Lesson 15: School, Work & Opinions — స్కూల్, పని మరియు అభిప్రాయాలు
🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.
This lesson arms you for the two places opinions matter most — school (స్కూలు) and work (పని). You will learn the vocabulary of classrooms and offices, and the careful phrases Telugu uses to agree, disagree and give a view without giving offence: opinions in Telugu are offered softly, with నాకు అనిపిస్తుంది (it seems to me) doing the heavy lifting.

Giving and answering opinions
| Telugu | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| నా అభిప్రాయంలో | na abhiprayamlo | in my opinion |
| నేను అనుకుంటున్నాను … అని | nenu anukuntunnanu … ani | I think that … |
| నాకు అనిపిస్తుంది | naku anipistundi | it seems to me |
| నేను పూర్తిగా అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను | nenu purtiga angikaristunnanu | I fully agree |
| నేను విభేదిస్తున్నాను | nenu vibhedistunnanu | I disagree |

| ఉదాహరణకు | udaharanaku | for example |
| చివరగా | chivaraga | finally, in conclusion |
The అని (ani) after a thought — "I think that …" — is Telugu's quotation glue; Lesson 17 will build reported speech on it. For now, treat అనుకుంటున్నాను … అని as one chunk.
Example sentences
- నా అభిప్రాయంలో, ఇంటిపని అవసరం. (Na abhiprayamlo, intipani avasaram. — In my opinion, homework is necessary.)
- నేను అనుకుంటున్నాను, ఆన్లైన్ తరగతులు పూర్తిగా బడిని మార్చలేవని. (Nenu anukuntunnanu, online taragatulu purtiga badini marchalevani. — I think that online classes cannot fully replace school.)
- నాకు అనిపిస్తుంది, ఈ పుస్తకం పరీక్షకి చాలా ఉపయోగం. (Naku anipistundi, i pustakam parikshaki cala upayogam. — It seems to me that this book is very useful for the exam.)
- నేను మీతో పూర్తిగా అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను. (Nenu mito purtiga angikaristunnanu. — I fully agree with you.)
- క్షమించండి, నేను కొంచెం విభేదిస్తున్నాను. (Kshaminchandi, nenu konchem vibhedistunnanu. — Excuse me, I disagree a little.)
- ఒక వైపు, ఫోను చదువుకి ఉపయోగం; మరో వైపు, అది ధ్యాస చెడగొడుతుంది. (Oka vaipu, phonu chaduvuki upayogam; maro vaipu, adi dhyasa chedagodutundi. — On one hand, the phone is useful for study; on the other hand, it spoils concentration.)
- ఉదాహరణకు, నా సహోద్యోగి రోజూ ఇంటి నుంచి పని చేస్తాడు. (Udaharanaku, na sahodyogi roju inti nunchi pani chestadu. — For example, my colleague works from home every day.)
Dialogue: online classes — a friendly disagreement
- సాయి: నా అభిప్రాయంలో, ఆన్లైన్ తరగతులు చాలా మంచివి. మనం ఇంటిలోనే చదువుకోవచ్చు. (Sai: Na abhiprayamlo, online taragatulu cala manchivi. Manam intilone chaduvukovachchu. — In my opinion, online classes are very good. We can study from home itself.)
- రేఖ: నేను కొంచెం విభేదిస్తున్నాను. బడిలో స్నేహితులతో కలిసి నేర్చుకోవడం వేరు. (Rekha: Nenu konchem vibhedistunnanu. Badilo snehitulato kalisi nerchukovadam veru. — I disagree a little. Learning together with friends at school is different.)
- సాయి: అది నిజం. కానీ ఆన్లైన్లో మనం పాఠం మళ్ళీ వినవచ్చు. (Sai: Adi nijam. Kani onlinelo manam patham malli vinavachchu. — That is true. But online we can listen to the lesson again.)
- రేఖ: ఒక వైపు అది మంచిదే. మరో వైపు, కళ్ళు అలసిపోతాయి. (Rekha: Oka vaipu adi manchide. Maro vaipu, kallu alasipotayi. — On one hand that is good. On the other hand, the eyes get tired.)
- సాయి: చివరగా, రెండూ కలిస్తే బాగుంటుంది! (Sai: Chivaraga, rendu kaliste baguntundi! — Finally, if both come together, it will be great!)
Comprehension questions
- 1. What advantage of online classes does Sai give first?
- 2. What is Rekha's main objection?
- 3. What conclusion do they reach together?
Answer key: 1. You can study from home (ఇంటిలోనే చదువుకోవచ్చు). 2. Learning with friends at school is different — and screens tire the eyes (కళ్ళు అలసిపోతాయి). 3. A mixture of both is best (రెండూ కలిస్తే బాగుంటుంది).
Pronunciation notes
- అభిప్రాయం (abhiprayam, opinion) — five beats, a-bhi-pra-yam, with the ప్ర cluster flicked quickly. It opens formal opinions; pronounce it at full length, never rushed.
- అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను (angikaristunnanu, I agree) is the longest everyday word in this lesson — chunk it: angi-kari-stun-nanu.
- విభేదిస్తున్నాను (vibhedistunnanu, I disagree) — keep the భే long and soft (bhe); a hard short "be" sounds abrupt in a word whose whole job is to be gentle.
Common mistakes
- Declaring opinions as bare facts. "Online classes are bad" stated flatly sounds quarrelsome. Telugu softens with నాకు అనిపిస్తుంది or నా అభిప్రాయంలో — the softener is not weakness, it is manners.
- Forgetting the closing అని with అనుకుంటున్నాను. The thought clause must be closed: … మంచిదని అనుకుంటున్నాను (… manchidani anukuntunnanu — I think that … is good). An open clause leaves the listener waiting.
- Using నువ్వు-forms in a school debate. Discussions with teachers and in class keep మీరు-level language even when you disagree — disagree with the idea, respect the person.
Exam Experience
Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer.
(Ma badilo ninna oka charcha jarigindi. Amsham: "Cell phonu vidyarthulaku upayogama?" Kondaru vidyarthulu annaru: phonuto manam tvaraga nerchukovachchu ani. Marikondaru vibhedincharu: phonu dhyasa chedagodutundi ani. Chivaraga tiicharu garu chepparu: "Phonu oka panimuttu; danni ela vadalo nerchukovadame mukhyam." — Yesterday a debate was held in our school. The topic: "Is the cell phone useful for students?" Some students said: with a phone we can learn quickly. Some others disagreed: the phone spoils concentration. Finally the teacher said: "The phone is a tool; learning how to use it is what matters.")
- 1. What was the debate topic?
- 2. What did the two sides argue?
- 3. What was the teacher's conclusion?
Key: 1. Whether the cell phone is useful for students (సెల్ ఫోను విద్యార్థులకు ఉపయోగమా?). 2. For: quick learning (త్వరగా నేర్చుకోవచ్చు); against: spoils concentration (ధ్యాస చెడగొడుతుంది). 3. The phone is a tool; what matters is learning how to use it.
Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.
- 1. "In my opinion" is: a) నా అభిప్రాయంలో b) నాకు అభిప్రాయం ఉంది మాత్రమే c) అభిప్రాయం నాది కాదు — Answer: a) నా అభిప్రాయంలో. The others are not opinion frames.
- 2. To disagree politely you say: a) నువ్వు తప్పు b) క్షమించండి, నేను కొంచెం విభేదిస్తున్నాను c) అది అబద్ధం — Answer: b). Options a) and c) attack the person or call the idea a lie — both are rude in discussion.
- 3. సహోద్యోగి means: a) headmaster b) colleague c) student — Answer: b) colleague. Headmaster is ప్రధానోపాధ్యాయుడు, student is విద్యార్థి.
Guided writing. Give your opinion on the question "విద్యార్థులు పాఠశాల యూనిఫారం వేసుకోవాలా?" (Should students wear a school uniform?) in five sentences, using the opinion frame, ఎందుకంటే, ఉదాహరణకు, and చివరగా. Model answer: నా అభిప్రాయంలో, యూనిఫారం మంచిది. (Na abhiprayamlo, uniform manchidi. — In my opinion, a uniform is good.) ఎందుకంటే అది అందరినీ సమానంగా చూపిస్తుంది. (Endukante adi andarini samananga chupistundi. — Because it shows everyone as equal.) ఉదాహరణకు, యూనిఫారంతో ధనిక-పేద తేడా కనిపించదు. (Udaharanaku, uniformto dhanika-peda teda kanipinchadu. — For example, with a uniform the rich-poor difference is not visible.) కానీ ఒక వైపు, రోజూ ఒకే దుస్తులు విసుగు కూడా. (Kani oka vaipu, roju oke dustulu visugu kuda. — But on one hand, the same clothes every day is also boring.) చివరగా, నేను యూనిఫారాన్ని అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను. (Chivaraga, nenu uniformanni angikaristunnanu. — In conclusion, I support the uniform.) Marking notes: one mark per sentence; the four required devices (opinion frame, ఎందుకంటే-reason, ఉదాహరణకు-example, చివరగా-conclusion) must all appear and do their jobs — a connector used without a real reason or example earns no mark.
A class survey: reading results and reacting
మా తరగతిలో ఒక సర్వే జరిగింది. ప్రశ్న: "మీకు ఏ విషయం అంటే ఎక్కువ ఇష్టం?" (Ma taragatilo oka survey jarigindi. Prashna: "Miku e vishayam ante ekkuva ishtam?" — A survey was held in our class. The question: "Which subject do you like most?") యాభై శాతం విద్యార్థులు గణితం అన్నారు. ముప్పై శాతం విజ్ఞానం అన్నారు. (Yabhai shatam vidyarthulu ganitam annaru. Muppai shatam vijnanam annaru. — Fifty percent of students said maths. Thirty percent said science.) కేవలం ఇరవై శాతం భాషలు అన్నారు. (Kevalam iravai shatam bhashalu annaru. — Only twenty percent said languages.) నా అభిప్రాయంలో, భాషలు కూడా ముఖ్యమే — ఎందుకంటే భాష లేకుండా గణితం కూడా చెప్పలేము! (Na abhiprayamlo, bhashalu kuda mukhyame — endukante bhasha lekunda ganitam kuda cheppalemu! — In my opinion, languages are important too — because without language we cannot even state maths!)
Questions: 1. What percentage chose maths? (యాభై శాతం — 50%.) 2. Which subject came last? (Languages — భాషలు, 20%.) 3. What argument does the writer make for languages? (Without language, even maths cannot be expressed.)
Percentage chunk: శాతం (shatam, percent) follows the number: పది శాతం (10%), నూరు శాతం (100%). Numbers above twenty you need for surveys: ముప్పై (30), నలభై (40), యాభై (50), అరవై (60), డెబ్భై (70), ఎనభై (80), తొంభై (90).
More ways to react to an opinion
| Telugu | Pronunciation | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| మీరు చెప్పింది నిజమే | miru cheppindi nijame | What you say is true |
| ఆ విషయంలో నేను మీతో ఉన్నాను | a vishayamlo nenu mito unnanu | I am with you on that matter |
| కానీ మరో కోణం కూడా ఉంది | kani maro konam kuda undi | But there is another angle too |
| నాకు ఇంకా స్పష్టత కావాలి | naku inka spashtata kavali | I need more clarity still |
| మనం మధ్య మార్గం చూద్దాం | manam madhya margam chuddam | Let us look for a middle path |
Run a two-person survey in class or family: ask five people మీకు ఏ ఆట అంటే ఇష్టం? (which game do you like?), tally the results, and report them in three sentences using శాతం. Opinions plus numbers are the language of every real meeting you will ever attend.
Final drill: opinion ladder
Climb the opinion ladder on any topic — school food, cricket, homework: rung 1 soft view: నాకు అనిపిస్తుంది, … · rung 2 firm view: నా అభిప్రాయంలో … ఎందుకంటే … · rung 3 example: ఉదాహరణకు … · rung 4 balance: ఒక వైపు … మరో వైపు … · rung 5 close: చివరగా, నేను … అంగీకరిస్తున్నాను / విభేదిస్తున్నాను. Five rungs, five phrases from this lesson's tables — climb the ladder once a day on any topic in the news and class discussions will never strand you again.
