Lesson 14: Health, Body & Weather — ఆరోగ్యం, శరీరం మరియు వాతావరణం

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

This lesson covers two conversations everyone eventually needs: telling a doctor what hurts and talking about the weather (వాతావరణం). You will learn the body parts, the pain pattern X + నొప్పి (noppi, pain), the "fever came to me" way Telugu expresses illness, and the weather words that open every small-talk exchange.

Key idea. Telugu illness is something that comes to you: నాకు జ్వరం వచ్చింది (naku jvaram vachchindi — fever came to me = I have a fever). You do not "have" a fever; it visits. Use నాకు … వచ్చింది / ఉంది and you will sound natural at once.

Body parts (శరీర భాగాలు)

Symptoms and the pain pattern

TeluguPronunciationMeaningTeluguPronunciationMeaning

కడుపునొప్పిkadupunoppistomach acheగొంతునొప్పిgontunoppisore throat
పన్నునొప్పిpannunoppitoothacheఅలసటalasatatiredness

The pattern: body part + నొప్పి (pain) = that part's ache — తల + నొప్పి = తలనొప్పి. Say it as one word, one smooth run.

At the doctor's: key sentences

  • మీకు ఏమైంది? (Miku emaindi? — What happened to you? / What is wrong?)
  • నాకు మూడు రోజుల నుంచి జ్వరం ఉంది. (Naku mudu rojula nunchi jvaram undi. — I have had a fever for three days.)
  • నాకు తలనొప్పిగా ఉంది. (Naku talanoppiga undi. — I have a headache.)
  • ఈ మాత్రలు రోజూ రెండు సార్లు వేసుకోండి. (I matralu roju rendu sarlu vesukondi. — Take these tablets twice a day.)
  • విశ్రాంతి తీసుకోండి, నీళ్ళు ఎక్కువగా తాగండి. (Vishranti tisukondi, nillu ekkuvaga tagandi. — Take rest, and drink plenty of water.)
  • నాకు ఇప్పుడు కొంచెం బాగుంది. (Naku ippudu konchem bagundi. — I feel a little better now.)

Weather words (వాతావరణం)

గాలిgaliwind, airమెరుపుmerupulightning
చలిchalicold (weather)తేమtemahumidity

Weather sentences: ఇవాళ వర్షం పడుతోంది (ivala varsham padutondi — it is raining today), చాలా ఎండగా ఉంది (cala endaga undi — it is very sunny/hot), గాలి గట్టిగా వీస్తోంది (gali gattiga vistondi — the wind is blowing strongly), రేపు చలిగా ఉంటుంది (repu chaliga untundi — tomorrow will be cold).

Dialogue: at the clinic

  • డాక్టరు గారు: మీకు ఏమైంది? (Daktaru garu: Miku emaindi? — Doctor: What is the matter?)
  • రోగి: నాకు రెండు రోజుల నుంచి జ్వరం, దగ్గు ఉన్నాయి. (Rogi: Naku rendu rojula nunchi jvaram, daggu unnayi. — Patient: I have had fever and a cough for two days.)
  • డాక్టరు గారు: గొంతునొప్పి కూడా ఉందా? (Daktaru garu: Gontunoppi kuda unda? — Do you also have a sore throat?)
  • రోగి: అవును, కొంచెం ఉంది. తలనొప్పి కూడా ఉంది. (Rogi: Avunu, konchem undi. Talanoppi kuda undi. — Yes, a little. I have a headache too.)
  • డాక్టరు గారు: ఈ మాత్రలు మూడు రోజులు వేసుకోండి. విశ్రాంతి తీసుకోండి. (Daktaru garu: I matralu mudu rojulu vesukondi. Vishranti tisukondi. — Take these tablets for three days. Take rest.)

Comprehension questions

  • 1. For how long has the patient had fever and cough?
  • 2. Which two other symptoms does the patient mention?
  • 3. For how many days must the tablets be taken?

Answer key: 1. Two days (రెండు రోజుల నుంచి). 2. A sore throat (గొంతునొప్పి) and a headache (తలనొప్పి). 3. Three days (మూడు రోజులు).

Pronunciation notes

  • జ్వరం (jvaram, fever) begins with the cluster జ్వ — *jva-ram*, the వ gliding straight off the జ. Practise it slowly; it is the first word you will need when ill.
  • నొప్పి (noppi) — the double ప్ప is a firm hold: *nop-pi*. A light single ప makes it sound like a different (non-)word.
  • ఉరుము (urumu, thunder) versus మెరుపు (merupu, lightning): the second starts with మె — keep the మ clear; mixing them up swaps thunder for lightning in the middle of a storm report.

Common mistakes

  • "నేను జ్వరం ఉన్నాను" for "I have a fever". The fever is the subject, you are the receiver: నాకు జ్వరం ఉంది / వచ్చింది. Building illness on నేను produces grammar no native uses.
  • Saying నొప్పి alone for every illness. Pain words name pain only — a fever is జ్వరం, a cough is దగ్గు. "నాకు జ్వరనొప్పి" is not a word.
  • Confusing ఎండ (sunshine) with వేడి (heat). A day can be వేడిగా (hot) under cloud; ఎండ is the sun itself shining. "It is sunny" = ఎండగా ఉంది.
Try it. Practise the clinic dialogue with a partner, then swap in new symptoms from the tables (toothache, stomach ache, a cold) and a new duration (రెండు రోజుల నుంచి → నాలుగు రోజుల నుంచి). Then give a three-sentence weather report for today, tomorrow, and yesterday using ఇవాళ / రేపు / నిన్న and at least two weather words each.

Exam Experience

Reading comprehension. Read the passage and answer.

సోమవారం ఉదయం లేచినప్పుడు నాకు తలనొప్పిగా ఉంది. బయట వర్షం ఎక్కువగా పడుతోంది; గాలి కూడా గట్టిగా వీస్తోంది. అమ్మ నాకు వేడి పాలు ఇచ్చింది. నేను బడికి వెళ్ళలేదు. డాక్టరు గారు చెప్పారు: "రెండు రోజులు విశ్రాంతి తీసుకో." (Somavaram udayam lechinappudu naku talanoppiga undi. Bayata varsham ekkuvaga padutondi; gali kuda gattiga vistondi. Amma naku vedi palu ichchindi. Nenu badiki vellaledu. Daktaru garu chepparu: "Rendu rojulu vishranti tisuko." — When I woke up on Monday morning, I had a headache. Outside, it was raining heavily; the wind was also blowing strongly. Mother gave me hot milk. I did not go to school. The doctor said: "Take rest for two days.")

  • 1. What symptom did the writer have on waking?
  • 2. What was the weather like outside?
  • 3. What did the doctor advise?

Key: 1. A headache (తలనొప్పిగా ఉంది). 2. Heavy rain and strong wind (వర్షం ఎక్కువగా; గాలి గట్టిగా). 3. Rest for two days (రెండు రోజులు విశ్రాంతి).

Multiple choice. Choose the correct answer.

  • 1. "I have a fever" is: a) నేను జ్వరం ఉన్నాను b) నాకు జ్వరం వచ్చింది c) నా జ్వరం నేను — Answer: b) నాకు జ్వరం వచ్చింది. Illness "comes to" the receiver — నాకు … వచ్చింది.
  • 2. ఉరుము means: a) lightning b) cloud c) thunder — Answer: c) thunder. Lightning is మెరుపు, cloud is మేఘం.
  • 3. Toothache is: a) తలనొప్పి b) పన్నునొప్పి c) గొంతునొప్పి — Answer: b) పన్నునొప్పి — పన్ను (tooth) + నొప్పి (pain). Option a) is headache, c) is sore throat.

Guided writing. Write a short message to your teacher explaining that you are ill and cannot come to school today: name two symptoms, say since when, and promise to return. Model answer: నమస్కారం, టీచరు గారు! (Namaskaram, tiicharu garu! — Greetings, teacher!) నాకు నిన్న నుంచి జ్వరం, తలనొప్పి ఉన్నాయి. (Naku ninna nunchi jvaram, talanoppi unnayi. — I have had fever and a headache since yesterday.) కాబట్టి నేను ఇవాళ బడికి రాలేను. (Kabatti nenu ivala badiki ralenu. — So I cannot come to school today.) డాక్టరు గారు రెండు రోజులు విశ్రాంతి చెప్పారు. (Daktaru garu rendu rojulu vishranti chepparu. — The doctor advised two days' rest.) నేను బుధవారం ఖచ్చితంగా వస్తాను. ధన్యవాదాలు! (Nenu Budhavaram khachchitanga vastanu. Dhanyavadalu! — I will certainly come on Wednesday. Thank you!) Marking notes: one mark per sentence; symptoms must use the నాకు … ఉంది/వచ్చింది pattern, the duration must use నుంచి, and the polite frame (greeting with గారు + closing thanks) earns the register mark.

The three seasons of the Telugu year

SeasonPronunciationMonths (roughly)In one line
వేసవికాలంvesavikalamMarch–Juneచాలా ఎండ, వేడి గాలి — much sun, hot wind
వర్షాకాలంvarshakalamJune–Septemberవర్షాలు, మేఘాలు, చల్లని గాలి — rains, clouds, cool breeze
చలికాలంchalikalamNovember–Februaryచలి, మంచు, పొడి గాలి — cold, dew/fog, dry air

వేసవిలో ఉష్ణోగ్రత నలభై డిగ్రీలు దాటుతుంది. (Vesavilo ushnograta nalabhai digrilu datutundi. — In summer the temperature crosses forty degrees.) వర్షాకాలంలో రోడ్లు తడిగా ఉంటాయి. (Varshakalamlo rodlu tadiga untayi. — In the rainy season the roads are wet.) చలికాలంలో ఉదయం మంచు ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది. (Chalikalamlo udayam manchu ekkuvaga untundi. — In winter there is more fog in the mornings.)

A five-day forecast: read and answer

DayForecast (Telugu)Meaning
సోమవారంఎండగా ఉంటుంది, 38°sunny, 38°
మంగళవారంమేఘాలు ఉంటాయి, 34°cloudy, 34°
బుధవారంవర్షం పడుతుంది, 29°rain, 29°
గురువారంగాలి గట్టిగా వీస్తుంది, 30°strong wind, 30°
శుక్రవారంచల్లగా ఉంటుంది, 27°cool, 27°

Questions: 1. Which is the hottest day? (Monday — సోమవారం, 38°.) 2. When will it rain? (Wednesday — బుధవారం.) 3. Which day suits a picnic — and say why in one Telugu sentence. (Friday: శుక్రవారం చల్లగా ఉంటుంది, కాబట్టి పిక్నిక్కి మంచిది — Friday will be cool, so it is good for a picnic.)

Weather is the world's safest conversation topic, and in Telugu it runs on the verbs of Lessons 4–5 plus this lesson's nouns. Practise by giving tomorrow's real forecast aloud in three sentences — your listeners will understand every word, which is more than most beginners can promise about the weather.

Final drill: doctor and sky

Two performances, thirty seconds each. One — the patient: walk into an imaginary clinic and report: నాకు నిన్న నుంచి [symptom] ఉంది. [body part]నొప్పి కూడా ఉంది. Then be the doctor: ఈ మాత్రలు [days] రోజులు వేసుకోండి. విశ్రాంతి తీసుకోండి. Two — the forecaster: stand tall and announce tomorrow: రేపు [weather word] ఉంటుంది. [second weather word] కూడా ఉండవచ్చు. If both performances flow without a glance at the tables, health and weather Telugu — the two most human topics in the language — are safely yours.
