (હું કબીરને જોઉં છું).
  • થી for company. Wrong: *હું મિત્રથી જાઉં છું for "I go with my friend". Right: હું મિત્ર સાથે જાઉં છું — સાથે for companions, થી for tools and means.
Try it. Try it. Describe the room you are in with five sentences: something માં a container, something પર a surface, something પાસે something else, one thing you have (મારી પાસે … છે), and one thing that belongs to someone (…નું/…ની/…નો).

Exam Experience

Reading task. Read and answer in English.

આ મારો બગીચો છે. બગીચામાં મોટું ઝાડ છે. (ā mārō bagīchō chē. bagīchāmāṁ mōṭuṁ jhāḍ chē.) — This is my garden. In the garden there is a big tree. ઝાડ પર પક્ષીઓ છે. ઝાડ નીચે બાળકો રમે છે. (jhāḍ par pakṣīō chē. jhāḍ nīchē bāḷakō ramē chē.) — There are birds on the tree. Children play under the tree. મારી પાસે ફૂલો છે. હું બહેનને ફૂલો આપું છું. (mārī pāsē phūlō chē. huṁ bahēnnē phūlō āpuṁ chhuṁ.) — I have flowers. I give flowers to my sister.

1) Where is the big tree? 2) Who plays under the tree? 3) What does the speaker give, and to whom?

Answer key. 1) In the garden — બગીચામાં (bagīchāmāṁ). 2) Children — બાળકો (bāḷakō). 3) Flowers (ફૂલો, phūlō) to his/her sister — બહેનને (bahēnnē), with ને marking "to".

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

1) "Sister's book" (પુસ્તક is neuter) is… A) બહેનનો પુસ્તક B) બહેનની પુસ્તક C) બહેનનું પુસ્તક D) બહેનના પુસ્તક 2) Which sentence means "The book is on the table"? A) પુસ્તક ટેબલમાં છે B) પુસ્તક ટેબલ પર છે C) પુસ્તક ટેબલથી છે D) પુસ્તક ટેબલને છે 3) મને (manē) means… A) from me B) my C) to me D) with me

Answer key with explanations. 1) C — નું agrees with પુસ્તક (neuter), not with બહેન. 2) B — પર means "on"; માં would put the book inside the table. 3) C — મને is હું + ને: "to me". "From me" is મારાથી, "my" is મારો/મારી/મારું.

Writing task. Write four sentences about a picture you imagine: one with માં, one with પર, one with પાસે, and one using નો/ની/નું correctly.

Model answer. મારા ઘરમાં ત્રણ ઓરડા છે. (mārā gharmāṁ traṇ ōraḍā chē.) — There are three rooms in my house. ટેબલ પર ઘડિયાળ છે. (ṭebal par ghaḍiyāḷ chē.) — There is a clock on the table. ઘર પાસે બગીચો છે. (ghar pāsē bagīchō chē.) — There is a garden near the house. આ મારી બહેનનું પુસ્તક છે. (ā mārī bahēnnuṁ pustak chē.) — This is my sister's book.

Marking notes. One mark per sentence: the postposition must follow its noun, and the નો-form must agree with the following noun. The favourite error is *બહેનનો પુસ્તક — correct it to બહેનનું પુસ્તક and explain why (agreement looks forward, not back).

Going deeper: place words — where exactly?

The postpositions માં and પર locate things roughly; these sharper words locate them exactly. They work like postpositions, following the noun (often with ની/ના attached in careful speech, bare in everyday use):

WordTransliterationMeaningExampleTranslation
અંદરandarinsideબોક્સ અંદર (bōks andar)inside the box
બહારbahāroutsideઘર બહાર (ghar bahār)outside the house
ઉપરuparabove, on topટેબલ ઉપર (ṭebal upar)on top of the table
નીચેnīchēunder, belowઝાડ નીચે (jhāḍ nīchē)under the tree
આગળāgaḷin front; aheadશાળા આગળ (śāḷā āgaḷ)in front of the school
પાછળpāchhaḷbehindઘર પાછળ (ghar pāchhaḷ)behind the house
સામેsāmēopposite, facingદુકાન સામે (dukān sāmē)opposite the shop
વચ્ચેvachchēbetween, in the middleબે ઘર વચ્ચે (bē ghar vachchē)between two houses
  • ચાવી ટેબલ નીચે છે. (chāvī ṭebal nīchē chē.) — The key is under the table.
  • બાળકો શાળા આગળ રમે છે. (bāḷakō śāḷā āgaḷ ramē chē.) — The children play in front of the school.
  • ઘર પાછળ બગીચો છે. (ghar pāchhaḷ bagīchō chē.) — There is a garden behind the house.
  • દુકાન સ્ટેશન સામે છે. (dukān sṭēśan sāmē chē.) — The shop is opposite the station.
  • પુસ્તક બે બોક્સ વચ્ચે છે. (pustak bē bōks vachchē chē.) — The book is between the two boxes.

A word of precision: ઉપર means "on/above (touching or over)", પર means "on" generally; in most sentences both pass. And માં versus અંદર: અંદર insists on *inside-ness* — ઘરમાં (in the house) is normal; કબાટ અંદર (inside the cupboard) is where અંદર earns its place.
