Lesson 12: Travel & Directions — ప్రయాణం మరియు దారి

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Travel Telugu is survival Telugu: asking where things are, giving and following directions (దారులు), and handling buses, autos and tickets without panic. This lesson builds the direction system (left, right, straight, near, far), the polite question frames, and the small negotiations that get you across any Telugu-speaking town.

Key idea. The master question is క్షమించండి, … ఎక్కడ ఉంది? (Kshaminchandi, … ekkada undi? — Excuse me, where is …?). Pair it with -కి from Lesson 6 — ఈ బస్సు విజయవాడకి వెళ్తుందా? (Does this bus go to Vijayawada?) — and you can cross a state.

Asking and answering: model exchanges

  • ఈ బస్సు గుంటూరుకి వెళ్తుందా? (I bassu Gunturuki veltunda? — Does this bus go to Guntur?)
  • స్టేషను ఇక్కడ నుంచి ఎంత దూరం? (Steshanu ikkada nunchi enta duram? — How far is the station from here?)
  • నడిచి వెళ్ళవచ్చా? (Nadichi vellavachcha? — Can I go on foot?)
  • ఎడమవైపు తిరిగి, నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి. (Edamavaipu tirigi, neruga vellandi. — Turn left and go straight.)
  • బడి బ్యాంకు పక్కన ఉంది. (Badi banku pakkana undi. — The school is beside the bank.)
  • ఆటోకి ఎంత అవుతుంది? (Autoki enta avutundi? — How much will the auto cost?)

Dialogue: asking the way

  • ప్రయాణికుడు: క్షమించండి, రైల్వే స్టేషను ఎక్కడ ఉంది? (Prayanikudu: Kshaminchandi, railway steshanu ekkada undi? — Traveller: Excuse me, where is the railway station?)
  • దారివాడు: నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి. కూడలి దగ్గర ఎడమవైపు తిరగండి. (Darivadu: Neruga vellandi. Kudali daggara edamavaipu tiragandi. — Passer-by: Go straight. Turn left at the junction.)
  • ప్రయాణికుడు: స్టేషను దూరమా? నడిచి వెళ్ళవచ్చా? (Prayanikudu: Steshanu durama? Nadichi vellavachcha? — Is the station far? Can I walk?)
  • దారివాడు: దగ్గరే! ఐదు నిమిషాలు. వంతెన తర్వాత కుడివైపు ఉంటుంది. (Darivadu: Daggare! Aidu nimishalu. Vantena tarvata kudivaipu untundi. — It is near! Five minutes. It is on the right after the bridge.)
  • ప్రయాణికుడు: చాలా ధన్యవాదాలు! (Prayanikudu: Cala dhanyavadalu! — Thank you very much!)

Comprehension questions

  • 1. Where does the traveller turn left?
  • 2. How long is the walk to the station?
  • 3. After what landmark is the station, and on which side?

Answer key: 1. At the junction (కూడలి దగ్గర). 2. Five minutes (ఐదు నిమిషాలు). 3. After the bridge (వంతెన తర్వాత), on the right (కుడివైపు).

Pronunciation notes

  • వైపు (vaipu, side/direction) — keep the diphthong full: *vai-pu*. In ఎడమవైపు / కుడివైపు the whole chunk should roll out as one word: e-da-ma-vai-pu.
  • దగ్గర (daggara, near) has a true double గ్గ: hold it — *dag-ga-ra*. Learners who soften it to "dagara" produce a word natives must guess at.
  • నేరుగా (neruga) — the రు is a single tongue tap, not an English r-plus-oo. Practise *ne-ru-ga* quickly and evenly.

Common mistakes

  • Left/right from your own view when listening. Directions are from the walker's viewpoint. When someone says ఎడమవైపు while facing you, mirror it in your mind before you move.
  • Saying "-కి వెళ్తుందా?" without the -కి. "Does this bus Vijayawada go?" is incomplete — the destination needs its suffix: విజయవాడకి వెళ్తుందా?
  • Confusing దగ్గర (near) with దూరం (far). They are opposites that share a first syllable. Anchor them: దగ్గర = దగ్గరే! (near, said gladly) and దూరం is the one that makes you reach for an auto.
Try it. Stand at your door and give directions aloud to three places — a shop, a school or park, and a friend's house — using నేరుగా, ఎడమవైపు, కుడివైపు, పక్కన, దగ్గర/దూరం at least once each. Then reverse one route: directions back home swap every left and right.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer.

(Ramana Hyderabaduki prayanam cheshadu. Atanu bassulo vimanashrayaniki velladu. Vimanashrayam uri bayata, nadiki daggaraga undi. Darilo atanu oka pedda vantena datadu. Vimanashrayam daggara atanu taksi tisukunnadu. Taksi draivaru atanni hoteluki tisukelladu; hotelu Charminaruki eduruga undi. — Ramana travelled to Hyderabad. He went by bus to the airport. The airport is outside the town, near the river. On the way he crossed a big bridge. Near the airport he took a taxi. The taxi driver took him to the hotel; the hotel is opposite Charminar.)

  • 1. How did Ramana reach the airport?
  • 2. What did he cross on the way?
  • 3. Where is the hotel?

Key: 1. By bus (బస్సులో). 2. A big bridge (పెద్ద వంతెన). 3. Opposite Charminar (చార్మినారుకి ఎదురుగా).

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

  • 1. "Turn right" (polite) is: a) కుడివైపు తిరగండి b) ఎడమవైపు తిరగండి c) నేరుగా తిరగండి — Answer: a) కుడివైపు తిరగండి. ఎడమవైపు is the left; "straight" does not take తిరగండి (turn) — you వెళ్ళండి (go) straight.
  • 2. వంతెన means: a) junction b) bridge c) corner — Answer: b) bridge. Junction is కూడలి, corner is మూల.
  • 3. "How far is it from here?" is: a) ఇక్కడ ఎంత ఉంది? b) ఇక్కడ నుంచి ఎంత దూరం? c) ఇది ఎవరిది? — Answer: b) ఇక్కడ నుంచి ఎంత దూరం? The ablative నుంచి (from) is what makes the question about distance.

Guided writing. Give directions from your school to your home in five sentences, using at least four direction words from this lesson. Model answer: మా బడి నుంచి నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి. (Ma badi nunchi neruga vellandi. — Go straight from our school.) కూడలి దగ్గర కుడివైపు తిరగండి. (Kudali daggara kudivaipu tiragandi. — Turn right at the junction.) తర్వాత ఎడమవైపు మొదటి వీధిలోకి వెళ్ళండి. (Tarvata edamavaipu modati vidhiloki vellandi. — Then go into the first street on the left.) మా ఇల్లు పార్కు పక్కన ఉంది. (Ma illu parku pakkana undi. — Our house is beside the park.) ఇది బడికి చాలా దగ్గర. (Idi badiki cala daggara. — It is very near the school.) Marking notes: one mark per sentence; -ండి polite imperatives are required (these are directions to a stranger), at least four distinct direction expressions must appear, and any left/right reversal in the route costs one mark.

At the station: the ticket window

  • ప్రయాణికుడు: ఒక టిక్కెట్టు ఇవ్వండి — విజయవాడకి. (Prayanikudu: Oka tikkeṭṭu ivvandi — Vijayavadaki. — Traveller: One ticket, please — to Vijayawada.)
  • క్లర్కు: ఏ రైలు? ఉదయం ఆరు గంటలదా, తొమ్మిది గంటలదా? (Klarku: E railu? Udayam aru gantalada, tommidi gantalada? — Clerk: Which train? The six o'clock one, or the nine o'clock?)
  • ప్రయాణికుడు: తొమ్మిది గంటల రైలు. రిజర్వేషన్ ఉందా? (Prayanikudu: Tommidi gantala railu. Reservation unda? — The nine o'clock train. Is reservation available?)
  • క్లర్కు: ఉంది. రెండు వందల యాభై రూపాయలు. ప్లాట్‌ఫారం మూడు. (Klarku: Undi. Rendu vandala yabhai rupayalu. Platform mudu. — Available. Two hundred and fifty rupees. Platform three.)
  • ప్రయాణికుడు: రైలు ఆలస్యమా? (Prayanikudu: Railu alasyama? — Is the train late?)
  • క్లర్కు: లేదు, సమయానికి బయలుదేరుతుంది. (Klarku: Ledu, samayaniki bayaluderutundi. — No, it departs on time.)

New chunks: బయలుదేరు (bayaluderu, depart/start), ఆలస్యం (alasyam, delay/late), సమయానికి (samayaniki, on time), రిజర్వేషన్ (reservation), ప్లాట్‌ఫారం (platform).

Reading a departures board

చార్మినార్ ఎక్స్‌ప్రెస్Charminar Expressఉదయం 9.15చెన్నై (Chennai)3

హుస్సేన్‌సాగర్ ఎక్స్‌ప్రెస్Hussainsagar Expressసాయంత్రం 5.45ముంబై (Mumbai)4

Questions on the board: 1. Which train leaves earliest? (The Godavari Express, 6.00, platform 1.) 2. You want Chennai at about nine — which train and platform? (Charminar Express, platform 3.) 3. Which platform for Mumbai? (Platform 4.)

Note the two real-world reading skills hidden in this table: train names honour rivers and places (Godavari, Charminar, Hussainsagar lake), and Indian platforms announce times in the same frame you learned for birthdays and exams — ఉదయం ఆరు గంటలకు (at six in the morning). Reading a board fluently is a genuine exam of Lessons 3, 5 and this one, combined.

Final drill: the two-minute guide

Imagine a visitor at your school gate. Guide them to your classroom in under two minutes, aloud, using this spine: నమస్కారం! మీరు ఎక్కడికి వెళ్ళాలి? … నేరుగా వెళ్ళండి … ఎడమవైపు/కుడివైపు తిరగండి … అది [place] పక్కన ఉంది … దగ్గరే! Then guide them *out* again — every left becomes a right, every పక్కన stays true. If you can do both directions without notes, travel Telugu is yours: stations, autos and junctions hold no terrors now.

One more pocket phrase for the road: ఇక్కడ ఆపండి! (ikkada apandi! — Stop here, please!) — the auto-driver's essential, polite -ండి and all. And its partner at the start of the ride: మీటరు వేయండి (mitaru veyandi — please put the meter on), which saves more money than any bargaining line in Lesson 13.

Bus-stop closer: ఈ బస్సు ఎన్ని గంటలకు వస్తుంది? (I bassu enni gantalaku vastundi? — At what time does this bus come?) — ప్రతి పది నిమిషాలకు ఒకటి వస్తుంది (prati padi nimishalaku okati vastundi — one comes every ten minutes). Ask it, hear it, and the bus stop becomes a classroom.
