Lesson 16: Conditionals & Wishes — ਸ਼ਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਛਾਵਾਂ

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

"ਤਾਂ (tāṅ)" — the little word that carries every Punjabi *if* home. This lesson completes the conditional system you began with ਜੇਕਰ in Lesson 10: real conditions about the future, unreal conditions about dreams and regrets, the subjunctive verb forms that power both, and the language of wishing — ਕਾਸ਼ (kāś, if only) and ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (cāhīdā, should/ought). It also introduces the verb form examiners love most: ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ… (je maiṅ hundā…, if I were…).

The two condition types

Typeਜੇ-clause (condition)ਤਾਂ-clause (result)Example shape
Real (possible, future)subjunctive or past-habitual formfutureਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ
Unreal (imagined, contrary)habitual past form (ਦਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ)habitual past form (ਦਾ)ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਮੀਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਘਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ

Real conditions — the ਜੇ side uses the subjunctive (ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, "rain falls/may fall"); the ਤਾਂ side answers with the future:

  • ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ। — *Je mīṅh piā, tāṅ asīṅ ghar rahāṅge.* — If it rains, we will stay home.
  • ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰੋਗੇ, ਤਾਂ ਸਫਲ ਹੋਵੋਗੇ। — *Je tusīṅ mihnat karoge, tāṅ safal hovoge.* — If you work hard, you will succeed. (Common alternative shape: both sides future — heard daily.)
  • ਜੇ ਬੱਸ ਨਾ ਆਈ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਪੈਦਲ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੇ। — *Je bass nā āī, tāṅ asīṅ paidal jāvāṅge.* — If the bus doesn't come, we will walk.

Unreal conditions — both sides wear the habitual-past dress, and ਹੁੰਦਾ (hundā, would be) is the star:

  • ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਛੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਡਦਾ। — *Je maiṅ pañchhī hundā, tāṅ maiṅ uḍḍdā.* — If I were a bird, I would fly.
  • ਜੇ ਉਸ ਕੋਲ ਪੈਸੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਕਾਰ ਲੈਂਦਾ। — *Je us kol paise hunde, tāṅ uh kār laindā.* — If he had money, he would buy a car.
  • ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਆਉਂਦੇ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਮਿਲਦੇ। — *Je tusīṅ kallh āunde, tāṅ asīṅ milde.* — If you had come yesterday, we would have met.

The signal is the *combination*: ਜੇ + a ਦਾ/ਹੁੰਦਾ-form on both sides = imagination, not fact. English does the same trick with past forms ("if I *were*"), so your ear already knows the melody.

The subjunctive: the verb of maybe

The subjunctive is the bare future stem (no -ਗਾ): ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ (jāvāṅ, may I go), ਉਹ ਜਾਵੇ (jāve, may he go), ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਈਏ (jāīe, let us go). It lives after verbs of wanting, hoping and necessity:

  • ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਓ। — *Maiṅ cāhundā hāṅ ki tusīṅ āo.* — I want you to come. (ਕਿ + ਆਓ, subjunctive)
  • ਉਮੀਦ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਵੇ। — *Umīd hai ki uh ṭhīk ho jāve.* — It is hoped that he will get well.
  • ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਵੇ। — *Ho sakdā hai ki mīṅh pave.* — It is possible that it may rain.

Wishes and ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (should)

  • ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ! — *Kāś maiṅ Panjābī bol sakdā!* — If only I could speak Punjabi! (ਕਾਸ਼ + habitual past dress = a wish about now.)
  • ਕਾਸ਼ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ! — *Kāś uh itthe hundā!* — If only he were here!
  • ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। — *Mainūṅ jāṇā cāhīdā hai.* — I should go (it is proper for me to go). ਚਾਹੀਦਾ is impersonal: person in ਨੂੰ-form + infinitive + ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (ਹੈ). It never agrees with anything — one shape serves all.
  • ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। — *Vidiārthīāṅ nūṅ mihnat karnī cāhīdī hai.* — Students should work hard. (Here the infinitive is feminine ਕਰਨੀ because ਮਿਹਨਤ is feminine — the infinitive agrees with its object, and ਚਾਹੀਦੀ follows suit. With a plain action and no feminine object, default ਚਾਹੀਦਾ stands.)

Dialogue: planning a trip

ਸਿਮਰਨ: ਜੇ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਮਿਲੇ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੇ। — *Simran: Je chhuṭṭī mile, tāṅ asīṅ pahāṛāṅ vicc jāvāṅge.* — Simran: If we get leave, we will go to the mountains. ਜਸ: ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ? — *Jas: Je mīṅh piā, tāṅ?* — Jas: And if it rains? ਸਿਮਰਨ: ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਹੋਟਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਂਗੇ। — *Simran: Tāṅ asīṅ hoṭal vicc rahāṅge ate kitābāṅ paṛhāṅge.* — Simran: Then we will stay in the hotel and read books. ਜਸ: ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਵੀ ਛੁੱਟੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ! — *Jas: Kāś mere kol vī chhuṭṭī hundī!* — Jas: If only I had leave too! ਸਿਮਰਨ: ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। — *Simran: Tuhānūṅ mālak nūṅ kahiṇā cāhīdā hai.* — Simran: You should tell the boss.

Comprehension questions: Where will they go if leave is granted? What is the rain plan? What does Simran advise Jas to do? Answers: To the mountains (ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ). Stay in the hotel and read books. Tell the boss (ਮਾਲਕ ਨੂੰ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ).

Pronunciation focus: the subjunctive lift

Subjunctive endings are light and quick — ਜਾਵਾਂ (jāvāṅ), ਆਵੇ (āve), ਪਵੇ (pave) — the voice should *not* settle the way it does on futures (ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ lands; ਜਾਵਾਂ floats). In ਕਾਸ਼-wishes, the melody is a long sigh: Kāś… with the habitual form trailing. And note ਮਿਲੇ (mile, may get/be found) in the dialogue — subjunctive of ਮਿਲਣਾ; its flat cousin ਮਿਲਿਆ (miliā) is the completed past. Hearing the lift distinguishes hope from history.

Common mistakes

  • Future tense inside the ਜੇ-clause calqued from English "if it will rain". Wrong: ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਵੇਗਾ — Right: ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ/ਪਵੇ (subjunctive side) — the future belongs in the ਤਾਂ-clause: ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ. (The both-futures shape ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰੋਗੇ is accepted speech for *advice-style* conditions, but exam Punjabi wants the subjunctive in ਜੇ.)
  • ਚਾਹੀਦਾ agreeing with the person. Wrong: ਮੈਂ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹਾਂ — Right: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। The wisher stands in ਨੂੰ; ਹੈ never becomes ਹਾਂ here.
  • Unreal conditions wearing future dress. Wrong: ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਛੀ ਹੋਵਾਂਗਾ — Right: ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਛੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਉੱਡਦਾ। Dreams dress in the habitual past.
  • ਕਾਸ਼ with the plain present. Wrong: ਕਾਸ਼ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੈ — Right: ਕਾਸ਼ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ! A wish contradicts the present, so the verb must leave it.
Try it. Dream round: each partner completes three stems aloud — ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਅਮੀਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ/ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤਾਂ…; ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ/ਹੁੰਦੀ, ਤਾਂ…; ਕਾਸ਼… — then one real plan with ਜੇ…ਤਾਂ… and the future. Four conditionals, four melodies.
Key idea. ਜੇ + subjunctive → ਤਾਂ + future is a plan; ਜੇ + ਹੁੰਦਾ-forms on both sides is a dream; ਕਾਸ਼ turns the dream into a wish; and ਚਾਹੀਦਾ states duty with the person in ਨੂੰ.

Exam Experience

*Mandeep kahindā hai: je maiṅ imtihān vicc pās ho jāvāṅ, tāṅ maiṅ ḍākṭar baṇāṅgā. Mainūṅ bahut mihnat karnī cāhīdī hai. Kāś mere kol hor samāṅ hundā! Par uh ih vī kahindā hai: je samāṅ nahīṅ, tāṅ mihnat hai.* Mandeep says: if I pass the exam, I will become a doctor. I should work very hard. If only I had more time! But he also says this: if there is no time, then there is hard work (effort substitutes).

  • What does Mandeep want to become, and on what condition?
  • What does he wish he had more of?
  • What is his plan B, in his own logic?

Answer key: A doctor — if he passes the exam (ਜੇ…ਪਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ). Time (ਸਮਾਂ). If he has no time, effort alone must do — ਮਿਹਨਤ in place of ਸਮਾਂ.

### Multiple choice

  • 1. "If it rains, we will stay home" in exam shape is… a) ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਵੇਗਾ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ b) ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ c) ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪੈਂਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ ਹੈ d) ਜੇ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਿਆ, ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ — Answer: b) Subjunctive ਪਿਆ in the ਜੇ-clause, future ਰਹਾਂਗੇ in the ਤਾਂ-clause. a) puts the future in the condition; d) ends in a habitual present.
  • 2. "I should study" is… a) ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹਾਂ b) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ c) ਮੇਰਾ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੋ d) ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹਾਂ — Answer: b) ਚਾਹੀਦਾ is impersonal: person in ਨੂੰ-form + infinitive + ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।
  • 3. ਕਾਸ਼ ਉਹ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦਾ means… a) he is here b) he will be here c) if only he were here d) he should be here — Answer: c) ਕਾਸ਼ + habitual-past form (ਹੁੰਦਾ) expresses a wish contrary to fact.

### Guided writing Task: Write four sentences: (1) a real plan with ਜੇ…ਤਾਂ… and the future, (2) an unreal dream with ਹੁੰਦਾ-forms, (3) a ਕਾਸ਼ wish, (4) a duty sentence with ਚਾਹੀਦਾ. Three-form format. Model answer: ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕਾਲਜ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ। — *Je maiṅ pās ho jāvāṅ, tāṅ maiṅ kālaj jāvāṅgā.* — If I pass, I will go to college. ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਪੰਛੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਪਹਾੜਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਉੱਡਦਾ। — *Je maiṅ pañchhī hundā, tāṅ maiṅ pahāṛāṅ utte uḍḍdā.* — If I were a bird, I would fly over the mountains. ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੇਰੀ ਦਾਦੀ ਇੱਥੇ ਹੁੰਦੀ! — *Kāś merī dādī itthe hundī!* — If only my grandmother were here! ਮੈਨੂੰ ਰੋਜ਼ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। — *Mainūṅ roz Panjābī paṛhnī cāhīdī hai.* — I should study Punjabi every day. (ਪੜ੍ਹਨੀ feminine, agreeing with ਪੰਜਾਬੀ.) Marking notes: (1) needs subjunctive in ਜੇ and a -ਗਾ future after ਤਾਂ. (2) needs ਹੁੰਦਾ-type forms on BOTH sides; a future ending on either side loses the mark. (3) needs ਕਾਸ਼ + an unreal form (ਹੁੰਦਾ/ਹੁੰਦੀ agreeing with its subject — ਦਾਦੀ → ਹੁੰਦੀ). (4) needs the ਨੂੰ person + infinitive; ਚਾਹੀਦੀ with a feminine infinitive/object is the polished form and earns full marks, plain ਚਾਹੀਦਾ earns three-quarters.

Going deeper: regrets and good advice

Regret is the unreal conditional aimed at the past, and Punjabi builds it with the same ਹੁੰਦਾ family plus ਕਾਸ਼: ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ! (*Kāś maiṅ us sameṅ paṛhiā hundā!* — If only I had studied at that time!) ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ। (*Je tusīṅ mainūṅ dassiā hundā, tāṅ maiṅ ā jāndā.* — If you had told me, I would have come.) Advice, the forward-looking cousin, rides on ਸਲਾਹ (salāh, advice) and the subjunctive: ਮੇਰੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਲੋ। (*Merī salāh hai ki tusīṅ ḍākṭar nūṅ milo.* — My advice is that you see a doctor.) ਬਿਹਤਰ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅੱਜ ਹੀ ਅਰਜ਼ੀ ਦਿਓ। (*Bihatar hovegā je tusīṅ ajj hī arzī dio.* — It will be better if you apply today itself.) Between ਕਾਸ਼ behind you and ਸਲਾਹ ahead of you sits the whole moral weather of conversation.
