Lessons
Unit 1: Foundations — Script, Sounds & Basic Grammar
Lesson 1: The Gurmukhi Script — Vowels
Punjabi is written in Gurmukhi (meaning "from the Guru's mouth"), read left to right. Gurmukhi has 10 vowel letters, but only 3 are independent base letters — ੳ ਅ ੲ — which combine with vowel signs (ਲਗਾਂ, lagā̃) to make the full set. Every vowel sign must attach to one of these three carriers.
| Vowel | Name | Sound | Example |
| ਅ | mukta | a (short "uh") | ਅਨਾਰ (anār, pomegranate) |
| ਆ | kannā | ā (long "aa") | ਆਮ (ām, mango) |
| ਇ | sihārī | i (short) | ਇੱਟ (iṭṭ, brick) |
| ਈ | bihārī | ī (long) | ਈਦ (īd, Eid) |
| ਉ | auṅkaṛ | u (short) | ਉੱਲੂ (ullū, owl) |
| ਊ | dulaiṅkaṛ | ū (long) | ਊਠ (ūṭh, camel) |
| ਏ | lāvā̃ | e ("eh") | ਏਕਤਾ (ektā, unity) |
| ਐ | dulāvā̃ | ai ("ay") | ਐਨਕ (ainak, spectacles) |
| ਓ | hōṛā | o ("oh") | ਓਖਲੀ (okhlī, mortar) |
| ਔ | kanauṛā | au ("ow") | ਔਰਤ (aurat, woman) |
The three carriers: ੳ (ūṛā) carries ਉ ਊ ਓ; ਅ (airā) carries ਅ ਆ; ੲ (īṛī) carries ਇ ਈ ਏ ਐ. The nasal signs ੰ (bindī) and ਂ (ṭippī) nasalize vowels: ਸਿੰਘ (siṅgh, lion). The ਃ (visarg) appears in words like ਦੁੱਖ (dukkh, sorrow).
Worked example: Read ਮੁੰਡਾ (muṇḍā, boy): ਮ + ੁ (u sign) + ਂ (bindī nasalizes) + ਡ + ਾ (ā sign). Gurmukhi reads exactly as written — a beautifully phonetic script.
Try it yourself: write the 10 vowels five times each, saying the lagā̃ names aloud.

Lesson 2: Consonants & Pronunciation
Gurmukhi's 35 consonants follow the scientific arrangement. Punjabi's signature feature is its tones: the voiced aspirates (ਘ ਝ ਢ ਧ ਭ) historically became tones — high or low pitch on the following vowel. Don't worry about producing perfect tones yet; focus on clear consonants first.
| Group | Letters | Sounds |
| Vowels carriers | ੳ ਅ ੲ | ūṛā, airā, īṛī |
| ਸ ਹ | sa, ha |
| Velars | ਕ ਖ ਗ ਘ ਙ | ka kha ga gha ṅa |
| Palatals | ਚ ਛ ਜ ਝ ਞ | ca cha ja jha ña |
| Retroflexes | ਟ ਠ ਡ ਢ ਣ | ṭa ṭha ḍa ḍha ṇa |
| Dentals | ਤ ਥ ਦ ਧ ਨ | ta tha da dha na |
| Labials | ਪ ਫ ਬ ਭ ਮ | pa pha ba bha ma |
| Semivowels | ਯ ਰ ਲ ਵ ੜ | ya ra la va ṛa (flapped) |
Key notes: ੜ (ṛaṛā) is a flapped "r" as in ਮੁੰਡਾ; ਸ਼ (with a dot, bindi) writes the "sh" sound in loanwords like ਸ਼ਹਿਰ (shahir, city); ਖ਼ ਗ਼ ਜ਼ ਫ਼ ਲ਼ (with dots) write Perso-Arabic sounds. The addak (ੱ) doubles a consonant: ਪੱਤਾ (pattā, leaf) vs. ਪਤਾ (patā, address).
Worked example: ਪੱਤਾ vs ਪਤਾ — the addak ੱ doubles the ਤ, and the doubled consonant changes meaning completely (leaf vs. address). Always write and pronounce the doubling!
Try it yourself: recite ਕ to ਮ from memory, then write ਸ to ੜ.
Lesson 3: Core Vocabulary (20+ Words)

| ਨਵਾਂ | navā̃ | new |
| ਪਿਆਰ | piār | love |
| ਖ਼ੁਸ਼ੀ | khushī | happiness |
| ਵਕਤ / ਸਮਾਂ | vakat / samā̃ | time |
Worked example: Adjectives agree with gender: ਵੱਡਾ ਮੁੰਡਾ (vaḍḍā muṇḍā, big boy — masculine) vs. ਵੱਡੀ ਕੁੜੀ (vaḍḍī kuṛī, big girl — feminine). -ਾ → -ੀ for feminine.
Try it yourself: greet three people today with ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ.
Lesson 4: Basic Grammar — Gender, Plurals, Present Tense of ਹੋਣਾ
Plurals: masculine -ਾ nouns → -ੇ: ਮੁੰਡਾ → ਮੁੰਡੇ (muṇḍe, boys). Feminine -ੀ nouns → -ੀਆਂ: ਕੁੜੀ → ਕੁੜੀਆਂ (kuṛīā̃, girls).
ਹੋਣਾ (hoṇā, to be) — present tense: ਮੈਂ ਹਾਂ (maĩ hā̃, I am), ਤੂੰ ਹੈਂ (tū̃ haĩ, you are — familiar), ਉਹ ਹੈ (uh hai, he/she is), ਅਸੀਂ ਹਾਂ (asī̃ hā̃, we are), ਉਹ ਹਨ (uh han, they are), ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੋ (tusī̃ ho, you are — respectful).
Word order is SOV: ਮੈਂ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ (maĩ kitāb paṛhdā hā̃, "I book read" = I read a book). Verb endings agree with the subject's gender: masculine -ਦਾ, feminine -ਦੀ: ਉਹ ਪੜ੍ਹਦੀ ਹੈ (uh paṛhdī hai, she reads).
Postpositions follow nouns: ਵਿੱਚ (vicc, in), ਉੱਤੇ (utte, on), ਤੋਂ (tõ, from), ਨੂੰ (nū̃, to). Example: ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ (ghar vicc, in the house).
Worked example: "The girls are in school" → ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਨ (kuṛīā̃ sakūl vicc han). Plural feminine subject, postposition ਵਿੱਚ after ਸਕੂਲ, ਹਨ agreeing with plural.
Try it yourself: translate "I am happy", "You (respectful) are a teacher", "The boys are at home" into Punjabi.
Unit 2: Reading, Tenses & Grammar in Depth
Lesson 5: Reading Passage & Speaking Practice
Transliteration: "Merā nām Harprīt hai. Maĩ dasvī̃ jamāt vicc paṛhdā hā̃. Mere parivār vicc cār jīa han — mere māpe, merī bhaiṇ ate maĩ. Savere maĩ sakūl jāndā hā̃ ate shām nū̃ dostā̃ nāl kheḍdā hā̃. Mainū̃ kitābā̃ paṛhnīā̃ bahut pasand han."
Translation: "My name is Harpreet. I study in class 10. There are four people in my family — my parents, my sister, and I. In the morning I go to school and in the evening I play with friends. I like reading books very much."
Analysis: ਮੇਰਾ/ਮੇਰੀ/ਮੇਰੇ agree with the noun's gender/number; ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ shows masculine -ਦਾ agreement; ਮੈਨੂੰ…ਪਸੰਦ ਹਨ is the "to me … are liked" construction.
Speaking prompts:
- Introduce yourself: ਮੇਰਾ ਨਾਮ…ਹੈ। ਮੈਂ…ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ/ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹਾਂ। (30 seconds)
- Describe your family using ਮੇਰਾ/ਮੇਰੀ/ਮੇਰੇ.
- Talk about your routine: ਸਵੇਰੇ…, ਦੁਪਹਿਰੇ…, ਸ਼ਾਮ ਨੂੰ…
- Role-play: ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ! ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਹੋ? (Hello! How are you?) — ਮੈਂ ਠੀਕ ਹਾਂ (I'm fine).
- Read the passage aloud, focusing on retroflex (ਟ, ਡ, ਣ) and the addak doubling.
Try it yourself: write a 5-sentence paragraph about your family in Punjabi with transliteration.
Lesson 6: Postpositions & the Case System — ਨੇ, ਨੂੰ, ਤੋਂ, ਵਿੱਚ, ਦਾ
Punjabi uses postpositions after nouns. The most important: ਵਿੱਚ (vicc — in), ਤੇ / ਉੱਤੇ (te/utte — on), ਤੋਂ (tõ — from/by), ਨੂੰ (nū̃ — to — marks a specific object or recipient), ਨੇ (ne — marks the subject of a completed transitive action), and ਦਾ / ਦੀ / ਦੇ (dā/dī/de — of — agrees with the following noun). Examples: ਘਰ ਵਿੱਚ (ghar vicc — in the house), ਮੇਜ਼ ਤੇ (mez te — on the table), ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤੋਂ (Dillī tõ — from Delhi), ਮੈਨੂੰ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਦਿਓ (mainū̃ kitāb dio — give the book to me).
Postpositions trigger the oblique case: singular masculine nouns ending in -ā change to -e — ਮੁੰਡਾ (muṇḍā, boy) becomes ਮੁੰਡੇ (muṇḍe) in ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੂੰ (to the boy) and ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੇ (the boy [did]). Feminine nouns do not change in the singular: ਕੁੜੀ ਨੂੰ (kuṛī nū̃ — to the girl). In the plural, masculine -ā nouns take -iāṁ (ਮੁੰਡਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ) and feminine nouns take -āṁ (ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ). Punjabi is tonal: the letters ਘ, ਝ, ਢ, ਧ, ਭ and ਹ create a falling/rising tone on the following vowel — ਘੋੜਾ (kòṛā, horse) vs. ਕੋੜਾ (koṛā, whip) differ by tone, not just sound.
The ਨੇ construction (ergative): in the perfective past, the subject of a transitive verb takes ਨੇ, and the verb agrees with the object: ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ (muṇḍe ne kitāb paṛhī — "the boy read the book," verb feminine to agree with ਕਿਤਾਬ). Intransitive verbs never take ਨੇ: ਮੁੰਡਾ ਗਿਆ (muṇḍā giā — the boy went). If the object is marked with ਨੂੰ, the verb defaults to masculine singular: ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੇ ਕੁੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਦੇਖਿਆ (the boy saw the girl).
Worked example: "ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਸੀਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਪੱਤਰ ਲਿਖਿਆ" (Rām ne Sītā nū̃ pattar likhiā) = "Ram wrote a letter to Sita." ਨੇ marks Ram, ਨੂੰ marks Sita, and ਲਿਖਿਆ agrees with ਪੱਤਰ (masculine).
Try it yourself: translate into Punjabi — (1) The girl is in school. (2) The boy gave the book to the teacher. (3) I came from Delhi. Use ਵਿੱਚ, ਨੂੰ, ਤੋਂ, and ਨੇ correctly.
Lesson 7: Past & Future Tenses
Punjabi past tense has several shades. The simple past (perfective) uses the stem + -iā/-ī/-e/-īāṁ: ਮੈਂ ਖਾਣਾ ਖਾਧਾ (maĩ khāṇā khādhā — I ate food), ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ (us ne kitāb paṛhī — she read the book). Remember ਨੇ for transitive perfective verbs (Lesson 6). The habitual past uses the imperfective participle + ਸੀ (sī): ਮੈਂ ਰੋਜ਼ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਸੀ (maĩ roz skūl jāndā sī — I used to go to school every day). The continuous past uses ਰਿਹਾ + ਸੀ: ਉਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ (uh paṛh rihā sī — he was reading).
The future adds -āṁgā/-egī/-egā/-āṁge/-oge/-ṇge: ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ (maĩ jāvāṁgā — I will go, male speaker), ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ (maĩ jāvāṁgī — I will go, female speaker), ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੇ (asī̃ jāvāṁge — we will go), ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਓਗੇ (tusī̃ jāoge — you will go). For plans, speakers often use the present continuous: ਮੈਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ (I'm going to Delhi tomorrow), like English "I'm going tomorrow."
Time expressions: ਕੱਲ੍ਹ (kallh) means both "yesterday" and "tomorrow" — tense tells you which! ਪਰਸੋਂ (parsõ) = day after tomorrow / day before yesterday; ਅੱਜ (ajj) = today; ਹੁਣੇ (huṇe) = right now; ਫਿਰ (phir) = then/again; ਕਦੇ-ਕਦੇ (kade-kade) = sometimes; ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ (hameśā) = always.
Worked example: "ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਫ਼ਿਲਮ ਦੇਖੀ। ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਮੈਂ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾਵਾਂਗਾ।" = "Yesterday I saw a film. Tomorrow I will go to the market." Same word ਕੱਲ੍ਹ, two meanings — tense decides.
Try it yourself: write five sentences about last weekend (past tenses) and five about next weekend (future), using at least one ਨੇ sentence and one ਸੀ sentence.
Lesson 8: Adjectives, Comparatives & Adverbs
Punjabi adjectives come in two families. Variable adjectives end in -ā and change with the noun: ਚੰਗਾ ਮੁੰਡਾ (caṅgā muṇḍā — good boy), ਚੰਗੀ ਕੁੜੀ (caṅgī kuṛī — good girl), ਚੰਗੇ ਮੁੰਡੇ (caṅge muṇḍe — good boys), and before a postposition ਚੰਗੇ ਮੁੰਡੇ ਨੂੰ (to the good boy). Invariable adjectives never change: ਸੋਹਣਾ (sohṇā — beautiful, variable) vs. ਸਾਫ਼ (sāf — clean), ਗਰਮ (garam — hot). Colors: ਲਾਲ (lāl — red), ਨੀਲਾ (nīlā — blue), ਹਰਾ (harā — green), ਪੀਲਾ (pīlā — yellow), ਚਿੱਟਾ (ciṭṭā — white), ਕਾਲ਼ਾ (kāḷā — black). Note ਨੀਲਾ and ਪੀਲਾ are variable (ਨੀਲੀ ਸਾੜ੍ਹੀ), while ਲਾਲ is invariable.
Comparatives use ਤੋਂ (tõ — than) + ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ (ziādā — more) or ਘੱਟ (ghaṭṭ — less): ਦਿੱਲੀ ਮੁੰਬਈ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਡਾ ਹੈ (Dillī Mumbaī tõ vaḍḍā hai — Delhi is bigger than Mumbai). Superlative: ਸਭ ਤੋਂ (sabh tõ — of all): ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਹੈ (This is the best school). The suffix -ਵਾਲਾ (-vālā) turns nouns into "the one with/of": ਚਾਹਵਾਲਾ (cāhvālā — tea seller), ਲਾਲ ਵਾਲਾ (lāl vālā — the red one).
Adverbs: ਹੌਲੀ (haulī — slowly), ਤੇਜ਼ (tez — fast), ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ (caṅgī tarhāṁ — well), ਇੱਥੇ/ਉੱਥੇ (itthe/utthe — here/there), ਕਿੱਥੇ (kitthe — where), ਹੁਣ/ਤਦ (huṇ/tad — now/then), ਬਹੁਤ (bahut — very/much). ਬਹੁਤ intensifies: ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗਾ (very good), ਬਹੁਤ ਤੇਜ਼ (very fast).
Worked example: "ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੋਂ ਲੰਮੀ ਹੈ, ਪਰ ਮੈਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਤੇਜ਼ ਦੌੜਦਾ ਹਾਂ।" = "My sister is taller than me, but I run faster than her." Two comparatives with ਤੋਂ.
Try it yourself: compare three family members (height, age, speed) using ਤੋਂ, ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ, and ਸਭ ਤੋਂ, and describe how each does something using an adverb.
Unit 3: Politeness, Complex Sentences & Travel
Lesson 9: Pronouns, Honorifics & Politeness
Punjabi has two levels of "you." ਤੂੰ (tū̃) is intimate — small children, very close friends, prayer; rude to strangers. ਤੁਸੀਂ (tusī̃) is respectful — elders, teachers, strangers, and also plural "you." Verbs agree: ਤੂੰ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈਂ (tū̃ jāndā haĩ), ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ (tusī̃ jānde ho). Note ਤੁਸੀਂ takes plural verb forms even for one person. Elders are referred to in plural: ਦਾਦਾ ਜੀ ਆ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ (Dādā jī ā rahe han — Grandfather is coming).
Possessive pronouns: ਮੇਰਾ/ਮੇਰੀ/ਮੇਰੇ (merā — my), ਤੇਰਾ (terā — your, tū̃), ਤੁਹਾਡਾ (tuhāḍā — your, tusī̃), ਉਸਦਾ (usdā — his/her), ਇਹਦਾ/ਓਹਦਾ (ehdā/ohdā — this/that person's), ਸਾਡਾ (sāḍā — our), ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ (uhnāṁ dā — their). They agree like adjectives: ਮੇਰਾ ਭਰਾ (merā bharā — my brother), ਮੇਰੀ ਭੈਣ (merī bhaiṇ — my sister), ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ (mere dost — my friends). Demonstratives: ਇਹ/ਏਹ (eh — this/these), ਉਹ/ਓਹ (oh — that/those). ਇਹ ਕੀ ਹੈ? (What is this?) ਉਹ ਕੌਣ ਹੈ? (Who is that?)
Polite speech: add ਜੀ (jī) after a name — ਰਾਮ ਜੀ, ਸ਼ਰਮਾ ਜੀ. Answer "yes" politely as ਜੀ ਹਾਂ (jī hāṁ). Use ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ (kirpā karke — please), ਧੰਨਵਾਦ (dhannvād — thank you), ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰੋ (māf karo — excuse me/forgive me), and ਸਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ (Sat Srī Akāl) as the traditional Sikh greeting, or ਨਮਸਤੇ (namaste). The respectful imperative uses -o: ਆਓ (āo — please come), ਬੈਠੋ (baiṭho — please sit), vs. intimate ਆ (ā).
Worked example — two levels, one request: To a child: "ਪਾਣੀ ਲਿਆ।" To a teacher: "ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਪਾਣੀ ਲਿਆਓ।" — "Bring water," in intimate and respectful registers.
Try it yourself: rewrite this dialogue twice — once between two close friends (ਤੂੰ), once between a student and a teacher (ਤੁਸੀਂ): "Where are you going? I am going to school. Please come with me."
Lesson 10: Complex Sentences — ਕਿਉਂਕਿ, ਜੇਕਰ, ਜਦੋਂ…ਤਦੋਂ, ਜੋ…ਉਹ
Fluent Punjabi links clauses with paired conjunctions. ਕਿਉਂਕਿ (kiũki — because): ਮੈਂ ਸਕੂਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਗਿਆ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਬਿਮਾਰ ਸੀ (I didn't go to school because I was ill). ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ (jekar…tāṁ — if…then): ਜੇਕਰ ਮੀਂਹ ਪਵੇਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਘਰੇ ਰਹਾਂਗੇ (If it rains, we will stay home). ਜਦੋਂ…ਤਦੋਂ (jadõ…tadõ — when…then): ਜਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਛੋਟਾ ਸੀ ਤਦੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਪਿੰਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਸੀ (When I was small, I lived in a village). ਜੋ…ਉਹ (jo…uh — who/which…that): ਜੋ ਮੁੰਡਾ ਉੱਥੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੈ ਉਹ ਮੇਰਾ ਦੋਸਤ ਹੈ (The boy who is standing there is my friend).
Indirect speech uses ਕਿ (ki — that): ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਵੇਗਾ (He said that he would come). Purpose: ਤਾਂ ਜੋ (tāṁ jo — so that): ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੋ ਸਕਾਂ (I study so that I can pass). Although: ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ (hālāṁki): ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਥੱਕਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ ਸੀ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕੰਮ ਕੀਤਾ (Although he was tired, he still worked). Ability: ਸਕਣਾ (sakṇā — can): ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦਾ ਹਾਂ (I can speak Punjabi). Obligation: ਚਾਹੀਦਾ (cāhīdā — should): ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ (You should study). Want: ਚਾਹੁਣਾ: ਮੈਂ ਡਾਕਟਰ ਬਣਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ (I want to become a doctor).
Worked example: "ਜੋ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸਫਲ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਸਫਲਤਾ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਲਦੀ ਹੈ।" = "Whoever works hard succeeds, because success comes from hard work." A relative clause, a main clause, and a reason clause in one sentence.
Try it yourself: write six complex sentences — one each with ਕਿਉਂਕਿ, ਜੇਕਰ, ਜਦੋਂ…ਤਦੋਂ, ਜੋ…ਉਹ, ਤਾਂ ਜੋ, and ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ — about your school life.
Lesson 11: Culture & Literature — Gurus, Heer, Festivals & Two Registers
Festivals: ਵਿਸਾਖੀ (Vaisakhi, April) — the Punjabi harvest festival and, for Sikhs, the anniversary of the founding of the Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh in 1699; celebrated with nagar kirtan processions, bhangra dancing, and fairs. ਲੋਹੜੀ (Lohri, January) — bonfires, peanuts, and sesame sweets welcome the end of winter. ਦਿਵਾਲੀ (Diwali), ਗੁਰਪੁਰਬ (Gurpurab, the Gurus' birthdays), and ਹੋਲਾ ਮਹੱਲਾ (Hola Mahalla) are also widely celebrated.
Literature: Punjabi literature begins with the devotional poetry of Guru Nanak (1469–1539) and the Sikh Gurus, preserved in the Guru Granth Sahib — the central scripture of Sikhism, written largely in Punjabi. The Sufi poet Bulleh Shah (1680–1757) wrote verses of love and spiritual longing that are still sung today. Waris Shah's Heer (1766) is the great Punjabi romantic epic — the tragic love story of Heer and Ranjha, often called the "Romeo and Juliet of Punjab." Modern Punjabi poetry includes Amrita Pritam, whose poem "Ajj Aakhaan Waris Shah Nu" mourns the violence of Partition. Bhangra music and dance, born in Punjabi harvest celebrations, are now performed worldwide.
Two registers: Punjabi exists in Gurmukhi script (used in Indian Punjab) and Shahmukhi script (Perso-Arabic, used in Pakistani Punjab) — same language, two writing systems. Spoken Punjabi mixes freely with Hindi and English in daily life (ਮੈਨੂੰ ਥੋੜ੍ਹਾ ਟਾਈਮ ਦਿਓ), while formal and religious Punjabi prefers Perso-Arabic and Sanskrit-derived vocabulary. A fluent speaker moves between both.
Worked example — register: Colloquial: "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ, ਕੁਝ ਖਾਣ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਓ।" Formal: "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ, ਕੁਝ ਖਾਣ ਲਈ ਦਿਓ।" Same meaning ("I am hungry, give me something to eat"). Use the formal version in essays, the colloquial one with friends.
Try it yourself: summarize the story of Heer and Ranjha in 8–10 Punjabi sentences, and write one paragraph in Punjabi about what Vaisakhi celebrates.
Lesson 12: Travel & Directions — ਯਾਤਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਰਸਤਾ
Travel Punjabi starts with getting around. Key words: ਯਾਤਰਾ (yātrā, journey), ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ (sṭeśan, station), ਟਿਕਟ (ṭikaṭ, ticket), ਗੱਡੀ (gaḍḍī, vehicle/train), ਹਵਾਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ (havāī jahāz, aeroplane), ਹੋਟਲ (hoṭal, hotel), ਕਮਰਾ (kamrā, room), ਰਸਤਾ (rastā, road/way), ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ (bāzār, market), ਪਤਾ (patā, address). To ask directions: ਇਹ ਰਸਤਾ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ? (Ih rastā kithe jāndā hai, Where does this road go?), ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਕਿੰਨੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ? (Sṭeśan kinnī dūr hai, How far is the station?), ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਜਾਣਾ ਹੈ। (Mainū̃ Dillī jāṇā hai, I have to go to Delhi.)
Giving directions: ਸਿੱਧਾ ਜਾਓ (siddhā jāo, go straight), ਸੱਜੇ ਮੁੜੋ (sajje muṛo, turn right), ਖੱਬੇ ਮੁੜੋ (khabbe muṛo, turn left), ਚੌਂਕ 'ਤੇ (caunk te, at the crossing), ਮੋੜ 'ਤੇ (moṛ te, at the turn), ਨੇੜੇ (neṛe, nearby), ਦੂਰ (dūr, far), ਸਾਹਮਣੇ (sāhmaṇe, in front of). Direction verbs take the respectful imperative -o with strangers. Buying tickets: ਇੱਕ ਟਿਕਟ ਦਿਓ। (Ikk ṭikaṭ dio, Give me one ticket.), ਕਿੰਨੇ ਦਾ ਹੈ? (Kinne dā hai, How much is it?), ਗੱਡੀ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਵਜੇ ਆਵੇਗੀ? (Gaḍḍī kinne vaje āvegī, At what time will the train come?)
Place words: ਕੋਲ (kol, near), ਸਾਹਮਣੇ (sāhmaṇe, in front of), ਪਿੱਛੇ (picche, behind), ਵਿਚਕਾਰ (vicakār, between), ਉੱਤੇ (utte, above), ਹੇਠਾਂ (heṭhā̃, below), ਤੱਕ (takk, up to / as far as): ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਤੱਕ ਕਿੰਨਾ ਕਿਰਾਇਆ ਹੈ? (How much is the fare up to the station?)
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਯਾਤਰਾ | yātrā | journey, travel |
| ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ | sṭeśan | station |
| ਟਿਕਟ | ṭikaṭ | ticket |
| ਗੱਡੀ | gaḍḍī | vehicle, train, car |
| ਹਵਾਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ | havāī jahāz | aeroplane |
| ਹੋਟਲ | hoṭal | hotel |
| ਕਮਰਾ | kamrā | room |
| ਰਸਤਾ | rastā | road, way |
| ਚੌਂਕ | caunk | crossing, intersection |
| ਕਿਰਾਇਆ | kirāiā | fare, rent |
| ਸੱਜੇ | sajje | to the right |
| ਖੱਬੇ | khabbe | to the left |
Worked example 1: ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰੋ, ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ? (Māf karo, sṭeśan kivẽ jāvā̃?) = "Excuse me, how do I get to the station?" — ਸਿੱਧਾ ਜਾਓ, ਫਿਰ ਚੌਂਕ 'ਤੇ ਸੱਜੇ ਮੁੜੋ। ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ। (Go straight, then turn right at the crossing. The station is right in front.)
Worked example 2: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਦੋ ਰਾਤਾਂ ਲਈ ਇੱਕ ਕਮਰਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ। (Mainū̃ do rātā̃ laī ikk kamrā cāhīdā hai.) = "I need a room for two nights." ਲਈ (laī, for) marks purpose/duration.
Worked example 3: ਸਕੂਲ ਮੰਦਰ ਦੇ ਪਿੱਛੇ ਹੈ, ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਦੇ ਕੋਲ। (Sakūl mandar de picche hai, bāzār de kol.) = "The school is behind the temple, near the market." Two place postpositions in one sentence.
Try it yourself: write a 6-line dialogue asking for directions from the station to a hotel, using ਸਿੱਧਾ, ਸੱਜੇ, ਖੱਬੇ, ਚੌਂਕ, ਕਿੰਨੀ ਦੂਰ. Answers: a correct dialogue includes a polite question (ਮਾਫ਼ ਕਰੋ…), two direction steps, and a distance question with answer (ਕਿੰਨੀ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ? — ਨੇੜੇ ਹੀ ਹੈ।).
Real-world application — at the hotel: Check in: (Hello, my name is… I had booked a room. How much is the room? At what time is breakfast served?) Practise this check-in speech until it flows.
Vocabulary: ਯਾਤਰਾ (yātrā, journey), ਸਟੇਸ਼ਨ (sṭeśan, station), ਟਿਕਟ (ṭikaṭ, ticket), ਗੱਡੀ (gaḍḍī, vehicle/train), ਹਵਾਈ ਜਹਾਜ਼ (havāī jahāz, aeroplane), ਹੋਟਲ (hoṭal, hotel), ਕਮਰਾ (kamrā, room), ਰਸਤਾ (rastā, road), ਚੌਂਕ (caunk, crossing), ਕਿਰਾਇਆ (kirāiā, fare), ਸੱਜੇ (sajje, to the right), ਖੱਬੇ (khabbe, to the left).
Unit 4: Daily Life, Health & Conditionals
Lesson 13: Food, Market & Cooking — ਖਾਣਾ, ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਕਾਉਣਾ
Ordering food: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਥਾਲੀ ਚਾਹੀਦੀ ਹੈ। (Mainū̃ ikk thālī cāhīdī hai, I want a thali.), ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤਿੱਖਾ ਹੈ? (Kī ih tikkhā hai, Is this spicy?), ਪਾਣੀ ਲਿਆਓ, ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ। (Pāṇī liāo, kirpā karke, Bring water, please.), ਬਿੱਲ ਲਿਆਓ। (Bill liāo, Bring the bill.)
At the market: ਇਹ ਕਿੰਨੇ ਦਾ ਹੈ? Real-world application — class discussion: Debate with a partner: ਕੀ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕਲਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਫ਼ੋਨ ਵਰਤਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ? One argues yes (ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ, ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ…), the other no (ਮੈਂ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਹਾਂ, ਕਿਉਂਕਿ…). Use at least three opinion frames each.

Lesson 16: Conditionals & Wishes — ਸ਼ਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਇੱਛਾਵਾਂ
Punjabi conditionals use ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ (jekar…tāṁ, if…then) with different verb forms for different likelihoods. (1) Real/possible: ਜੇਕਰ + present, future — ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਪੜ੍ਹੇਂਗਾ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੋਵੇਂਗਾ। (Jekar tū̃ paṛhẽgā tāṁ pās hovẽgā, If you study, you will pass.) (2) Hypothetical: ਜੇਕਰ + ਹੁੰਦਾ, conditional — ਜੇਕਰ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋਲ ਪੈਸੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਘੁੰਮਦਾ। (Jekar mere kol paise hunde tāṁ maĩ dunīā ghummdā, If I had money, I would travel the world.) The hypothetical uses the imperfective participle + ਹੁੰਦਾ/ਹੁੰਦੀ/ਹੁੰਦੇ in the result clause.
Wishes: ਰੱਬ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ… (Rabb kare ki…, May God grant that…): ਰੱਬ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਸਫ਼ਲ ਹੋਵੇਂ। (May God grant that you succeed.) Purpose — ਤਾਂ ਜੋ (tāṁ jo, so that) takes the subjunctive-like -ੇ form: ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਜੋ ਮੈਂ ਪਾਸ ਹੋ ਸਕਾਂ। (I study so that I can pass.) Polite suggestions — ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ… (Caṅgā hovegā je…, It would be good if…): ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ ਤੂੰ ਆ ਜਾਵੇਂ। Possibility: ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (Ho sakdā hai ki…, It is possible that…): ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅੱਜ ਆਵੇ। (It is possible that he will come today.)
Wishes with ਕਾਸ਼: ਕਾਸ਼ (kāś, if only / I wish) expresses unreal wishes with the hypothetical form: ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੈਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ! (Kāś maĩ Dillī vicc rahindā, If only I lived in Delhi!) ਕਾਸ਼ ਮੀਂਹ ਨਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ! (If only it hadn't rained!) The pattern ਕਾਸ਼ + hypothetical is Punjabi's version of "if only".
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ | jekar…tāṁ | if…then |
| ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ | maĩ jāvā̃ | I may go (subjunctive-like) |
| ਉਹ ਜਾਵੇ | uh jāve | he may go |
| ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਈਏ | asī̃ jāīe | we may go |
| ਜੇਕਰ ਪੈਸੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਤਾਂ… | jekar paise hunde tāṁ… | If there were money, then… |
| ਤਾਂ ਜੋ | tāṁ jo | so that |
| ਕਾਸ਼ | kāś | if only, I wish |
| ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… | ho sakdā hai ki… | It is possible that… |
| ਰੱਬ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ… | rabb kare ki… | May God grant that… |
| ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ… | caṅgā hovegā je… | It would be good if… |
Worked example 1: ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਪਾਠ ਖੇਡਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ। = "If I were a teacher, I would explain lessons through games." Hypothetical ਜੇਕਰ + ਹੁੰਦਾ + conditional participle ਸਮਝਾਉਂਦਾ.
Worked example 2: ਮੈਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੱਲ ਕਰੇਂ। = "I want you to speak in Punjabi." A wish with a different subject takes the -ੇ form (ਕਰੇਂ); with the same subject it takes the infinitive (ਮੈਂ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੱਲ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੁੰਦਾ ਹਾਂ).
Worked example 3: ਜੇਕਰ ਮੈਂ ਪੜ੍ਹਾਈ ਨਾ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ਵਿੱਚ ਪਾਸ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ। = "If I had not studied, I would not have passed the exam." Past hypothetical: ਜੇਕਰ + perfect participle + ਹੁੰਦਾ in both clauses.
Try it yourself: complete with the right form: Then write two hypothetical sentences about your dream life.
Real-world application — "what if" interview: Interview a partner: ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਕਿਸੇ ਵੀ ਦੇਸ਼ ਵਿੱਚ ਰਹਿ ਸਕੇਂ ਤਾਂ ਕਿੱਥੇ ਰਹੇਂਗਾ? ਜੇਕਰ ਤੂੰ ਮਸ਼ਹੂਰ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਤਾਂ ਕੀ ਕਰਦਾ? Answer in full sentences with the ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ hypothetical pattern.
Vocabulary: ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ (jekar…tāṁ, if…then), ਮੈਂ ਜਾਵਾਂ (maĩ jāvā̃, I may go), ਉਹ ਜਾਵੇ (uh jāve, he may go), ਅਸੀਂ ਜਾਈਏ (asī̃ jāīe, we may go), ਜੇਕਰ ਪੈਸੇ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਤਾਂ… (If there were money…), ਤਾਂ ਜੋ (tāṁ jo, so that), ਕਾਸ਼ (kāś, if only), ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (It is possible that…), ਰੱਬ ਕਰੇ ਕਿ… (May God grant that…), ਚੰਗਾ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ ਜੇ… (It would be good if…).
Unit 5: Fluency, Culture & Literature
Lesson 17: Passive Voice, Reported Speech & Formal Writing — ਕਰਮਵਾਚ, ਅਪ੍ਰਤੱਖ ਕਥਨ ਅਤੇ ਰਸਮੀ ਲਿਖਾਈ
Passive voice: Punjabi forms the passive with verb stem + ਜਾਣਾ (jāṇā, to go): ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ। (Kitāb paṛhī jāndī hai, The book is read.), ਇਹ ਘਰ 1990 ਵਿੱਚ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ। (Ih ghar 1990 vicc baṇāiā giā sī, This house was built in 1990.) The agent, if mentioned, takes ਵੱਲੋਂ / ਦੁਆਰਾ (vallõ / duārā, by): ਇਹ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਵਾਰਿਸ ਸ਼ਾਹ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਿਖੀ ਗਈ। (This poem was written by Waris Shah.) The passive is common in news and formal writing: ਦੱਸਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (It is reported that…).
Reported speech: ਕਹਿਣਾ ਕਿ (kahiṇā ki, to say that) shifts tenses. Direct: "ਮੈਂ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ।" → Reported: ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ। (He said that he was going to the market.) Direct: "ਮੈਂ ਕੱਲ੍ਹ ਆਵਾਂਗਾ।" → ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਅਗਲੇ ਦਿਨ ਆਵੇਗਾ। (He said he would come the next day.) Time words shift: ਅੱਜ → ਉਸ ਦਿਨ (that day), ਕੱਲ੍ਹ → ਅਗਲੇ ਦਿਨ (the next day), ਇੱਥੇ → ਉੱਥੇ (there). Questions: ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਆ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈਂ ਕਿ ਨਹੀਂ। (He asked whether you are coming or not.)
Formal writing: letters use ਆਦਰਯੋਗ (ādaryog, respected), ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ (satikār sahit, with respectful greetings), ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਪੱਤਰ… ਲਈ ਲਿਖ ਰਿਹਾ ਹਾਂ। (I am writing this letter for…), and closings ਭਵਦੀ (bhavadī, yours sincerely) / ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸੀ (tuhāḍā viśvāsī, yours faithfully). Formal writing uses ਤੁਸੀਂ forms and respectful vocabulary, no slang. Essays use connectors: ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ, ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ, ਇਸ ਲਈ, ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ.
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ | kitāb paṛhī jāndī hai | The book is read |
| ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ | baṇāiā giā sī | was built |
| ਵੱਲੋਂ | vallõ | by (agent in passive) |
| ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ… | us ne kihā ki… | He said that… |
| ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿ… | us ne pucchiā ki… | He asked whether… |
| ਆਦਰਯੋਗ | ādaryog | respected (letter opening) |
| ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ | satikār sahit | with respectful greetings |
| ਭਵਦੀ | bhavadī | yours sincerely |
| ਫਿਰ ਵੀ | phir vī | nevertheless |
| ਇਸ ਲਈ | is laī | therefore |
Worked example 1: Active: ਲੇਖਕ ਨੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਲਿਖਿਆ। → Passive: ਨਾਵਲ ਲੇਖਕ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ। The participle ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ agrees with masculine ਨਾਵਲ.
Worked example 2: Direct: "ਮੈਨੂੰ ਅੱਜ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ।" → Reported: ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦਿਨ ਪੜ੍ਹਨਾ ਹੈ। ਅੱਜ → ਉਸ ਦਿਨ; pronoun shifts to the reporter's viewpoint.
= "Respected Principal, with respectful greetings. I am writing this letter for new books in the library."
Try it yourself: (1) Convert to passive: (3) Write a 4-line formal letter requesting information.
Real-world application — news retelling: Read a short news paragraph, then retell it to a partner using reported speech: ਖ਼ਬਰਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਿਹਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ…, ਮੰਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ…, ਵਿਗਿਆਨੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਕਹਿਣਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ…
Vocabulary: ਕਿਤਾਬ ਪੜ੍ਹੀ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ (kitāb paṛhī jāndī hai, The book is read), ਬਣਾਇਆ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ (baṇāiā giā sī, was built), ਵੱਲੋਂ (vallõ, by), ਉਸ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ… (He said that…), ਉਸ ਨੇ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ ਕਿ… (He asked whether…), ਆਦਰਯੋਗ (ādaryog, respected), ਸਤਿਕਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ (satikār sahit, with respectful greetings), ਭਵਦੀ (bhavadī, yours sincerely), ਫਿਰ ਵੀ (phir vī, nevertheless), ਇਸ ਲਈ (is laī, therefore).
Lesson 18: Idioms & Proverbs — ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਾਵਤਾਂ
Idioms (ਮੁਹਾਵਰੇ, muhāvare) make speech colourful. Body idioms: ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ (akkhā̃ dā tārā, apple of one's eye — literally "star of the eyes"), ਨੱਕ ਕੱਟਣਾ (nakk kaṭṭaṇā, to be disgraced — "nose cut"), ਦੰਦ ਖੱਟੇ ਕਰਨਾ (dand khaṭṭe karnā, to defeat soundly — "to sour the teeth"), ਹੱਥ ਵਟਾਉਣਾ (hatth vaṭāuṇā, to lend a hand), ਢਿੱਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੌੜਨਾ (ḍhiḍḍ vicc cūhe dauṛnā, to be very hungry — "rats running in the stomach"), ਸਿਰ 'ਤੇ ਚੜ੍ਹਾਉਣਾ (sir te caṛhāuṇā, to spoil someone — "to put on the head"). Everyday idioms: ਦਿਲ ਜਿੱਤਣਾ (dil jittaṇā, to win hearts), ਗੱਲ ਬਣਨਾ (gall baṇnā, for things to work out), ਹਵਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਡਣਾ (havā vicc uḍḍṇā, to be arrogant — "to fly in the air").
Proverbs (ਕਹਾਵਤਾਂ, kahāvatā̃): ਜਿਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਤਿਹੀ ਭਰਨੀ। (Jihī karnī tihī bharnī, As you sow, so shall you reap.) ਮਿਹਨਤ ਦਾ ਫਲ ਮਿੱਠਾ। (Mihnat dā phal miṭṭhā, The fruit of hard work is sweet.) ਬੂੰਦ ਬੂੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਘੜਾ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈ। (Būnd būnd nāl ghaṛā bhardā hai, Drop by drop the pot fills — small efforts add up.) ਸਿਹਤ ਹੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਹੈ। (Sihat hī daulat hai, Health is wealth.) ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ। (Parāhuṇā rabb dā rūp, The guest is the form of God.)
Using idioms well: one idiom in a paragraph is elegant; five in a row sounds comic. Idioms belong in speech, stories, and essays with a light touch — never in formal applications. When you meet a new idiom, learn (a) its literal words, (b) its real meaning, (c) one example sentence — exactly the pattern in this lesson.
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ | akkhā̃ dā tārā | apple of one's eye |
| ਨੱਕ ਕੱਟਣਾ | nakk kaṭṭaṇā | to be disgraced |
| ਦੰਦ ਖੱਟੇ ਕਰਨਾ | dand khaṭṭe karnā | to defeat soundly |
| ਹੱਥ ਵਟਾਉਣਾ | hatth vaṭāuṇā | to lend a hand |
| ਢਿੱਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੌੜਨਾ | ḍhiḍḍ vicc cūhe dauṛnā | to be very hungry |
| ਦਿਲ ਜਿੱਤਣਾ | dil jittaṇā | to win hearts |
| ਜਿਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਤਿਹੀ ਭਰਨੀ | jihī karnī tihī bharnī | As you sow, so shall you reap |
| ਬੂੰਦ ਬੂੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਘੜਾ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈ | būnd būnd nāl ghaṛā bhardā hai | Drop by drop the pot fills |
| ਸਿਹਤ ਹੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਹੈ | sihat hī daulat hai | Health is wealth |
| ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ | parāhuṇā rabb dā rūp | The guest is the form of God |
Worked example 1: ਮੈਨੂੰ ਬਹੁਤ ਭੁੱਖ ਲੱਗੀ ਹੈ, ਢਿੱਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੌੜ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ। = "I am very hungry — rats are running in my stomach." The idiom replaces a plain statement with a vivid picture.
Worked example 2: ਰਾਮ ਨੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਦਿਲ ਜਿੱਤ ਲਿਆ, ਜਿਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਤਿਹੀ ਭਰਨੀ। = "Ram won everyone's heart with his hard work — as you sow, so shall you reap." Proverb as a closing comment on a story.
Worked example 3: ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਦਦ ਕਰੋ, ਹੱਥ ਵਟਾਓ। = "Please help me, lend a hand." The polite imperative keeps the idiom respectful.
Try it yourself: match the idiom to its meaning: (1) ਨੱਕ ਕੱਟਣਾ — (a) to be disgraced. Answer: (a). (2) ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ — (b) a much-loved person. Answer: (b). (3) ਦੰਦ ਖੱਟੇ ਕਰਨਾ — (c) to defeat soundly. Answer: (c). Then write two sentences using any two idioms.
Real-world application — idiom journal: Watch a Punjabi film scene and write down every idiom you hear. Next class, explain two of them to a partner in Punjabi — first the literal words, then the real meaning.
Vocabulary: ਅੱਖਾਂ ਦਾ ਤਾਰਾ (akkhā̃ dā tārā, apple of one's eye), ਨੱਕ ਕੱਟਣਾ (nakk kaṭṭaṇā, to be disgraced), ਦੰਦ ਖੱਟੇ ਕਰਨਾ (dand khaṭṭe karnā, to defeat soundly), ਹੱਥ ਵਟਾਉਣਾ (hatth vaṭāuṇā, to lend a hand), ਢਿੱਡ ਵਿੱਚ ਚੂਹੇ ਦੌੜਨਾ (ḍhiḍḍ vicc cūhe dauṛnā, to be very hungry), ਦਿਲ ਜਿੱਤਣਾ (dil jittaṇā, to win hearts), ਜਿਹੀ ਕਰਨੀ ਤਿਹੀ ਭਰਨੀ (As you sow, so shall you reap), ਬੂੰਦ ਬੂੰਦ ਨਾਲ ਘੜਾ ਭਰਦਾ ਹੈ (Drop by drop the pot fills), ਸਿਹਤ ਹੀ ਦੌਲਤ ਹੈ (Health is wealth), ਪਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਰੱਬ ਦਾ ਰੂਪ (The guest is the form of God).
Lesson 19: Conversation — Debate, Interview & Storytelling — ਗੱਲਬਾਤ: ਬਹਿਸ, ਇੰਟਰਵਿਊ ਅਤੇ ਕਹਾਣੀ
Fluent conversation needs connectors that link ideas: ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ (is tõ ilāvā, besides), ਫਿਰ ਵੀ (phir vī, however), ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ (dūje pāse, on the other hand), ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ (udāharan laī, for example), ਭਾਵ (bhāv, that is), ਇਸ ਦੇ ਉਲਟ (is de ulaṭ, in contrast), ਇਸ ਲਈ (is laī, therefore), ਹਾਲਾਂਕਿ (hālāṅki, although), ਜਦੋਂ ਕਿ (jadõ ki, while), ਕਿਉਂਕਿ (kiũki, because), ਤਾਂ (tāṁ, so). Debates use stance phrases: ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ… (In my opinion…), ਮੈਨੂੰ ਪੂਰਾ ਭਰੋਸਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (Mainū̃ pūrā bharosā hai ki…, I am fully convinced that…), ਮੇਰਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (Merā matlab hai ki…, What I mean is that…), ਇੱਕ ਪਾਸੇ… ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ… (Ikk pāse… dūje pāse…, On the one hand… on the other hand…).
Interview language: ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੱਸ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ ਕਿ…? (Kī tusī̃ dass sakde ho ki…?, Can you tell us about…?), ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਕੀ ਰਾਏ ਹੈ? (Is bāre tuhāḍī kī rāe hai?, What is your opinion on this?), ਜਦੋਂ … ਹੋਇਆ ਤਾਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਕੀਤਾ? (Jadõ … hoiā tāṁ tusī̃ kī kītā?, When … happened, what did you do?), ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ… (Sabh tõ pahilā̃…, Firstly…), ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ… (Ant vicc…, Finally…). Storytelling: open with scene-setting in the habitual past (ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ…), narrate events in the perfective (ਅਚਾਨਕ ਮੈਂ ਇੱਕ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੁਣੀ…), and close with reflection (ਤਦ ਤੋਂ ਮੈਂ ਹਮੇਸ਼ਾ…). The habitual/past contrast from Lesson 7 is the engine of storytelling.
Repair strategies: when you get stuck, use … ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ? (… nū̃ pañjābī vicc kī kahinde han?, How do you say … in Punjabi?), ਮੇਰਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ… (I mean…), ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਫਿਰ ਤੋਂ ਕਹੋ। (Kirpā karke phir tõ kaho, Please say that again.), ਮੈਨੂੰ ਠੀਕ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਆਇਆ। (Mainū̃ ṭhīk tarhā̃ samajh nahī̃ āiā, I didn't quite understand.), ਕੀ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੌਲੀ ਬੋਲ ਸਕਦੇ ਹੋ? (Kī tusī̃ haulī bol sakde ho?, Can you speak more slowly?). Fluent speakers repair constantly — asking for help is a skill, not a failure.
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ | is tõ ilāvā | besides, in addition |
| ਫਿਰ ਵੀ | phir vī | however, nevertheless |
| ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ | dūje pāse | on the other hand |
| ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ | udāharan laī | for example |
| ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ | merī rāe vicc | In my opinion |
| ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਕੀ ਰਾਏ ਹੈ? | is bāre tuhāḍī kī rāe hai? | What is your opinion on this? |
| … ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ? | … nū̃ pañjābī vicc kī kahinde han? | How do you say … in Punjabi? |
| ਮੇਰਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ… | merā matlab hai ki… | What I mean is that… |
| ਅਚਾਨਕ | acānak | suddenly |
| ਤਦ ਤੋਂ | tad tõ | since then |
= "In my opinion, school uniform is a good thing because there is no comparison. However, on the other hand, it limits freedom. Therefore I think uniform should be optional."
= "It happened one day. I was going home when suddenly I saw a lost dog. I took him to the doctor and since then he has been my best friend." Habitual past sets the scene; perfective moves the story.
Try it yourself: tell a 6-sentence story about a surprise, using ਇੱਕ ਦਿਨ ਦੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ…, ਜਾ ਰਿਹਾ ਸੀ…, ਅਚਾਨਕ…, ਤਦ ਤੋਂ…. Answers: a good story uses the habitual past for background, the perfective for the surprise event, and a closing reflection.
Real-world application — mock interview: In pairs, interview each other about a hobby: ask three questions (ਤੁਸੀਂ ਕਦੋਂ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ? ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਕਿਉਂ ਪਸੰਦ ਹੈ? ਕੀ ਸਲਾਹ ਦੇਵੋਗੇ?), answer with connectors, and end with ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ…. Record it and listen back for connector use.
Vocabulary: ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ (is tõ ilāvā, besides), ਫਿਰ ਵੀ (phir vī, however), ਦੂਜੇ ਪਾਸੇ (dūje pāse, on the other hand), ਉਦਾਹਰਨ ਲਈ (udāharan laī, for example), ਮੇਰੀ ਰਾਏ ਵਿੱਚ (merī rāe vicc, In my opinion), ਇਸ ਬਾਰੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਕੀ ਰਾਏ ਹੈ? (What is your opinion on this?), … ਨੂੰ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਕੀ ਕਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ? (How do you say … in Punjabi?), ਮੇਰਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ ਕਿ… (What I mean is that…), ਅਚਾਨਕ (acānak, suddenly), ਤਦ ਤੋਂ (tad tõ, since then).
Lesson 20: Literature & Capstone — Guru Nanak, Waris Shah, Bulleh Shah & Your Essay — ਸਾਹਿਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਪਨ ਲੇਖ
Reading — Guru Nanak (1469–1539): the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Gurus, whose hymns open the ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ (Guru Granth Sahib). His ਜਪੁਜੀ ਸਾਹਿਬ (Japji Sahib) begins: "ਸਚੁ ॥ ਸੋਚੈ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ ॥" — "Truth — it is not found by thinking, even if one thinks a hundred thousand times." Nanak's Punjabi is direct and fearless: he questions empty ritual and teaches honest work (ਕਿਰਤ ਕਰੋ), sharing (ਵੰਡ ਛਕੋ), and remembrance (ਨਾਮ ਜਪੋ).
Reading — Waris Shah (1722–1798) and Bulleh Shah (1680–1757): Waris Shah's ਹੀਰ (Heer) is the great Punjabi romance — the story of Heer and Ranjha, whose love defies family and custom. It opens: "ਅੱਵਲ ਹਮਦ ਖ਼ੁਦਾ ਦਾ ਵਿਰਦ ਕੀਜੇ" (Avval hamad khudā dā virad kīje) — "First, repeat the praise of God." Bulleh Shah, the Sufi poet, asked the deepest question in the simplest words: "ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ! ਕੀ ਜਾਣਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੌਣ" (Bullhā! kī jāṇā̃ maĩ kauṇ) — "Bulleh! What do I know who I am." Great Punjabi writing uses simple words for big feelings.
Capstone essay: write a 250-word essay in Punjabi on "ਹੋਰ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਵਾਂ ਸਿੱਖਣਾ ਕਿਉਂ ਜ਼ਰੂਰੀ ਹੈ?" (Why is it important to learn other languages?). Structure: introduction (ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ…), two body paragraphs (one with a personal example in the past tenses, one with a hypothetical in the ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ pattern), and a conclusion (ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ…). Use at least: one subjunctive-like -ੇ form, one passive, three connectors, and two idioms from Lesson 18. Exchange essays with a partner and give feedback with ਮੈਨੂੰ ਲੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ… and ਮੈਂ ਸਹਿਮਤ ਹਾਂ….
| Punjabi | Transliteration | English |
| ਕਵਿਤਾ | kavitā | poetry, poem |
| ਕਵੀ | kavī | poet |
| ਦੋਹਰਾ | dohrā | couplet |
| ਲੇਖ | lekh | essay |
| ਲੇਖਕ | lekhak | author, writer |
| ਕਿਰਤ | kirat | work (of literature), creation |
| ਕਹਾਣੀ | kahāṇī | story |
| ਇਨਾਮ | inām | award, prize |
| ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ | ant vicc | in conclusion, finally |
| ਸਿੱਖਿਆ | sikkhiā | education |
Worked example 1: Guru Nanak: "ਸੋਚੈ ਨ ਹੋਵਈ ਜੇ ਸੋਚੀ ਲਖ ਵਾਰ" = "It is not found by thinking, even if one thinks a hundred thousand times." The ਜੇ (if) clause + negative verb makes the paradox: truth is lived, not merely thought.
Worked example 2: Bulleh Shah: "ਬੁੱਲ੍ਹਾ! ਕੀ ਜਾਣਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਕੌਣ" — the poet questions his own identity in seven words. His verses use the plain spoken Punjabi of Lesson 3, not courtly Persian — which is why ordinary people still sing them.
= "If everyone learned another language, they would understand other cultures better and therefore the world would be more peaceful." Hypothetical ਜੇਕਰ…ਤਾਂ + connectors in an essay frame.
Try it yourself: (1) Translate: "If everyone learned another language, they would understand other cultures better." Answer: ਜੇਕਰ ਸਭ ਲੋਕ ਦੂਜੀ ਭਾਸ਼ਾ ਸਿੱਖਣ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਦੂਜੀਆਂ ਸੱਭਿਆਚਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬਿਹਤਰ ਸਮਝਣਗੇ। (2) Write the introduction (3 sentences) of your capstone essay using ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ and one -ੇ wish form.
Real-world application — poetry recital: Memorize one Bulleh Shah line, recite it aloud with feeling, and explain in Punjabi (4–5 sentences) what it means to you. This is your graduation performance for the course.
Vocabulary: ਕਵਿਤਾ (kavitā, poetry/poem), ਕਵੀ (kavī, poet), ਦੋਹਰਾ (dohrā, couplet), ਲੇਖ (lekh, essay), ਲੇਖਕ (lekhak, author), ਕਿਰਤ (kirat, work/creation), ਕਹਾਣੀ (kahāṇī, story), ਇਨਾਮ (inām, award/prize), ਅੰਤ ਵਿੱਚ (ant vicc, in conclusion), ਸਿੱਖਿਆ (sikkhiā, education).
