Mandarin Chinese

Lesson 7: Time, Aspect & Tense — 了, 过, 在, 会, 要

🎧 Audio narration for this lesson is coming soon.

English forces you to choose a tense every time you speak. Chinese refuses to play that game. Mandarin verbs never change, and the language talks about time in a completely different way: with time words (昨天, 今天, 明天), with aspect markers that say whether an action is finished, experienced or in progress, and with modal verbs like 会 (huì, will / know how to) and 要 (yào, want to / be about to). This lesson is the heart of Chinese grammar. Learn the difference between 了 (le — something is completed or has changed), 过 (guo — something has been experienced), 在 (zài — something is in progress) and 会/要, and you can place any action anywhere on the timeline.

Grammar patterns: aspect, not tense

MarkerPatternExampleMeaning
了 completionverb + 了我吃了饭。 (Wǒ chī le fàn.)I ate (the meal is done).
了 changesentence + 了下雨了。 (Xià yǔ le.)It's raining now (new situation).
没 + verb (past negative)没 + verb我没吃。 (Wǒ méi chī.)I didn't eat. (Never ~~没吃了~~!)
过 experienceverb + 过我去过北京。 (Wǒ qù guo Běijīng.)I have been to Beijing (at some time).
在 progress在/正在 + verb他在看书。 (Tā zài kàn shū.)He is reading.
会 future/skill会 + verb明天会下雨。 (Míngtiān huì xià yǔ.)It will rain tomorrow.
要 intention要 + verb我要去中国。 (Wǒ yào qù Zhōngguó.)I am going to / want to go to China.
还没 not yet还没 + verb他还没来。 (Tā hái méi lái.)He hasn't come yet.

Three rules protect you. First, the negative of a completed action is 没 + verb, and 了 disappears: 我没吃, never ~~我没吃了~~. Second, 过 talks about experience at an unspecified time — if you name the exact day, use 了 instead: 我昨天去了北京 (I went yesterday), not 我昨天去过北京 in careful style. Third, 了 at the end of the sentence can signal a *change*, not the past: 我懂了 (Wǒ dǒng le — I understand *now*) and 下雨了 are about a new state of affairs.

Example sentences

  • 我昨天看了电影。 (Wǒ zuótiān kàn le diànyǐng. — I watched a film yesterday.)
  • 你吃过中国菜吗? (Nǐ chī guo Zhōngguó cài ma? — Have you ever eaten Chinese food?)
  • 我没去过中国,但是我要去。 (Wǒ méi qù guo Zhōngguó, dànshì wǒ yào qù. — I have never been to China, but I am going to go.)
  • 现在他在做作业。 (Xiànzài tā zài zuò zuòyè. — Right now he is doing his homework.)
  • 明天我会去看他。 (Míngtiān wǒ huì qù kàn tā. — Tomorrow I will go and see him.)
  • 她已经来了。 (Tā yǐjīng lái le. — She has already arrived.)
  • 我还没吃饭。 (Wǒ hái méi chī fàn. — I haven't eaten yet.)
  • 他会说汉语。 (Tā huì shuō Hànyǔ. — He can speak Chinese [learned skill].)

Note the double life of 会: 他会说汉语 states a learned skill ("knows how to"), while 明天会下雨 predicts the future ("will"). Context decides, and both uses are everyday Mandarin.

Building the characters: time inside the characters

CharacterPinyinMeaningInside the character
昨zuó(as in 昨天 yesterday)日 (sun/day) + 乍
今jīn(as in 今天 today)人 under a cover: the present day
明míng(as in 明天 tomorrow)日 + 月: tomorrow is the next "bright" day
时shítime日 + 寸: time measured by the sun
间jiān(as in 时间 time)门 (gate) + 日: light through a gate
完wánto finish宀 (roof) + 元

The 日 radical runs through the whole time family — 昨、今、明、时、间 all reckon time by the sun, which is why Chinese calls a day 天 (tiān) and counts days rather than using separate words for dates at this level.

Tone practice: the aspect particles go neutral

Particles are almost always neutral-toned, and saying them lightly is a marker of fluent speech: 了 (le), 过 (guo), 吗 (ma), 呢 (ne), 吧 (ba), 的 (de). Drill these contrasts:

PairPinyinMeanings
要 / 药yào / yàoto want / medicine — identical; context rules
会 / 回huì / huíwill; know how / to return
在 / 再zài / zàiat; in progress / again — homophones
过 / 国guò (full form) / guóto pass / country — the particle 过 is neutral guo after verbs
完 / 玩wán / wánto finish / to play — same sound

Dialogue: weekend plans

  • A:你昨天做什么了? (Nǐ zuótiān zuò shénme le? — What did you do yesterday?)
  • B:我去看电影了。你呢? (Wǒ qù kàn diànyǐng le. Nǐ ne? — I went to see a film. And you?)
  • A:我在家学习汉语。你去过中国吗? (Wǒ zài jiā xuéxí Hànyǔ. Nǐ qù guo Zhōngguó ma? — I studied Chinese at home. Have you ever been to China?)
  • B:我没去过。我明年要去北京。 (Wǒ méi qù guo. Wǒ míngnián yào qù Běijīng. — I haven't. Next year I'm going to Beijing.)
  • A:太好了!你会说汉语吗? (Tài hǎo le! Nǐ huì shuō Hànyǔ ma? — Great! Can you speak Chinese?)
  • B:我会说一点儿。 (Wǒ huì shuō yìdiǎnr. — I can speak a little.)

Questions: 1) What did B do yesterday? 2) Has A been to China — and who answers that question, A or B? 3) When will B go to Beijing?

Answer key: 1) B watched a film (看电影了). 2) B answers: B has never been (没去过). 3) Next year (明年, míngnián).

Pronunciation notes for this lesson

Keep the aspect particles light and fast — 了 and 过 should never carry stress; native rhythm is "Wǒ chī-le fàn", with the energy on 吃 and 饭. The word 已经 (yǐjīng, already) triggers the third-tone rule in reverse: both syllables are full tones (3rd + 1st), so no change is needed. 一点儿 (yìdiǎnr, a little) is the r-coloured northern form; the southern 一点 (yìdiǎn) is equally standard. And be careful with 去年 (qùnián, last year) versus 去 (qù, to go): the compound keeps the 4th tone but means a time, not a movement.

Common mistakes

  • Wrong: ~~我没吃了饭。~~ Right: 我没吃饭。 — with 没, drop the 了.
  • Wrong: ~~我昨天去过北京。~~ (naming the exact day with 过) Right: 我昨天去了北京。 — exact past time takes 了; 过 is for unspecified experience.
  • Wrong: ~~他在看书了~~ for "he is reading now". Right: 他在看书。 — 在 marks progress; the final 了 would change the meaning to a new situation.
  • Wrong: ~~我要了一个朋友~~ confusion aside, the real trap is 要 vs 想: Right: 我想去中国 (I'd like to go — a wish) versus 我要去中国 (I'm going / I insist on going — a plan or demand). 要 is stronger.
Key idea. Chinese doesn't ask "when in the past?" — it asks "is it done (了), experienced (过), in progress (在), or intended (会/要)?" Learn aspect, and time takes care of itself.
Try it. Write six sentences about yourself: one with 了, one with 没, one with 过, one with 在, one with 会 and one with 要. Read them aloud, keeping 了 and 过 light and unstressed.

Exam Experience

Reading task. Read Xiaoli's diary entry, then answer.

昨天我很忙。我上午去学校学习汉语,下午和朋友去看电影。电影很好看。晚上我在家做作业。今天我没去学校,我在家休息。明天我要和妈妈去买东西。 (Zuótiān wǒ hěn máng. Wǒ shàngwǔ qù xuéxiào xuéxí Hànyǔ, xiàwǔ hé péngyou qù kàn diànyǐng. Diànyǐng hěn hǎokàn. Wǎnshang wǒ zài jiā zuò zuòyè. Jīntiān wǒ méi qù xuéxiào, wǒ zài jiā xiūxi. Míngtiān wǒ yào hé māma qù mǎi dōngxi. — Yesterday I was busy. In the morning I went to school to study Chinese, in the afternoon I went with a friend to see a film. The film was very good. In the evening I did homework at home. Today I didn't go to school; I'm resting at home. Tomorrow I'm going shopping with mum.)

1) What did Xiaoli do yesterday afternoon? 2) What is Xiaoli doing today? 3) What is the plan for tomorrow?

Key: 1) Saw a film with a friend (和朋友去看电影). 2) Resting at home (在家休息). 3) Going shopping with her mother (和妈妈去买东西).

Multiple choice.

1) 我没吃过日本菜 means… A. I won't eat Japanese food B. I have never eaten Japanese food C. I am not eating Japanese food now D. I don't like Japanese food. Answer: B. 没 + verb + 过 = "have never had the experience". 2) Choose the correct sentence: A. 我没去了。 B. 我去了。 C. 他在吃了。 D. 她已经来了吗了。 Answer: B. 我去了 (I went) is the clean completed-action sentence; A wrongly keeps 了 after 没. 3) 他正在做饭 means… A. He has cooked before B. He cooked yesterday C. He is cooking right now D. He will cook. Answer: C. 正在 marks an action in progress at this moment.

Guided writing. Write a short diary entry (5 sentences) about your last weekend: two things you did, one thing you didn't do, and one plan. Model answer:

上个周末我很忙。星期六我和朋友去看电影了,电影很有意思。星期天我在家学习汉语。我没去买东西。明天我要去学校上课。 (Shàng ge zhōumò wǒ hěn máng. Xīngqīliù wǒ hé péngyou qù kàn diànyǐng le, diànyǐng hěn yǒu yìsi. Xīngqītiān wǒ zài jiā xuéxí Hànyǔ. Wǒ méi qù mǎi dōngxi. Míngtiān wǒ yào qù xuéxiào shàngkè. — Last weekend I was busy. On Saturday I went to see a film with a friend; it was very interesting. On Sunday I studied Chinese at home. I didn't go shopping. Tomorrow I'm going to school for class.)

Marking notes: one mark for a time word opening the entry naturally; one mark for 了 used once correctly for a completed action; one mark for 没 + verb without 了; one mark for 在 or 正在 for an ongoing action; one mark for 要/会 expressing a genuine future plan. Aspect accuracy matters more than vocabulary range at this level.
