Parental Consent & Student Data
Last updated: October 14, 2026. Please read this document carefully. A parent or guardian must read and accept it for students in grades 6–11. Grade 12 students read and accept the Terms for Grade 12 Students in Section 10 below.
1. What Alpha School is
Alpha School is a free, global online school for students in grades 6–12, operated by University & Beyond. It offers self-paced courses in mathematics, science, computer science, languages, history, and hands-on labs, with quizzes, assignments, adaptive tests, and a gradebook. Students can learn from anywhere in the world, at no cost. There are no tuition fees and no purchases required to use Alpha School.
2. What data we collect — and only that
When a student creates an account, we collect only the following four pieces of information:
- Student name — the student’s full name, used to address the student and label their gradebook and progress.
- Grade level — the student’s grade (6–12), used to show age-appropriate courses and assignments.
- Student email address — used to create the account, sign the student in, verify the account, and send learning-related messages.
- Parent or guardian email address — required for students in grades 6–11, used to obtain verifiable parental consent and to send the parent or guardian account and progress notices. Grade 12 students may register with their own email and are not required to provide a parent or guardian email.
We do not collect any other personal data. We do not ask for a home address, phone number, date of birth, photograph, government ID, payment information, location data, or any other personal information. We do not collect data from any other source about the student.
3. Why we use the data (purpose)
We use the four items above only for these purposes:
- Account creation and sign-in — to create the student’s account, keep it secure, and let the student sign in on any device.
- Learning progress tracking — to record lessons visited, quiz and test scores, assignments completed, and grades, so the student (and, for younger students, their parent or guardian) can see progress and so progress syncs across devices.
- Weekly task-sheet emails — to send the student a weekly summary of assignments and learning tasks.
- Occasional outreach about University & Beyond programmes — to send occasional messages about other University & Beyond learning programmes that may be relevant. These messages are infrequent, and a parent, guardian, or Grade 12 student may ask us to stop them at any time by emailing admin@unb.college.
We do not use student data for any other purpose.
4. Children’s privacy — COPPA (United States)
Alpha School complies with the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). For a student under 13 years of age, we require verifiable parental consent before we collect, use, or keep any personal information from that student. Here is how that works:
- During registration, a parent or guardian must provide their own email address, read this document, and accept it.
- We then send a one-time verification code to the parent or guardian email address. The account is not activated until the parent or guardian enters that code, proving they control the email address and have given consent.
- We also send a one-time verification code to the student email address to confirm it belongs to the student.
- If a parent or guardian does not give consent, or does not complete verification, we do not activate the account and we do not keep the student’s personal information beyond what is needed to process the request.
- A parent or guardian may withdraw consent at any time by emailing admin@unb.college. On withdrawal, we will close the account and delete the child’s data as described in Section 6.
Because grade level is a reasonable indicator of age, we apply the same parental-consent and parent-email-verification steps to all students in grades 6–11, not only to those known to be under 13. This is deliberate: it ensures no child under 13 is registered without a parent’s verified consent.
5. U.S. state privacy laws
Alpha School respects U.S. state student-data and consumer-privacy protections, including the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the California Privacy Rights Act (CCPA/CPRA) and general state student-data privacy laws. In plain terms, this means:
- No sale of student data. We do not sell, rent, or trade student personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- No third-party advertising. We do not show third-party advertisements to students, and we do not allow advertisers to collect data from students on Alpha School.
- No profiling. We do not profile students, and we do not use student data to make automated decisions about a student. Grades are computed only from the student’s own coursework.
- Limited use. Student data is used only for the educational purposes listed in Section 3. It is not used to build marketing profiles or to target students.
- California rights. California residents may ask to know what personal information we hold about the student, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing admin@unb.college. We will not discriminate against anyone for exercising these rights.
6. Data retention
We keep student data only while the account is active — that is, while the student (or their parent or guardian) keeps the account open and uses it. If an account is closed, or if a parent, guardian, or Grade 12 student asks us to delete the data, we will delete the student’s personal information and learning records. We do not keep student data after deletion except where a short, limited backup copy is technically unavoidable, in which case it is not used and is removed when the backup cycle completes. If registration is started but never completed (for example, consent or email verification is not finished), we do not keep the submitted personal information as an active account record.
7. Parent rights
At any time, a parent or guardian may:
- Review the personal information we hold about their child;
- Correct any inaccurate information (for example, a misspelled name or a wrong grade level);
- Delete the child’s data and close the account; and
- Withdraw consent for any further collection or use of the child’s information.
To exercise any of these rights, email admin@unb.college from the parent or guardian email address on file, stating the student’s name and what you would like us to do. We will respond and act promptly. We may ask for a brief confirmation to make sure we are speaking to the right parent or guardian before we release or delete a child’s data.
8. Security
We protect student data with reasonable safeguards:
- Passwords are hashed. Passwords are stored as one-way hashes, never in readable plain text. No one at Alpha School can see a student’s password.
- Secure storage. Account data is stored securely on our servers, and access is limited to what is needed to operate the school.
- Encrypted connections. The site is served over HTTPS, so information sent between the student’s browser and our servers is encrypted in transit.
- Verification codes. One-time verification codes expire after a short time and can each be used only once.
No system is perfectly secure. If you believe an account has been accessed without permission, email admin@unb.college right away so we can help secure it.
9. Contact
For any question about this document, about a child’s data, or to exercise any right in Section 7, contact us at admin@unb.college. Please include the student’s name and grade level so we can find the account.
10. Terms for Grade 12 students
Grade 12 students register with their own email address. A parent or guardian email is not required for Grade 12. A Grade 12 student reads this document and accepts it for themselves, by reading it in full and clicking “I Accept” during registration. The same data rules apply to Grade 12 students as to all other students:
- We collect only the student’s name, grade, and student email (plus a parent or guardian email only if the student chooses to provide one).
- We use the data only for the purposes in Section 3: account creation, learning progress tracking, weekly task-sheet emails, and occasional outreach about University & Beyond programmes.
- We do not sell student data, show third-party advertising, or profile students (Section 5).
- Data is kept only while the account is active and is deleted on request (Section 6).
- The student may review, correct, or delete their data at any time by emailing admin@unb.college.
- Passwords are hashed and data is stored securely (Section 8).
A Grade 12 student who is under 18 accepts these terms for themselves as a senior student registering with their own email. A parent or guardian of a Grade 12 student may still contact us at admin@unb.college with any question or request about the student’s data.
