Lesson 16: Advanced 把/被 & Complements — 把字句、被字句和补语

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

By now you have met the 把 construction once (Lesson 10) and complements twice (Lessons 5 and 9). This lesson brings the whole advanced system together: 把 sentences that report exactly what was done *to* something, 被 sentences that flip the camera to the receiver of the action — the passive — and the three complement families that attach every possible outcome to a verb: result complements (看完, 听懂, 写错), direction complements (进来, 出去, 上来, 下去) and potential complements (看得见, 听不懂 — "can / cannot manage to"). These patterns are not decorative grammar; they are the machinery of natural, precise Mandarin. A native speaker does not say "I read the book" vaguely — she says 我把书看完了 (I took the book and read it to the end) or 书被我看完了 (The book got read through by me). Now you can too.

Grammar patterns: 把, 被 and complements

PatternStructureExampleMeaning
把 basicS + 把 + O + V + result/了我把门打开了。 (Wǒ bǎ mén dǎkāi le.)I opened the door.
把 negativeS + 没 + 把 + O + V + result我没把作业做完。 (Wǒ méi bǎ zuòyè zuò wán.)I didn't finish the homework.
被 passivereceiver + 被 + doer + V + result我的书被他拿走了。 (Wǒ de shū bèi tā ná zǒu le.)My book was taken away by him.
被 without doerreceiver + 被 + V + result自行车被骑走了。 (Zìxíngchē bèi qí zǒu le.)The bike was ridden off.
result complementV + 完/懂/错/开/好你写错了。 (Nǐ xiě cuò le.)You wrote it wrong.
direction complementV + 来/去 (+ direction)他跑进来了。 (Tā pǎo jìnlái le.)He ran in.
potential complementV + 得/不 + result我听得懂。/ 我听不懂。 (Wǒ tīng de dǒng. / Wǒ tīng bù dǒng.)I can / cannot understand by listening.

Four conditions govern 把: (1) the object is specific and known; (2) the verb carries a result, direction or 了 — a bare verb is impossible; (3) the negation 没 and adverbs like 都/已经 stand before 把, never between 把 and the verb; (4) verbs of feeling or state (是、有、喜欢、知道) never enter 把 sentences. 被 reverses the viewpoint: the receiver becomes the subject, and the sentence usually reports something noteworthy or unfortunate — 我的手机被弟弟拿走了 is a complaint, not a weather report.

Example sentences

  • 请把窗户关上。 (Qǐng bǎ chuānghu guānshang. — Please close the window.)
  • 她把房间打扫干净了。 (Tā bǎ fángjiān dǎsǎo gānjìng le. — She cleaned the room [made it clean].)
  • 我把护照忘在家里了。 (Wǒ bǎ hùzhào wàng zài jiā lǐ le. — I left my passport at home [forgot it there].)
  • 雨伞被风吹走了。 (Yǔsǎn bèi fēng chuī zǒu le. — The umbrella was blown away by the wind.)
  • 他把我的名字写错了。 (Tā bǎ wǒ de míngzi xiě cuò le. — He wrote my name wrong.)
  • 老师进来了,学生们都安静了。 (Lǎoshī jìnlái le, xuéshengmen dōu ānjìng le. — The teacher came in, and the students all went quiet.)
  • 这本书太难了,我看不懂。 (Zhè běn shū tài nán le, wǒ kàn bù dǒng. — This book is too hard; I can't understand it by reading.)
  • 你找得到你的钥匙吗? (Nǐ zhǎo de dào nǐ de yàoshi ma? — Can you manage to find your keys?)

Building the characters: hand and result families

CharacterPinyinMeaningInside the character
把bǎdisposal marker扌 (hand) + 巴: the hand takes charge of the object
被bèipassive marker衤 (clothing) + 皮: originally a quilt that *covers* the receiver
拿náto take; hold手 (hand) below 合: the hand closes over something
放fàngto put; release攵 (hand with stick) + 方
忘wàngto forget亡 + 心 (heart): what the heart has lost
净jìngclean (in 干净)冫 (ice) + 争: clean as ice

忘 is the mirror of 忙 from Lesson 15 (heart + 亡): 忙 is the heart overwhelmed; 忘 is the heart letting something slip away. Chinese built both modern anxieties from the same two pieces.

Tone practice: complement syllables

Result complements carry real tones and real meaning: 完 (wán), 错 (cuò), 开 (kāi), 走 (zǒu), 见 (jiàn, in 看见). Direction complements soften in flow: 进来 (jìnlái), 出去 (chūqù) keep their tones but lose stress. Drill the potential pairs, where 得/不 flips everything:

PairPinyinMeanings
看得见 / 看不见kàn de jiàn / kàn bú jiàncan see it / cannot see it
听得懂 / 听不懂tīng de dǒng / tīng bù dǒngcan understand / cannot understand
做得完 / 做不完zuò de wán / zuò bù wáncan finish / cannot finish
回得来 / 回不来huí de lái / huí bù láican get back / cannot get back

Dialogue: the lost umbrella

  • A:下雨了!我的雨伞呢? (Xià yǔ le! Wǒ de yǔsǎn ne? — It's raining! Where's my umbrella?)
  • B:你的雨伞被风吹到楼下去了。 (Nǐ de yǔsǎn bèi fēng chuī dào lóu xià qù le. — Your umbrella was blown downstairs by the wind.)
  • A:啊?我去把它找回来。 (Ā? Wǒ qù bǎ tā zhǎo huílái. — What? I'll go and fetch it back.)
  • B:雨太大了,你看得见路吗? (Yǔ tài dà le, nǐ kàn de jiàn lù ma? — The rain is so heavy — can you see the road?)
  • A:看得见。没关系,我把门关上就去。 (Kàn de jiàn. Méi guānxi, wǒ bǎ mén guānshang jiù qù. — I can see it. No problem — I'll close the door and go.)
  • B:路上小心! (Lùshang xiǎoxīn! — Be careful on the way!)

Questions: 1) What happened to the umbrella? 2) What does A plan to do? 3) What does A do before leaving?

Answer key: 1) The wind blew it downstairs (被风吹到楼下去了). 2) Fetch it back (把它找回来). 3) Close the door (把门关上).

Pronunciation notes for this lesson

被 (bèi) is a full, firm 4th tone — do not let it soften into the neutral tone of sentence particles; the passive meaning hangs on it. In 把 sentences the rhythm is Subject–把–Object, all before the verb, so the verb phrase lands at the end like a punch: wǒ bǎ shū — kàn wán le. Keep the complements attached to their verbs with no pause: 看完 is one beat, not two words. Also note 打扫 (dǎsǎo, to clean) is 3rd + 3rd tone, so it surfaces as "dá sǎo" in natural speech — the first of many third-tone pairs you now produce automatically.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: ~~我把书看。~~ Right: 我把书看完了。 — 把 demands a result or 了 after the verb.
  • Wrong: ~~我把作业没做完。~~ Right: 我没把作业做完。 — the negative stands before 把.
  • Wrong: ~~我的书被拿走了他。~~ Right: 我的书被他拿走了。 — in 被 sentences the doer comes right after 被.
  • Wrong: ~~我把喜欢这本书。~~ Right: 我很喜欢这本书。 — feeling verbs like 喜欢 can never enter a 把 sentence.
Key idea. 把 moves the object forward and demands a result; 被 moves the receiver into the subject seat; complements (完、懂、错、来、去) attach every outcome to its verb, and 得/不 turns them into can/cannot.
Try it. Rewrite five plain sentences as 把 sentences (我看完了这本书 → 我把这本书看完了), then flip two of them into 被 sentences. Finish by answering aloud: 你看得懂中文报纸吗?

Exam Experience

Reading task. Read the classroom story, then answer.

— At the end of class, Xiaoming put his book on the desk and went out. When he came back, the book was gone. He was very worried. A classmate said: Your book was taken by Xiaohong; she wanted to return it to you, but you weren't there. Xiaoming was relieved to hear this.)

1) Where did Xiaoming put the book? 2) Why was the book gone when he returned? 3) What did Xiaohong want to do with the book?

Key: 1) On the desk (放在桌子上). 2) Xiaohong had taken it (被小红拿走了). 3) Return it to Xiaoming (把书还给他).

Multiple choice.

1) Choose the correct 把 sentence: A. 我把门开。 B. 我把门打开了。 C. 把门我打开了。 D. 我门把打开了。 Answer: B. 把 + object + verb + result (开 here is itself the result complement of 打) + 了. 2) 我的自行车被偷了 means… A. I stole a bike B. My bike was stolen C. I will steal a bike D. My bike is fast. Answer: B. 被 marks the passive; the bike is the receiver. 3) 我找不到钥匙 means… A. I didn't look for the keys B. I can't find the keys C. I found the keys D. I won't look. Answer: B. 找 + 不 + 到 is a potential complement: trying but unable to reach the result.

Guided writing. Tell a small disaster story in 6 sentences: something was lost or broken, what had been done with it, and how it ended — using one 把, one 被 and one potential complement. Model answer:

— Yesterday I left my phone in the classroom and went home. When I came back, the phone was gone. My phone had been taken by a classmate — he thought the phone was his. I searched for ages and couldn't find it. Later he returned the phone to me. I was very glad; from now on I'll keep my phone safe.)

Marking notes: one mark for a 把 sentence with a specific object and a result; one mark for a 被 sentence with the receiver as subject; one mark for a potential complement (得/不 + result) used in a natural context; one mark for a direction complement (回来/出去/拿走); one mark for story coherence across the six sentences. A bare verb after 把 loses the 把 mark even if the rest is correct.
