Lesson 19: Conversation — Debate, Interview & Storytelling —

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

Everything so far converges here: conversation at full stretch. This lesson gives you three performance genres — debate (ਬਹਿਸ, bahis), the interview (ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ, iṇṭarviū), and storytelling (ਕਹਾਣੀ ਸੁਣਾਉਣਾ, kahāṇī suṇāuṇā) — with the signpost language each one needs: proposing, conceding and countering in debate; question ladders in interviews; and the sequencers (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਫਿਰ, ਅਚਾਨਕ, ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ) that make a story walk instead of stumble.

(*Mere khiāl vicc mobāil fon vidiārthī laī lābhdāiak hai. Pahilī gall ih hai ki fon nāl giān mildā hai. Dūjī gall, muśkal vicc māpiāṅ nūṅ khabar mildī hai.* — In my opinion the mobile phone is beneficial for a student. First, knowledge is gained through the phone. Second, in difficulty, parents get news.)

Interview language: the question ladder

Interviews climb from fact to feeling: Model exchange with a hockey player:

— *Savāl: Tusīṅ kheḍṇā kadōṅ śurū kītā?* — Question: When did you start playing? — *Javāb: Maiṅ aṭṭh sāl dī umar vicc śurū kītā.* — Answer: I started at the age of eight. — *Savāl: Tuhāḍī sabh tōṅ vaḍḍī jitt kihṛī hai?* — Question: Which is your biggest win? — *Javāb: Rāśṭrī kheḍāṅ dī jitt.* — Answer: The national games win. — *Savāl: Naujavānāṅ nūṅ tuhāḍā snehā kī hai?* — Question: What is your message to the youth? — *Javāb: Mihnat karo ate kade hār nā manno.* — Answer: Work hard and never accept defeat.

Storytelling: the sequencers

A model story

*Ikk vār dī gall hai. Ikk pinḍ vicc ikk siāṇā bazurg rahindā sī. Ikk din ikk naujavān us kol āiā. Naujavān ne kihā, "Maiṅ har kamm vicc asfal hundā hāṅ." Bazurg ne ikk kapp cāh dittī ate kihā, "Pahilāṅ cāh pī." Phir uh boliā, "Nadī rukdī nahīṅ; uh rastā badaldī hai. Tūṅ vī rastā badal, ruk nā." Acānak naujavān dī akkh khulhī. Us din tōṅ uh naveṅ raste labhṇa laggā. Ant vicc uh safal hoiā.* Once upon a time. In a village there lived a wise elder. One day a young man came to him. The young man said, "I fail in every task." The elder gave him a cup of tea and said, "First, drink tea." Then he said, "A river does not stop; it changes its course. You too change course — do not stop." Suddenly the young man's eyes opened. From that day he began to find new paths. In the end, he succeeded.

Comprehension questions: What was the young man's complaint? What did the elder do before advising? What is the story's teaching, in the elder's own image? Answers: He fails at everything He gave him tea first (ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਚਾਹ) — wisdom arrives after welcome. The river image: don't stop; change course.

Pronunciation focus: performance melody

Debate wants weight on the signposts — ਪਹਿਲੀ ਗੱਲ … ਦੂਜੀ ਗੱਲ … land like drumbeats, slightly slower than the flesh between them. Storytelling wants the opposite: ਅਚਾਨਕ (acānak, suddenly) is a small explosion — quicken and lift; ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ (ant vicc) slows and falls. In interviews, question intonation rises politely ↗) and the guest's answers fall in complete, courteous arcs. And keep quoted speech honest: when you voice the elder, drop your pitch a register — Punjabi listeners mark character voices with melody before grammar.

Common mistakes

  • Debating without conceding. A speech of only ਹੱਕ/ਵਿਰੁੱਧ sounds like a wall; examiners reward the ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਠੀਕ ਹੈ, ਪਰ… turn — it proves you heard the other side.
  • Interview questions all at one height. Asking ਕਿਉਂ (why) first feels like an interrogation; climb the ladder: facts first, reasons later, opinion last.
  • Story in the present habitual. Wrong: ਨੌਜਵਾਨ ਆਉਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ for a finished tale — Right: choose the perfective chain (ਆਇਆ, ਕਿਹਾ, ਦਿੱਤੀ) with habitual only for background habits. Stories are built of completed beads on a past string.
  • ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ at the beginning. Sequencers are promises: ਅੰਤ (the end) may only arrive once. Spend ਫਿਰ carefully — a story of nine ਫਿਰs is a staircase with no landings.
Try it. Stage it: in threes — one debates for two minutes on "village life is better than city life" using all four signposts; one interviews the third, a "famous farmer", with a five-rung ladder; then the third retells the farmer's life as a story opening with ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ and closing with ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ.
Key idea. Debate = ਹੱਕ/ਵਿਰੁੱਧ + signposts + one honest concession; interview = the ladder from fact to feeling; story = perfective beads on sequencers, ਅਚਾਨਕ in the middle and ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ exactly once.

Exam Experience

*Reḍīo iṇṭarviū: Savāl — Tusīṅ gāuṇā kiveṅ sikkhiā? Javāb — Merī dādī mainūṅ gīt suṇāundī sī. Pahilāṅ maiṅ us nāl gāundā sī. Phir maiṅ saṅgītkār kol giā. Acānak ikk din mainūṅ vaḍḍe mañc tōṅ saddā āiā. Mere khiāl vicc saṅgīt mihnat ate piār dovāṅ nāl āundā hai. Ant vicc maiṅ kahāṅgā: suṇnā sabh tōṅ vaḍḍī sikkhiā hai.* Radio interview: Question — How did you learn to sing? Answer — My grandmother used to sing songs to me. First I sang with her. Then I went to a music teacher. Suddenly one day an invitation came from a big stage. In my opinion music comes with both hard work and love. In the end I will say: listening is the greatest learning.

  • Who first taught the singer, and how?
  • What happened suddenly one day?
  • What does the singer finally call the greatest learning?

Answer key: His grandmother, by singing songs to him An invitation from a big stage arrived

### Multiple choice

  • 1. In a debate, ਮੈਂ ਇਸ ਦੇ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਹਾਂ means… a) I am in favour b) I am against this c) I conclude d) for example — Answer: b) ਵਿਰੁੱਧ (viruddh) = against; ਹੱਕ ਵਿੱਚ = in favour.
  • 2. Which sequencer opens a traditional story? a) ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ b) ਅਚਾਨਕ c) ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ d) ਫਿਰ — Answer: c) ਇੱਕ ਵਾਰ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ ("it is a matter of once") is the Punjabi "once upon a time"; ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ can only close.
  • 3. In an interview, which question belongs on the highest (opinion) rung? a) — Answer: c) It asks for an opinion (ਰਾਏ); the others gather facts for the lower rungs.

### Guided writing Task: Write a short story (six to eight sentences) about a lost bicycle, a helpful stranger, or an exam morning, using at least four sequencers and one line of quoted speech with ਨੇ. Three-form format for the opening and closing sentences. — *Ikk vār dī gall hai. Merī sāīkal sakūl de bāharōṅ gumm ho gaī.* — Once upon a time. My bicycle was lost from outside the school. *(Maiṅ har thāṅ labbhī, par sāīkal nā milī. — I searched everywhere, but the bicycle was not found.)* ਅਚਾਨਕ ਇੱਕ ਬਜ਼ੁਰਗ ਆਇਆ। *(Acānak ikk bazurg āiā. *(Us ne kihā, "Ghabrā nā; maiṅ sāīkal dekhī hai." — He said, "Don't worry; I have seen the bicycle.")* ਫਿਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਾਰਕ ਗਏ। *(Phir asīṅ pārak gae. — Then we went to the park.)* ਸਾਈਕਲ ਦਰੱਖ਼ਤ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਸੀ! *(Sāīkal darakkhat heṭhāṅ sī! — The bicycle was under the tree!)* ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਮੈਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ: ਮਦਦ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ ਨੇੜੇ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ। — *Ant vicc maiṅ samjhiā: madad hameśā neṛe hundī hai.* — In the end I understood: help is always near. Marking notes: Sequencers (4 required) must be ordered plausibly — ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ anywhere but last loses the structure mark. The quoted line must show correct ergative framing Perfective verbs must agree with their objects Present-habitual narration throughout caps the mark at half.

Going deeper: taking turns and the telephone

Conversation has traffic rules, and Punjabi phrases police them kindly: (*Merī vārī hai.* — It is my turn.) (*Ikk minaṭ, gall mukā lavāṅ.* — One minute, let me finish the point.) (*Māf karnā, tuhāḍā matlab kī hai?* — Excuse me, what do you mean?) On the phone, the opening is pure Punjab: (*Hailo, kauṇ bol rihā hai?* — Hello, who is speaking?) (*Maiṅ Harjot bol rihā hāṅ. Ravī hai?* — Harjot speaking. Is Ravi there?) Keep interruptions padded with ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰਨਾ and the debate stays a debate, not a brawl.
